Considering the atmosphere at LU, I think it is in the best interest of the site to allow guests to continue to post. It opens threads up to sabotage from people with an axe to grind. But that has been nothing more than a minor nuisance to this point.
But it would be nice if some of the regular posters who haven't registered would go ahead and make the plunge. Its really painless and you won't be barraged with spam from some mailing list.

Why are these people scared to let people know who they are? If you have something to say, be honest and stand behind it.

I can identify w/ those on campus that may be a wee bit apprehensive- ya just never know! I'm sure their comfort level will increase w/ time.
And compared to posts on some other board to which I belong- ours are UNBELIEVABLY mild, courteous and - I dare say- professional.
*Plus- the post that aren't: Mark can remove*

For now we're probably OK like we are and I hope the membership will grow. The drawback is once the board gets popular you'll have people causing discontent like on techsideline.com - then it might be best to require a membership to post.

As far as I am concerned, these idiots can start ridiculous posts. If we just ignor them, they filter their way to the bottom. Mark can remove them if they are offensive, but I have yet to see any offensive posts.

Looking back on this weekend and board activity - I think it's time to make everyone register to post. As the site activity increases and our web search numbers grown we'll get more traffic and that's good. People like Tigress and TigerDave can post and in Dave's case he signed up.
But we are eventually going to have a problem with the drive by flamers with an axe to grind. Posters who make off-handed remarks and don't have the guts to put their contact information out there for the minimum amount of accoutability. This weekend was fun in that there was a lot of traffic on the board and activity posting. As Tigress put it - fr the most part - everyone made their points without flaming people. Even in a community forum like this there are certain rules of decency to follow. The fact is for the most part all of us here are relative strangers and we should all respect each other's opinions and not resort to personal character attacks. When you have those who can fly in and fly out with no opportunity for recrouse - the bravado gets big and they think they can say whatever they want because at the end of the day - they can't be confronted for their words. That said...
I'm in agreement with prototype - if you have the urge to post an opinion - have the guts to stand behind it with your e-mail and contact information.
I think this will cut down on the strife seekers and when we are dominating the BSC in football this year (TIC) the flakes will be out in full force.
Thanks.

That's the case for most other programs out there. But would you really want to discourage anybody from posting here yet? We need to encourage people to post here all we can get. I think it's worth a few jerks with some flyby posts. We can ignore it. We're not at the point where we want to be exclusive yet.

Yes and no. As the number of posts pick up our keyword searches will drive traffic. I think what you aw this weekend was the tip of the iceberg. I think it's great to keep the forum informal but increased traffic will increase risk all the way around. You see it alot on message board and guest books, etc.
What happens when posters unregistered start posting links to stuff they shouldn't? Something to think about! At least if you force them to take time to leave an e-mail addy - even if the addy is bogus - they might think twice before posting something they shouldn't.

HFF - I think you make sense in your reasoning. That being said, your posts are what got some of the opposing fans in an uproar. Just because you had a bad experience with other teams fans doesnt mean everyone who visits this site should register. I dont condone what they said, and I believe they took you out of context (see my posts over in WBB), but I dont believe from the past flury of the weekend that we need to start registering.
As far as linking to things, I am sure that Mark keeps and eye out and will pull the off-color or inappropriate posts stated in the disclaimer on the home page.

True but - if my posts caused the uproar from some of our LSU friends - my contact information is on file. So if I need to be contacted by the board host or if anyone wanted to question my motives they could. Without some form of accountability people can fly in and out and post who knows what. check out techsideline.com sometime. They got so much traffic that they went to a members area. But anyone who posts has to register that way if people are WAY out of line they can be "blacklisted". I don't think we'll ever get that amount of traffic but we do need to think about ways to keep it clean over here.
This is a great forum for FLAMES fans primarily. Guest are welcome always but as guests. I don't post on other team's boards for that reason. It's their board. I enjoy reading their comments but I would never dream of making personal attacks on folks. Increased traffic will bring some yahoos and we need to be ready for that.
I have felt this way from Day 1 actually - this weekend wasn;t the driver behind my stance.

your points are interesting- however I will respectfully disagree. Its been proven on here already that when we ignore a post the thread drops off. Let that other garbage go, man. Arguing perpetuates the hostility- thats why I attempted to share our faith and then left the forum.
Love the growth of the board so far and would hate to see anything curtail it at this point!

Great points. In the future as you said it's best to ignore it. I guess being new a message boards in a forum like this I didn't recognize that some just get a kick out of spreading discontent.
What does Dr. Falwell say "don't get into a spitting contest with a skunk" - good words to live by for meesage board conduct.
Noted and taken to heart my friend.

After getting input from you guys and giving it some thought, I have decided, for the time being, to not require membership for posting. While I agree that increased traffic will bring increased "drive-by" flaming, I think that the amount of guest traffic is going to taper off until football season starts again. It isn't often that Liberty is going to be matched up against a school with a fan base the size of LSU's in a high profile game. Lord willing, the future will have that type of game happen far more often, but for the time being, I would like to avoid doing anything that will stifle the growth of the board.
On a related note, due to the number of posters and posts continuing to grow, I often cannot read every post on the board. If something is posted that is inappropriate, please don't assume that I will see it. Send me a message to let me know. Thanks.

I do not see the HUGE deal in becoming a member to post. This board right now is basically a discusion page between about 4-5 people on a daily basis, with others giving input every now and then. Maybe if this page had 100 posters a day, that might be an idea. Who cares if you register? I post under my same name everytime because i see no real point in joining. Unless we start getting prizes or gifts (JK) I just think its kinda dumb that anyone that makes one post gets repsonded with...great post...join join join!!!... Once i see good reasons, I may join, but until now, it really has nothing to do with being a student, but just a spectator on the board with a few opinions here and there.

Who made TigerDave Chairman of the Hospitality Committee?
If he's going to be recruiting folks to sign up on the board we should make him change his name to something like "Dave the Flamer" formerly known as TigerDave (TIC)!
Dave to be fair - I'll let you pic you own name how about it?
