what is the board feeling on the irish? i am not a fan of them getting a BCS bid if they win 9 games, ore are in the top-10. is that the qualifications for the irish to get a BCS bid?? i think you need to be a part of the big 6 conferences(acc, big 12, big 10, sec, pac-10, big east) to qualify even though with the weakness of the big east now, maybe if notre dame is higher ranked than the big east team or the other conferences who are not a part of the automatic bid process. a team like oregon and possibly the acc and sec runner-up could get the shaft, and i think they are more deserving. please someone, clarify the BCS process, and state your feelings on ND.

smooth:
WELL SAID. It's a joke the BCS/ND arrangement. It's been a joke from Day 1. Tech got hosed in 2000 when they were 10-1, ranked in the top 6, 1999 NC runner up, and the Fiesta takes ND who promptly gets spanked by Oregon State 41-9. ND plays by their own rules. Their schedule this year looked daunting at the beginning of the year but as the season wore on ND really didn't beat anyone. Their claim to fame was losing a close one to USC, who almost lost to Fresno, who lost to Nevada.
ND is a Gator Bowl team.

another point/question....does ND share their tv revenue with the other BCS schools? i know each conference splits their tv revenues with member schools, but ND keeps every cent of their tv deal??? there is just not equality with the irish. i guess their little deal with the big east to play i believe three big east teams a year is good enough. and in the next few years they will start playing duke??? michigan is backing out as well, so who will they schedule next army?? the whole thing could be resolved with a playoff system, but that's not gonna happen either.

bigsmooth - ND shares with no one. That's why their warchest is so gargantuan. That's also why they have no interest in football conference affiliation. NBC practically underwrites their program.
As for whether they should in BCS, it doesn't make any difference. Other than the national championship game, the BCS is simply a cash register for schools. None of the othe rgames really mean much and the ratings slide is evidence.

great argument on this topic the other night on Friday Night Football (?) on ESPN between Mark May and Lou Holtz.
of course, Lou didn't want to take sides, but stated its easy to see why ND WOULD get an invite, and NOT easy to see why Oregon WOULDN'T. he did admit it is inherently unfair.

(it was a confusing point- I believe LH was saying its easier to substatiate the INCLUSION of ND than the ESCLUSION of Oregon)

holtz provides a jaded view. he is not qualified IMHO, to even give his opinion about the irish.

I will preface this statement by saying that I am a big ND fan...don't hate me because I'm Irish.
That said, if you consider the BCS the place where the best teams are rewarded for their season, I think ND deserves to be there more than Oregon...I also think Auburn and Miami and Ohio State and a few others deserve to be there more than Oregon (and maybe more than ND) as I don't think that Oregon would beat any of those teams on a neutral field.
If you consider what the BCS really is, a huge money making machine, there is no question that you take ND. They bring the numbers.
The answer that solves all of the controversy is to have a post season tournament. Which happens first? 1-A football playoff or Liberty playing 1-A football?

LU playing I-A ... hands down. The playoff system is still way too far in the distant future.

Its college football, and its still a business...im with Mark and admit im a big ND fan, but i would never back them as much as i do if they would play a cupcake schedule. Sure they have a few slugs, but they still play at very difficult schedule and as for this year had done really well ( 2 plays away from being undefeated....OT mich st. and a qb sneak USC) but until things change into a playoff system...why would ND join a conference, they make just as much money with NBC to not have to, and in reality dont need a bcs bowl for the cash, but THIS season u cant deny they get some credit...hater or not. Until its a playoff system, i think we all agree that even with out Notre Dame in the mix, is a mess thats gonna be argued until a change is made.
