for the record- I don't know how to get on those IM things.

If you want to use Yahoo! Messenger, you can download it here. A word of caution with it, though. Pay attention to the questions it asks you during installation or you'll end up with a Yahoo! toolbar and some other stuff you probably don't really want. Additionally, here are locations for the other clients: AOL/AIM MessengerGoogle TalkMSN MessengerAOL and Yahoo are the ones you have to watch during installation. Lots of "extras". MSN is annoying and ugly. Google Talk is secure, smooth and pretty, but hardly anyone uses it. They all work.

Everyone uses AIM. It's not the best but it's the most convenient and the most people use it.

Use AOL, even though I don't work there anymore. I use my old screen name from when I had dial up years ago and now I have my work SN too. I hesitate to do this because it can be overwhelming getting on there and having 9 conversations. In fact, if you want my SN please IM me on this board and I will give it to you.

can't I do it online, or on their site or I make it a habit of NOT downloading programs like that here at work. Register for an AIM screename and then use AIM Express on the aim.com site. It's not the best, but it does work.

No, it's using AIM through the website. You don't have to download anything.

AIM is actually an AOL product. AOL Instant Messaging is what AIM stands for. But you can go to a separate site and not the AOL.com website

Yahoo & Google are using their instant messengers are platforms for a ton of new applications coming out soon.
Personally, I never use them anymore. I have enought rouble keeping up with boards without having to answer IM/PMs all the time. But I realize how addictive it can be.
Welcome to the 21st Century, PAmedic.
