The guards used to glare at me trying to figure out if a had a chronically bad tooth or whether I was dipping every time I drove on campus. I learned many ways to strategically hide spit cups while at LBC - I mean LU.

I just have to say, the ravine is still very much alive and well. I'm not sure if the railroad ties are still holding the hill in place, because I spend most of my time at Campus North now. Maybe I'll walk over there tonight and check. My first semester at LU (Fall, 97) marked the arrival of TV's in the dorms and facial hair. Since then I've been around for the addition of the campus network, the construction of all the "new" facilities (Dorm 33, the "new" pit, Campus East facilities), the DeMoss expansion, the various dress code reformations, the Ericsson purchase, and now what I like to call "The Great Expansion". (If you're not aware, LU is currently growing at a phenomenal rate, and that's not Jerry speak, it really is.) And no, I'm not still a student. So, if you guys want pictures of any of the current facilities, the new construction, or anything else on Campus (besides the female students), just let me know. I'll be happy to walk around and snap a few shots for you old school'ers. (I've got an all-access pass. ) Oh. And I have a high-resolution picture of the current campus circa August 04. You can get it here. Note that Campus East, the connection to Campus North and some other things were still under construction at that time. Current construction on campus includes TRBC, LCA and I believe the new facade for the Campus North building.

Thanks for the pic, El Scorcho. It looks like the bald spot isn't so bald anymore. That pic also gives PAmedic a better perspective on all the growth arpund campus. Where did all the woods go?
BTW, nice blog.

When you look back to the pictures of the first two buildings on campus it really does put into perspective how much the campus has grown. Even going back now the trees they planted when I was there look like trees now - not twigs in the ground.

that is amazing- consider the fact that back "then" there was nothing but fields behind the 4 "new" dorms above the circle, the ravine was- a ravine- and the first thing you saw upon entering the campus was Hancock bldg! oh, and accross 460 was woods/mtn

I remember walking the bridge over to my first class through the ravine. I also remember how loud Liberty Gym got during those battles with Longwood and Mt. St. Mary's. That place was a dump but really cool at the same time!

Anyone want pictures of anything else? Student Center? Indoor track? Like I said, I'm more than happy to a snap a few pictures to satiate the curiosity of the rocking chair crowd. (Kiiiiidding!) ;D

Careful, you don't want to do anything to mess with our pacemakers. Seriously, I'd like to see the new student center.

Man - Campus has come really far from when I graduated in 1999. I went back in 2000 for graduation and couldnt believe how much it had grown in a year.
My sales territory covers Lynchburg. I am in the process of setting up some appointments in Roanoke and cant wait until I can get down there to see the campus! I bet they get that new football facility up before the season!!

Most of my visits back to campus over the past 15 years have been around trips covering college games in the region from my days covering the Longhorns in Austin. Every time I visited Lynchburg, I was stunned at not only the growth on campus but surrounding the campus as well. I think that will freak PAmedic out as much the cool new entrance.

Hey Guys, with all the new stuff going up I feel like I won't recognize the place. I am a second generation LU grad. I graduated in 2001 and my parents graduated in 1977. He was around when LBC had classes in an old hotel (that they had to clean up) and TRBC. He remembers praying for a new compus in a tent on Liberty Mountain. I have to get him on here!
BTW- Sly, sorry I might make you feel old but I was is 1st grade at LCA the year that Treasure Island washed away. I remember having to get out of the school bus and walk across the rusty old bridge because they thought is might fall apart.

Seoul -- I already know how old I am. Everytime I work in the yard or chase my kids around I realize the inevitable fact of my increasing age.
Your dad is definitely REALLY old school LU. We used to hear stories about the hotel from the old timers when I was in school.
BTW, did you compete in the youth sports leagues that they had all of us students at LU coach for Christian Srervice credits? Ron Dayne would've been a year or two in front of you. I coached against his team.

