We have several threads working in the football forum on the coaching search. But I thought we'd start a separate one here on the General Board regarding the replacement for Dr. Park.
Frankly, I think this one could be as crucial or moreso than the football position. It will be tough for the new head football coach to be as successful as they are capable of without an AD putting them in position to succeed.
With all that said, I'm curious what folks on the mounatin are hearing about this opening. As I mentioned before, it sure appears from everything I'm hearing that Lou Holtz has the position if he wants it. But he may never be offered the job and he may not feel he can take on the responsibility right now with his health concerns.
If Lou is not in the picture, who else could take the reins. Do we go for another high profile name like a Lou or Sam Rutigliano? Or do we try to find another extremely well-qualified man like Dr. Park who can manage the department to its fullest despite a lack of name recognition?
Frankly, I'm curious myself. What do you think?

How about thingy Sheridan as AD? He was the head coach at Furman and then NCSU. I know he's consulting with ETSU boosters about ways to revive the football program down there. Speaking of ETSU - if they do start football again in 2008 - how about getting them in the BSC?

Interesting idea regarding Sheridan.
As far as ETSU is concerned, I'm guessing the SoCon would be taking them back if they do indeed restart the program. Otherwise, I say bring them on.

I don't think the SoCon will have the ETSU Bucs back. They dropped the Bucs like a hot potato when ETSU decided to drop football. The decision to drop football was VERY shortsighted. Many ETSU alums were hot about losing affiliation with the SoCon - but the conference made it clear - no football - no membership. I think there may be still bad blood there.
They would be a great fit for the BSC if football returns to Johnson City.

But if they were to bring back football, the SoCon would likely let them have the spot they vacated. I'd love to have the Bucs in the Big South. But I think the OVC would also be interested in them as well.

I'm not so sure. I think the ETSU people and SoCon people bruned the bridge with one another. ETSU could compete in the BSC and they would be right in the football of the conference.

ETSU? Did someone say ETSU? That gives me a great segue (pronounced segway) into my famous Dunk that I won't let die...ETSU was top 10 in the nation, coming into the Multi Purpose center. An historic event for Liberty because it was the first game ever televised on ESPN! The Flames were only down by 4 thanks to a 45 second shot clock and 4000 fans that kept us going. The dunk came about 7 minutes into the game and it got the crowd riled up into a frenzy! Anyway, that is also the night the lights got knocked out and ESPN never came back to our game!......Now back to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress....

I set you up pretty nicely on that one didn't I SCAR? I was recruited by the Bucs to play football and took a visit to the campus. No offense to ETSU but after my visit I wasn't very pumped up about heading west given the fact I would be walking on and I really didn't like the campus.
The Minidome was pretty cool though.

Moving back toward the original focus of this thread ...
While the trip down memory lane was nice for Scar, I think we need to return this thread to discussion of the AD position.

if im not mistaken i think easy-t is going to the atlantic sun next year, so if they do bring back football, they would be a logical fit to the BSC. as fas as the AD, im sure jerry is going for a big name with shock value...someone who could be a big fundraiser. a name that sticks out to me is todd turner. used to be at vandy till they did away with the concept of the athletic dept. he used to also work at nc state, uconn and UVA. It is a huge stretch, but he's an east coast guy, graduated from UNC.

My apologies to Sly because I just have to ask Scar a question as I missed his dunk on ESPN. Didn't ETSU they have the shortest guard in the nation that year? Or was that another year? Anyway, I can't remember what I ate for breakfast yesterday but I do remember Jerry saying back in the day that he knew LU would someday play Notre Dame because then coach Lou Holtz was a good Christian and would put LU on their schedule. Don't know if that means anything now or not.
With the students probably on their way home, here's my outsider view of what's going on. --Jerry's 2 week timeframe is impossible to keep unless he already knows who the next AD/coach will be. Let'd hope the next coach can come immediately instead of having to recruit ala Charlie Weis did last year while on his off day with the Patriots. Although Weis would have been worth the wait. --The new AD told Jerry how many assts AD's he would bring along thus the change at that position. --Sundheim was kept due to recruiting reasons - we don't want this to be a lost season on the recruiting trail. He could later be moved into one of the AD spot or kept on the staff. The new staff will need to know who our high school contacts are. Pete is probably calling the recruits now saying if you thought Karcher was good, just wait til you see... --the coaches were left go last week so they could say their goodbyes and empty out their offices over the break so the new AD and coaches... --can be announced in early December so they don't miss a beat on the recruiting trail.
The next couple weeks will be interesting.

