Yes and no. KSU took Prince because they couldn't get Leavitt from USF and they were left scrambling to find someone when Leavitt got the extension at USF. Temple is flat out bad - the choices were Harbaugh and Golden.
I'm going to let this go. Like I said - my anger on this hire is probably not even justified and is is driven because Rocco is a Groh guy and I have so little respect for Groh as a coach. I will quit and move on. I would love to know who the other candidates were though.

it does not matter if the assistants were second choice, they got the jobs. golden as a young guy, thinks he can turn temple around...a very daunting task indeed, and prince has been rumored for years to be a head coach. oh well as a hokie it figures you dont like the hire and you do not like any groh guys. sometimes just give credit where credit is due. i still like you though HF;D

great points - you are still my favorite Wahoo fan. Golden turning around Temple would be a HUGE accomplishment - the TU fans are thrilled to have him! You are right my "Hokieness" probably clouded my judgment a bit - but after last night's lost to FSU - I am glad we didn't hire any of those Tech rejects either!

I (like many) wanted a name but the more I learn about Rocco, the more I like him. When I first heard his name as a rumor I thought "Here we go again, nepetism within the ranks of TRBC/LU." But after hearing this guy's heart, seeing his experience, knowing that his fellow assistants are wanted by bigger programs as much as we want Rocco, I am thankful that he's here.
I'm now in complete support of this team and this coach. I firmly believe that all of the goals are not only possible but realistic within the next 10 years. I don't believe all schools in I-AA WANT to be larger. I also know that in state schools there is a conflict of interest to move them all up. The state has limited resources as well and they have to choose where to put money. Rocco was pleased with the recruiting budget and I'm sure he is being payed well to be here. I anticipate his staff will be taken care of and Dr. Falwell is ready to get behind this program to make sure money isn't the issue with acheiving this goal.
The stadium will be improved dramatically, the funds will be raised and community relations will be improved. With the wins comes people and we've all seen that LU isn't all that far away on the 15k attendence/paid attendance rule. The numbers are low but it wouldn't take too many winning seasons to get them up, especially if we focused on making LU a Lynchburg-friendly school (like what we're doing with the ice-rink).
If LU (and it's extended family) wants to go D-1, we have a small window here where I believe the administration and donors around the country will get in line and put their money where their mouths are. If it's going to happen, I personally think there is no better time than now.
Once Dr. Falwell is no longer in charge or passes away, the void left will be a jolt to the system and LU football will be taking a back seat while the University and TRBC find it's voice. Dr. Falwell and his friends have talked about this for a long time... I believe the time is now and I'm excited to have Coach Rocco aboard.

don't pin that rumor on me- I can get in enough trouble on my own.
for the record- H'BURG has steadfastly denied that one.

Hey, I thought I figured it out...H'burg said he coached at a D-III college in PA...so I searched in PA for Morgan Hout and Harrisburg (a city in PA...I'm originally from Johnstown, PA)...I eventually came up with Shippensburg university...but I looked at the coaches, and one of them was named Morgan, but not Hout! H'Burg is the rumer true?!?! (the hijack continues)

It's time for me to come clean. I may or may not be Morgan Hout - I say this as I wipe down my 1988 Virginia SID Coach of the Year Award.
Looking forward to the Rutgers game Medic - I may be over all of this by then :>)

Medic:
Slim pickenings for Elon huh? I feel a little better about things already. I just freaked out becasue Rocco has been with Al Groh for the last 6 years and played for Groh at Wake. I have zero respect for Groh as a coach and was infuriated we hired his right hand man. That said, just like I deserve a chance when I mess things up - Coach Rocco deserves a chance and my support. I won't feel good about the hire until we turn the corner. I'm starting to think this move will be a good one but ever since Morgan was fired I don't have much faith in the decision making abilities of our athetic program.

geez HF we already know you have no respect for al groh. what did he ever do to you? we he coached at wake, there was no emphasis on football, thus the poor record, and it is a tough sell anyway. they have loosened their standards a bit since grobe came in. he has change the culture of UVA football and is getting better players. he has not coached them so great as of now, but you should be happy about that ;D he coaches with integrity as well. he may be smug, and his use of the NFL is over the top at times, but i think he is a good man. i think your boy beamer is an excellent coach, but the way he lets his players act on the field, esp. in the acc championship game was pretty bad and i think you can admit. we old schoolers like to just make the play and gop back to the huddle. do i respect him less?? not at all. love ya HF ;D

Hey guys, I was sitting here in teh lab and overheard a football player talking about a meeting today where the players are gonna meet a couple of the defensive coaches Rocco is bringing in. Im sure somebody with more inside information could elaborate on this but I think he may be trying to bring some of the auxiliary staff from UVA over here

Thanks for the heads up, 710. I'm guessing he has to be close to fillingout the defensive staff already. But its tough to work the phones for staff while you are out making in-home visits to kids before the bowl dead period arrives.

Madmat says: "The message was essentially this from Coach Rocco. We are going to win, doing all that needs to be done in order to win. And all the personal development stuff, which is good, will take care of itself. The previous message was charachter development could be achieved through losing."
If that's true, I like this guy already.
Seriously though, there is no feasible reason why LU should NOT win the Big South next year. I think a .500 record may be pushing it -- only because the schedule is difficult. But if you look at the 1-10 LU team's play during conference, we were competitive.
Rocco seems to have lit the fire in our players. It seems like they have the will to go the extra mile for him, and I didn't see that happening last year.

Wow, sounds like coach Rocco actually agrees with Stevev and others on this board who believe that success rises and falls on that leadership thing. I can almost imagine Lombardi or Parcells saying the same thing. This guys sounds like he's hungry to win and seems like he knows how to get it done. That's one intangible that's hard to show in a resume'.
