Sorry, posted this off-topic.......
Opinion Poll:
How do you feel about Liberty's attempt to brand the athletic program with a new logo? Do you like the logo?

I don't like the logo at all. It doesn't show up well because its mostly all outline. I was just down in Virginia a few weeks ago and saw VA license plates with a Liberty LU logo that I had not seen before. I liked it. It is very simple, traditional and classy. I would like to see Liberty make use of that logo for their athletic teams much the way Notre Dame, Michigan, Nebraska and Oklahoma use these types of logos. Here is the link. I like it without the eagle head. www.dmv.state.va.us/exec/vehicle/splates/info.asp?idnm=LBU

At least they are making an effort.
As for the logo itself, it look like every other logo out there across the country for schools of little note.
Consider me among those who wish the logo had more to do with fire and less with eagles. But I've seen worse .. much worse.

For one, I like it. I agree about the outline, but I think that it incorporates the fire with the Eagle. I must say that I wish they incorporated more with the fire. The eagle is so usual. Everyone has a freakin' Eagle. Now, it makes it tough to have a mascot if you are the flames, but you could be creative. I went to every single basketball and football game at Liberty when I was a student there, and the other team was always like, "You have an Eagle mascot, but you are the Flames?" Now, I also know that Flames = Flamers which is upseting, but hey, what are you gonna do. Anyway, I wish they could really take off on the fire aspect and be extremely creative. I think the lower rungs of D-I isnt the place for classy - its the place for pizzaz or a gimmick. Look at Boise State and the "Smurf Turf". They used to be D-II, but now they are in the spotlight (at least this year) and the smurf turf is a craze! Maybe liberty could do a flame colored turf

Uh no, I don't think a flame-colored turf is the way to go. The smurf turf at Boise was cute for the Humanitarian Bowls back in the day. But now that BSU is good enough to be on TV regionally on a regular basis, it hurts my eyes.
Back in the Late '80s, the administration at LU tried to officially change the mascot from the Flames to the Eagles because of the difficluty in marketing the former. They told us they would bring a live eagle to games, yada, yada, yada. But neither the students or alumni were buying it. At the time, we were the only Flames in all of collegiate sports (the Atlanta/Calgary Flames of the NHL were in existence) until Illinois-Chicago joined the fray.
Undoubtedly, if some effort were put into the process, a coll Flames mascot and logo could follow. It just seems someone (I assume Dr. J) continues to want to brand the eagle. Oh well.
There is precedent for having a different mascot than nickname. Just take a look to Alabama where both major institutions give example. The Crimson Tide use an elephant for their mascot while the Auburn Tigers scream "War Eagle".
As for the Flamers retorts, big deal. If that's the best opposition can come up with to disparage us then that is a bigger statement in their intellect than our confidence in our manhood. Its weak trash talk any 6-year-old could muster.

Here's an interesting perspective uicflames.collegesports.com/That's University of Illinois-Chicago's athletic homepage. the 2nd team in D1A sports to be named the flames. I like our logo better. Their Mascot: Their logo: Another example is the calgary flames. Their mascot is harry the hound: On a side note look at Eastern Washington's mascot look familiar?

I don't see what was wrong with the old logo. I can not stand the new logo. A new logo does not mean you are going to have a better sorts program. Look at VMI's logo, simple but you know what it is when you see it. It would be OK if we were a NFL Europe team. Also like already commented it doesn't stand out very well.

That was our old, official logo - the weird stencil. (The LU with the Flames coming out of the back wasn't official). I think we can agree that the weird stencil isn't as good looking as cool stencil (current logo), and certainly isn't as contemporary.

I happen to like the new logo. There are many teams in the country that have a different mascot than their nickname, or have 2 names. Orlando Magic have Stuff the Magic Dragon (ok magic is in his name). VMI call themselves the runnin roos on the basketball court but they are the Keydets. UVA are the Wahoos and the Cavaliers. Georgia Tech is the Ramblin Reck and also the Yellow Jackets. However I would like to see the Flames aspect played up. I offered the idea of getting rid of the Eagle altogether and come up with a cool looking mascot of no particular species and call him Sparky (get it?) That way the mascot conjures up thoughts of fire and flames. Just my 2 cents.

Like the idea Scar, why don't you put in for AD and make it happen! We all agree that a former athelete w/ exposure and fund raising abilities is a good fit!

PAmedic,
thanks for the vote of confidence but I would not want to be the athletic director but I will say that I have given Liberty a ton of ideas about how to raise money, advance the athletic department's exposure and to generate community interest. The Vines Center and Williams stadium should be full in a community like Lynchburg. I know it is not easy by any means but with no pro sports, and it is not a major area for super star high school athletes like in Texas or California or Florida, it could and should happen. Lynchburgers drive down to Blacksburg or up to Charlottesville when they have a Division 1 program in their own back yard. I won't go on a rant but I do hope that Liberty gets someone with a vision for the future....I really liked the Sparky idea though. Maybe the next AD will make that his first point of business ;D.

PAmedic Thanks for the welcome. I would love say that I am that clever but I am not. I just notice the number of members you were referring to. Actually I use 44 in my email addresses and such just because my old basketball number. I am kind of freaked out now. Maybe it is sometype of sign? ?