Baldspot, the guard in question was a guy by the name of Keith "Mr." Jennings. He was a pretty good player and a great guy. He stood 5 feet 7 inches and he was from Culpeper VA. He and I kept in touch for a few years after that when he was in the NBA. He played for Golden St with Mullen, Sprewell, Chris Webber etc.....As far as the AD and coach, I would bet a lot of money that Falwell has both jobs filled already. He said on gmtm's show that he couldn't ethically say anything until the division 1A season is officially over as far as the coach. He could probably name the AD right now but wants to do them both at the same time. Medic is right, we all are anxious and waiting on the edge of our seats for this one! Hopefully the people named will be able to live up to the hype and expectation level that has been raised considerably over the past few days.

Bigsmooth I just saw this thread again but Calvin Talford at ETSU was a true skywalker. He actually kicked me in the head on a dunk when he caught an alley oop over me down at their place! And I jumped too! I got his boys back though the next time we played on the now imfamous "Dunk on ESPN that I won't let die."

My claim to fame is Anthony Richardson (just grad. from FSU), windmilled one over me in a summer-league game at High Point Univ. about 7 years ago. Disgusting. I still catch it from my pops.

Man I can go through a laundry list of brothas that punched on me. If you play ball in Philly it is bound to happen. But I got a few back too so it is all good. The worst one for me recently (8 years ago) was when I was still in decent shape and I played pickup with our team at LU when I was coaching. The UVA Players came down for the summer. It was Curtis Staples, Jamaal Robinson, Colin Dusharme, Norman Nolan and Courtney Alexander (not to be confused with Corey Alexander). Courtney jumped from the free throw line extended so I thought he was going to lay it up and I jumped to pin it against the backboard...Mistake! He kept going up and he dunked it HARD on my head! We had to stop the game to laugh at me and look at Courtney like he was some sort of freak for jumping that far away. Larry Jackson still talks about that one!

Don't mean to 'dunk' on the great stories..... but this board has officially been Hijacked.
AD anyone? ;D
I'm looking for a name to do the heavy lifting of 'building' the program. The coach has a lot of weight to get a good product on the field but someone has to push for facilities, funds and fannies in the seats. The AD also needs to put the plan in place from a University perspective to get us into 1A.
Sam or Lou would make that happen as well as most any other big name. I'm still hoping for a 'name' to draw in the donors.

Sam is not going to be the AD bank on that. He was here for one reason and that was to consult and help with the coach selection.

I would love to see Coach Sam but I am biased. If it is someone with the same name recognition I wouldn't mind that either. If Danny Rocco is the football coach for sure, Liberty in my opinion is moving the football program in the right direction. He sounds like a guy that can get it done. I think he may have even dunked on me :-) (Kidding).

Winning will take care of putting fannies in the seats. I remember just several years back, the MBB team would fill the Vines for almost every game. The only difference between then and now is the W's.

hiring sam as AD would be a mistake. he did not do much in the fundraising dept. for football while he was there, so how is going to handle an entire atheltic dept? just my 2 cents

I starting to feel that we are going in a different direction with regard to the AD selection- poss a very good candidate that may not be a "big name" but knows how to rebuild a program and shares the vision of the Chancellor.
Maybe someone behind the scenes at a big time program that hasn't had a lot of "face time" but is quite effective. We'll have to wait and see.

How do you feel about hiring a coach with an AD to bless it? Will Dr. Falwell just ask that "every get along"? You are definitely going to have to have strong people to build the football program on the field and "in the field". Did anyone ever think that if you put two beta fish in a bowl that they might fight with each other?

Let's not assume that a new AD hasn't had some influence int he selection of the coach. I don't know one way or the other. But I don't feel we can make judgements without all of the facts.
