Ok-I looked but I didn't see this poll anywhere so I decided to start one. I see our biggest rival overall right now being VMI just b/c they're VMI but in basketball I'd say its High Point b/c of the "kind words" that get exchanged whenever we meet.

you know, if you were to take this 3 or 4 years ago i'd go with Radford....they had those guys with the red wigs and they would say some of the worse stuff to our players...and i'll never forget the time they made poster's on the computer of Jerry's face on a Tellatubbie's(spelling?) body...i even gave him one b/c it was made so well....but now i guess VMI even though this year their students lost interest

The fact we have to have this discussion shows that we really don't have a real rival.
Radford & VMI make geographical sense. But Radford doesn't have football. So they are just a hoops novelty essentially. I'd like to say VMI because I love seeing us pound those spoiled brats.

yeah, since we normally get hammered in the OOC games, all BSC games are equally important for us to have a shot at the tourney- making ALL the decent teams equal rivals.

I think anybody that doesn't vote radford isn't paying attention. They are the AntiLiberty. They stand for everything we're against. It's the definition of a lame party school. Not only that, they hate us and we're supposed to hate them back. Apparently you guys didn't get the memo. If any of you has ever been to a basketball game at Radford knows what I'm talking about.

I can't believe the state that our fanbase is in. The answer is, always has been and always will be, Radford. Nobody cares about VMI, they're horrible and have only been in the Big South for a few years. Ask any fan from any school in the Big South and they will tell you that one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, rivalry is Liberty/Radford. This is so obvious I can't believe it's even being put to a vote. We hate Radford, and they hate us. High Point and Winthrop come next, VMI's not even in the discussion.

LU/RU is a big rivalry, just from attending conference tournaments (back when it was neutral sites) LU and RU people go at it even if they are not playing.
WU/Coastal would be the next biggest in the league, certainly not HP.
Most WU people can't stand Coastal. We look at them as the low class, if you can't get into anywhere else in the state, school. Much like you look at RU. It's an intense rivalry in baseball, soccer, and volleyball, where both programs are usually at the top, plus they give the b-ball team fits sometimes even though they are horrible. Trust me, I'd say 8 out of 10 WU students and alumni would say Coastal.

Back in our day, Radford wasn't even a consideration. JMU was who we considered our football rival (although they didn't view us that way). And back in the Mason-Dixon days, we were building a little rivalry with Towson in all sports before we went our separate ways.
I understand the basketball rivalry with Radford, but do we really have a football rivalry anymore? The Big South obviously doesn't lend itself to one.
And Realist, its time to bite the bullet and register with the site. You post here more than most LU folks. Come on and take the plunge. I promise you won't be added to any spam lists unless you want to.

Being a former player without a doubt I have to say Radford, and Winthrop a distant second. I still can't stand Radford to this day. Sly, I heard Kingwood won the 5A State championship wow.

please, dear God, don't start w/ the Texas crap again. Unless you wanna talk about that hellacious fire they had at the refinery in Texas City (near Houston SLY?) I've been on a few "jobs" in my day but that one looked unbelievably bad. 14 dead? Yeesh

You know PAmedic, Sly and I have a special bond both being from Tx, and we have to show each other a little love from time to time. I heard about the fire in Tx City very unfortunate.

PAMedic, you and I talk about Pennsylvania almost as much as the Texas boys talk about the "country of TEXAS" (if they could ceceed from the union they would trust me). Radford is the most hated school by far for Liberty fans. It is weird still to me that their women's hoops coach is former Lady Flames standout, Jeri Wiley Porter. She recruited the Wilkerson Twins by the way along with Rick Reeves.

The way Coastal pounded us this past season, we're building some tension between our programs in football. But otherwise I agree with Harrisburg's summary.
The fire in Texas City is just about five miles from my parents (I live on the other side of Houston about 45 miles away). It was really bad even by refinery explosion terms. Everyone was running around with their heads cut off all afternoon & evening here in the newsroom. Its good to work in sports.
Yeah, Kingwood beat Carter in the semis and DeSoto in the finals in rather impressive fashion. Not bad a for a squad led by a junior & sophomore. They'll be national top ten to start next season.

Actually, nobody cares about our football games against VMI. Honestly, VMI is not considered a rival in any sport with us. For football, we gear up for Gardner-Webb more than anyone we play on a regular basis.

I would agree with that - but from a geographic and interest standpoint a healthy rivalry with VMI is good for us long term. VMI has a strong central VA alumni base. Easy for both schools to travel fans as well. Two strong areas that should be utilized to generate interest.

You're totally right. We need to generate interest in LU sports in the local area desperately, and even if that means them rooting against us and for VMI, at least people will care. But VMI is going to have to be decent at a sport before that can happen. They are the closest to us and should be a good rival, but that takes a while to build.

Yes...but at the Basketball games this year, I heard more crowd chants dissing VMI than Radford. I remember "West Point Rejects" being said louder than "STDU" (as thats what Radford is known for).

Talk to any current LU athlete. COASTAL. Not only are their athletes good, but pricks too. Inaugural football champs, baseball is great, dominate soccer, only teams to challenge men's and women's track teams, oh, and their fans are a bunch of punks.

just sitting here in my rocking chair and remembering way back when in the day when we were 1 AA Independants and had no affiliation at all, let alone rivals. We played schools like Elon and many regional state U's that have since moved on to bigger and better. Amazing that students now are watching rivalries develop, etc- when we rarely played the same teams 2 or 3 yrs in a row(other than JMU, my favorite rivalry as I've stated before). It may not seem it to current LU kids, but we've come a LONG way BABY!

The two biggest basketball games for me each year were Longwood and Mt.St.Mary's. Those games were classic.
