I had to add this thread. When I was at LU, I had my sports management practicum in the LU ticket office. Jerry Falwell "ran" the ticket office. I consider Jerry a friend and we had some good times when he came north to see Jose Guillen when I interned with the Pirates. What really used to TEXT upset me is when he would print a stack of tickets, and me and Mickey Guridi (LU Marketing - another great guy I might add) would go to local business and drop them off. I used to work at the Hilton (now Radisson I believe) and we would leave a stack at the front desk.
Now, is that any way to build fan interest in a program. I couldnt believe we would even have a season ticket program. Anyone that would buy season tickets had to do it out of charity - not desire to see a football game they can get tickets from for free from a local business. For any of you recent alum - please tell me they have stopped doing that!

Sorry - I was referring to football and the TEXT was "really, really" with bold italics and underline......

That practice has gone on for many years dating back to my time on campus. Primarily the ducats went to businesses of people int he church and businesses who sponsored things on campus. The purpose of the practice back then was to try and get folks up on campus to the games so it would build interest. Instead it simply degraded what little value the tickets actually possessed.
I have other issues with the Athletic Department as well. But I'll share those as we go along. I don't want to dump all my hair-brained ideas on you guys all at once.

I know that in basketball they've cracked down on the practice. My junior year (Hankinson's last) I'd arrive to a game late and be able to sit in the cushioned red seats 10 feet away from Falwell. Nowadays, event staff patrolls the area and makes sure that people without season tickets are scurried off to the uncomfortable plastic blue chairs.
Football? By my last two years, I procured a press pass and usually watched the games from upstairs (depending on who catered... Hand-made sandwiches, no way. Taco Bell - I'm there). By I know that my freshman year they had stacks of tickets available for the taking in the lobby of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

I think they've stopped giving away as many. My parents come down a lot, and they used to be able to get tickets for free, but they don't seem to be at the hotels anymore. They are letting everyone in free to the Birgingham Southern (excuse the spelling) game. They are taking donations for the Tsunami (excuse the spelling...what's up with these words). And there's a free concert by True Vibe or someone like that. I feel bad for season ticket holders. I actually bought season tickets to football before...but now I just buy them at the door because you never know when you can get in for free.

Do students still get in free to all athletic events on campus?

Yeah they still get in for free. I don't think you could get a student to pay nor would you want to.

Yeah they still get in for free. I don't think you could get a student to pay nor would you want to. The students pay alright! The general fee goes toward all that stuff. It was something like $500 when I was there (I graduated in 2000). Who knows what it is now!

Yeah, but you can just add that to your GSL so does it really count? Most every school in the country (except our BJU friends who don't believe in intercollegiate athletics) charges a basic fee to pay for entrance to all sporting events. The powerhouse schools sometimes charge a premium fee for football & mens hoops. But even the University of Texas doesn't charge extra for either of those sports ... they just have a draw for tickets where it is first come, first serve at a preset time. It makes for some long lines & camping out for the big games like OU and A&M.

At Purdue, students pay $75/year for football season tickets (if they so choose), and a similar amount for basketball season tickets if they choose. Some turn around and sell individual game tickets to others for a huge profit.
Your seat is assigned for the year, so if you have a falling out with your friends, you are screwed.

I have previously posted that I think students should have to pay for season tickets. I think it is bogus to have the general fee for those who dont attend, but I understand why the administration does it. I think you have to put more value on the tickets.....

Wow, Los Juevos' name certainly beats the best intramural team I've heard: "With Ourselves."
"Who are you guys playing tonight?" "Oh, we're playing 'With Ourselves' in game 1 of the tourney."

Sorry, this is off topic, but- BelcherBoy, I know you guys were the kings of IM football, but do you remember Los Juevos? I really don't remember, I played with the Belcherboys from 1994-2000. My roomates and I actually started the team. His name was Eric Belcher. My name is Andrew Cook (everyone called me Drew). The new team this year actually was ranked 12th in Flagmag.com but tanked in the nationals in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago.
