I was involved with the game day activities (Football) 6 years ago, and I have to agree that they were pretty lame. The reason they were lame is that for there was no true student interest (and we didnt really reach out to the students) and reaching out to the community consisted of taking stacks of tickets to local businesses and dropping them off.
There was no concerted effort to apease the Flames Club because they really werent looked at as "the higherarchy" of Flames fans. They were looked on more as donors who used their tax write off for the athletic department. If you ever looked at the chair back seats, they were primarily empty.
All that being said - I was very interested to join the Flames Club now that I am established and would like some touch with the program. Honestly though, what benefit would that have for me? I know that we didnt reach out to them when I was a student, so how have they changed?
HarrisburgFlame - you brought up a good point about the Flames Club reaching out. LU alum are spread out, and I am sure that every place Liberty plays - there are alumni in that area who would love to watch their alma mater play. If the Flames Club or the alumni association would reach out to that local chapter, they could coordinate an outing. I know this brings up the whole other can of worms relating to poor alumni coordination on the part of LU, but that is an "off topic" post.
On another note, I was upset to hear that the new logo and colors havent been streamlined acroos the athletic department. Pitt had the same issue with its logo and shades of blue. Believe it or not, there was no consistent Panther design or shades of blue and gold that transcended the athletic program. When Steve Peterson (now the AD at Nebraska) came in, he streamlined the uniform colors, designed the logo, and got rid off the "Pitt" moniker and made everything Pittsburgh. The old alumni group was furious, but instead of fighting them, Petereson disbanded the organization and restructured it. Do you think the new AD will see the benefit of having a streamlined athletic department or be too busy raising money. What about the "Flames Club"?
All "clubs" associated with Athletic Departments must deal with displaced alumni. This challenge is even greater with the reach of LU and core that makes up its student/alumni base. I am even more convinced that there is a following with Liberty sports due to the grassroots growth of this message board relating to LU Sports. Do you think there is any hope for the "Flames Club"? I know I went to the Youngstown State game last fall and was the only one who donned Liberty gear. Y'town State is 1.5 hours from Pittsburgh, and I know there are a TON of alumni from Western PA and Eastern OH that are Liberty grads. I really feel that if there was an outreach or a strong alumni association or "Flames Club" that there would have been a decent showing at the game.
Do any of you think if Liberty offered tickets, dinner, or some type of gathering at away football games/basketball games that it would garner interest?
