This is very interesting, from the Liberty homepage:
Hmmm... Saying that he resigned, as opposed to released. I think that's a nice gesture by LU, it looks better to let the record state that someone left on their own terms as opposed to being terminated.

This quote is from SI.com: "The Rev. Jerry Falwell cleaned house at Liberty University's athletic department, firing the football coach and two top administrators while another resigned."

Another disappointing showing by the N&A's web site. I wrote a story for today's paper telling Ken Karcher's side of what happened, and not surprisingly, it doesn't end up online.
The university release is wrong. I asked Ken yesterday if he resigned, and he said point blank: "No, I was fired. I was terminated without cause. I did not resign."
The Falwells said the same thing Thursday. No idea why the university's official release was wrong.
Karcher was at peace when I talked to him. He knew this was coming, and he wanted the move to be made before today's game so he could share it with his players himself and be able to meet with them before they all break for the end of the season.
I asked him if he was bitter, and he said he had nothing to be bitter about. He had six "great years" where he got to meet and deal with a lot of quality human beings. He acknowledged that a 21-45 record wasn't enough to get it done. It's a business.
When I get back to the office tomorrow, I'll try to fish the story out of the system and post it here.

Not really Another Guest. We have all been very aware and sensitive of the ancillary fallout. We even discussed this prior to any of the changes taking place. I pray for all the coaches and their families that they land on their feet.

Actually, I was talking about the other athletic dept. personnel. Fired without given so much as a reason, and never even saw it coming. Karcher and Park, I can understand, and maybe even Graham; but certainly not the others. They were not even involved with football. I suspect that is why some of the other non-registered posters think that there is other evil lurking in the department.

due to the fact that employment law generally frowns upon making job actions public- even legitimate reasons for termination must be kept confidential.
as a supervisor- I have had to make unpopoular HR decisions and then "keep mum" while speculation raged- unable to defend the actions taken.
there are people that appear unable to comprehend the concept that, yes- even Christians lose their jobs, most of the time w/ GOOD REASON. maybe several years in the working world will open their eyes.

PAMedic: Point well-taken. Thanks for letting me have a voice without giving me grief for not registering. Yes, bad things happen to good people all the time; sometimes with cause, and sometimes without. It is how we respond as Christians that will help us grow and change.

I am still a little ticked about Tom Park's resignation. It seems like he had a great vision for the athletic department which was talked about in the New Advance and also at halftime of the 1st football game. He was doing some great things for the athletic department in the personel that he brought in and his presenting his long term vision that really got me excited about the future of LU athletics but unfortunately his accomplishments would have taken years to notice as far as wins/losses and the overall national exposure that was spoken of in that vision. Nothing dramatic was done but he did some good little things that are important to the overall success but we will never see the results. Very frustrating! His credentials seemed like a perfect fit and he had a great business and management background necessary for getting the funding and overall infrastructer to make this plan a reality. Now we trudge along with our mediocre sports teams competing in one of the worst sports conferences in the country and only hoping for limited national exposure. It is a total shame!
The good news is that Jerry seems to be looking for someone to carry on that vision to another level as I read the New Advance article. Hopefully this person will carry on what Tom Park attemped to get done and then some, bring in the necessary funding and infrastructure, and lay the foundation for the national exposure that was talked about in Jerry's vision. Hopefully in the next 2 weeks I or anyone else on this board will not be disappointed.

Karcher says:
And yet...
So he knew that he was going to be fired unexpectedly for no reason. Wait, what?
Well, I can think of a couple of reasons to justify the firing, Mr. Karcher. I'd hardly say it was "without cause." Maybe having a 21-46 record (I think 15-46 against D-I competition), including going winless in the conference, had a hand in that deal.

Usually resign=fired. It's just a way so that the employee doesn't have to screw up their resume really. As for Karcher off the field, I have to say that although I know he really encouraged the guys to grow in Christ-I have to agree with Ed in regard to the fact that he always rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like the way that he would call his players out in the media, and it's no secret that I don't respect aspects of a coach that won't own up to his team's losses. Honestly, I just have always gotten a bad feeling about him in the situations where I have come into contact with him. I won't elaborate any further, and I'm not trying to kick a guy while he's down-but I will say that even though I am sympathetic to his situation and hope he is able to find another job-I am not sorry that Karcher is going. I don't think he was the man for the job in any way. I don't say these things maliciously-just honestly. I'd say that maybe Park was also given the "out" of resigning-and that could be wrong-but it's my guess. It will probably be just as well for an entire new "regime" to all come into play at the same time. Maybe ol' Lou is thinking about taking over in that capacity Okay, I'm tired-if any of my comments tick you off-disregard them.
