Keys Returns To Liberty As Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing
August 25, 2005 · Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University Director of Athletics Thom Park, Ph.D., has announced the employment of Liberty University graduate and former West Virginia University administrator Kevin Keys as the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing.
“Kevin Keys brings the sort of big time thinking and experience which Liberty Athletics really needs now,” stated Park. “He will be a great contributor to telling the world what we are all about. I am thrilled to have a godly Liberty man like Kevin joining our administrative team.”
Keys, who brings a wealth of athletic experience and expertise in the area of external relations, will oversee the Flames’ sports marketing and promotional programs. He comes to Liberty after working for five years at Morgantown Printing and Binding in Morgantown, W.Va. He joined the company as the vice president for marketing in 2000 and was promoted to vice president for college/corporate relations in 2003.
“The opportunity for my family and I to return to my alma mater and become a part of fulfilling Dr. Falwell’s vision for Liberty athletics was something I did not want to pass up,” said Keys. “We are excited to come
back and become a part of the Flames family.”
Keys is no stranger to Liberty or to the athletic department as the 27-year veteran of intercollegiate athletics started his career in 1973 as a statistician for the men’s basketball program. He was promoted to assistant sports information director in 1975, also handling coverage for the football and baseball programs. After graduation in 1977, he was named the school’s first-ever sports information director and remained in the position until 1985, which allowed him to see the department grow from the NCCAA level to NCAA Division I status.
During his tenure, Keys produced 44 publications that received CoSIDA honors at the regional and national levels, including 11 “Best in the Nation” awards. Keys also was instrumental in establishing the Flames Sports Network, which broadcast all football and men’s basketball games over six stations. He established and produced the athletic department’s first-ever corporate marketing program.
Keys quickly became active on the regional and national scene as he served as the president of the NAIA-SIDA from 1982-84 and was honored with the 1984 Ike Pearson Award, signifying the top SID in the NAIA ranks. In 1983, Keys played a significant role in the creation of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association, the first organization of its kind in the nation. He also served as the information director for the Mason-Dixon Athletic Conference for three years.
Upon leaving Liberty in 1985, Keys moved to Morgantown, W.Va., and joined the West Virginia University Athletic Department as the sports publications director, a position he held for 15 years. While under his supervision, 72 publications were recognized by CoSIDA for excellence at the regional and national levels, including six which received “Best in the Nation” distinction.
In his position, Keys administered the production of all printed materials for the athletic department, totaling over 150 publications annually. He also served as an active member of the athletic department’s marketing committees for general and ticket marketing for football and basketball. He supervised all in-game statistical services for football and basketball and helped develop and maintain WVU’s athletic archives. During his tenure, he co-authored a book, along with SID Shelly Poe, chronicling the history of the Mountaineer football program.
The Beltsville, Md., native has officiated basketball and softball for more than 25 years and has worked at least one state playoff basketball game in West Virginia for each of the past 11 years, including the high school championship in 2000.
Keys and his wife, Lori, a native of Lynchburg, have two children, Josh, 20, and Jamie, 19, both of whom currently attend Liberty University.