Ron Dayne was a terror on the soccer field before growing up and realizing the other football was where his skills were best utilized. Although the Giants probably would question how well they have been used in the NFL.

old hag w/ a new question: what do you guys/gals on campus do if you need an ambulance? No offense, but THIS- www.liberty.edu/StudentAffairs/index.cfm?PID=1491- is pathetic. basically, call LUPD. A COP? A school this size needs its own Basic Life Support unit, if not a Paramedic unit. In addition, does LU have any sort of fire dept or fire brigade? (I shudder to think, but am pretty sure not.)

I'm pretty sure LUPD trains a couple officers to be "EMT's", they drive around an old Jeep Cherokee with a couple tackle boxes in the back. But if you need to go to the hospital, I think they call the rescue squad. Remember, hospitals down here don't have their own ambulances, they rely on the rescue squads. And no, there's no sort of fire department. But the Lynchburg PD did build their new communications center right next to the school (across from Applebees), however much that matters.

Actually on campus there is the SubConnection, which does make pretty good subs...though they are a bit pricy and I'm not sure they're really a foot long like they claim.

They need to have an official OLD HAG week, somehwat like a CFAW, but for you old guys. We might even open our room to ya, unlike those CFAW's.....and we play PS2 for the record, leave your Atari's at home. (and yes that means we have TV's IN our room!!!)

That Old Hag for a weekend deal is not a bad idea. It is like homecoming but you get to stay in the dorm. PAmedic and Sly and the rest of you guys would be blown away since you have not been here in a few years. I can tell you I am still mesmorized when I drive on campus and I live in Lynchburg. I just finished working out at the LaHaye Center! What a facility. They should call North Campus, LaHaye Campus because between the student center and the ice hockey rink they are responsible for most of that section of campus....And PAmedic, we both know they are called Cheesesteaks and Hoagies!

PAMed - good luck going undercover if you make it to Homecoming. "Old Hags" are a dead give away! They are the ones walking around with that astonished look. You may be heard saying - "I remember when....these trees were planted, this building wasn't here - it was just an empty field, we could NEVER dress like that, we could NEVER drive like that, we could NEVER hold hands like that, etc. I'm packing up the hubby and kids and heading to L'burg to visit family and friends for Memorial weekend! Kids can't wait to visit Sonic as soon as we land!

I think the BIGGER dead giveaway will be the near-mullet, Bruce Springsteen style clothing (normally blue jeans and a white T-shirt) and 80's glam-rock boots. Not to mention I'm currently listening to the "Hairband" station on my Sirius satellite reciever. OH BOY, I really am hopeless (as SHE tells me on a daily basis)

old hag w/ a new question: what do you guys/gals on campus do if you need an ambulance? ok this is going from bad to worse: www.newsadvance.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=LNA%2FMGArticle%2FLNA_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031782204292&path=!news!opinion I had NO IDEA you guys still had Volunteer EMS down there- I know VA is behind the times, but 20 yrs? Do you have vol doctors, lawyers, CPA's or garage mechanics too? this quote is the worst: Employers are also understandably becoming more reluctant to let their employees dash out the door every time the scanner says someone needs helpuh, no, I guess not! what, you have to LEAVE the office, go pick up an ambulance- and a half hour later pick up the pt? (we are allowed 2 MINUTES to respond up here before a supervisor gets notified! and thats 24-7, 365) sorry for the rant- a pet peeve of mine!

It's the rescue squad system. Most of the towns around here have volunteer rescue squads and fire departments. They have to have fund raisers, grants, and the like to get money for equipment, etc. They are also the official transport of patients from retirement/assisted living/mental facilities to the hospital, even if it's not an emergency. But you should see some of the calls these guys get for injuries, very routine stuff that definitely does not require a rescue squad or ambulance.

How this thread got this far off track I;ll never know. But I'll chime in nonetheless.
PAmedic makes it sound like they don't have voluntary EMS in the State of Pennsylvania. That's baloney. While it is obviously not the preferred setup, volunteer EMTs fill gaps for areas that are either unincorporated or don't have the operating funds for fulltime staffing. In smaller towns it is rare to have FT paramedics.
And frankly, knowing how tight of a ship they ruin in general at LU it is not surprising at all that they don't have paramedics in place.
And as for my willingness to use a volunatry doctor, you show me one who will work for free and I am there. Healthcare is getting obscenely expensive.
