in seeing all the old talk of the old liberty gym, i cant help but think of the most memorable game there in my mind when i was there was The ETSU game that was on ESPN, and the lights went out during the telecast.....did a student not pull the plug? in football it has to be the debacle against delaware state which we blew the huge lead. any other ideas?

Well BigSmooth, you'll have to forgive this young gun for saying that the most memorable football game has to be the incredible comeback against VMI...or upsetting Gardner-Webb.
In basketball, I'd say its beating High Point for the 2004 Big South Championship, or losing to Winthrop the night the lights went out on campus which snapped our home-conference winning streak.

February 10, 1986 Liberty Gym - LU 85 Longwood 84.

My most memorable hoops moment comes from that same season as H-burg. But I don't think it was against Longwood. I believe it was Towson St. or Mt. St. Mary's. It was when Freddie Morgan hit the buzzer-beating 3-pointer for the win. We rushed the floor of that old barn and that night was electric.
I'm sure Scar can provide more details. But that was incredible.
As for football, we played at City Stadium most ofmy time on campus and there weren't many spectacular games. The first time we beat JMU for our first victory over a I-AA school pretty incredible. I can't remeber if that was '85 or '86.

come on now A-train....im not that old! i think the vines opened up my soph. year. yes that high point beat down was nice...the loudest i have ever heard at the vines, and any radford matchup from 89-93 when i was there....sheer hatred and a lot of smack between the two teams and fans!

yeah BIGSMOOTH (was gonna abbreviate you BS but thought it would be interpreted wrong!) the power outtage the night of the ESPN broadcast was a couple of brave if not altogether seniors ( believe) who quite adeptly knocked the breaker off one of the main transformers.

Most Memorable moments...
Men's basketball:
2003 Big South Championship (I think it was) LU playing Radford in the second round, and Gabe Martin has this amazing dunk and the Vine Center roars (too bad we lost by 2 points).
Of course the 2004 Big South championship over Highpoint was pretty good as well.
This past year during the Radford game at half-time...there was some guy on the LU dunking team that could just throw it down...I know they were using trampolines, but he should be immediately recruited to play as a walk-on.
Women's basketball:
2003 I think...LU beats UVA in overtime at the Vines. Krystal Tharp makes a HUGE 3 pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. (I told ya she was clutch).

Anyone remember Arkansas State comin to the Vines and their miracle shot that gives them a victory by 1 point? I just remember we were all excited and everything and then stunned silence.

It wasn't a miracle, he had been doing it all game! I was right in that corner before the play too. I yelled right at Woodson (I think) "hey watch this guy off the screen!" since I had seen him do it over and over. He must have had like 25 points. In bound the ball sure enough he's free in the corner and setting up with the ball. Meanwhile I'm just standing there yelling "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" swish, it goes in and we had no full court plan with 1.5 or so on the clock. It was all in slow motion.
Anyway, the most fun game I've seen was 4 years ago, I don't think we had won a conference game yet and Radford came to town. We played them close the entire game, finally took the lead the atmosphere was so tense and an out of bounds call went our way. Someone got up in front of the Radford fans and excitedly pointed the other way, indicating which way possesion was going and an angry 35 year old woman wearing a Radford shirt ran down 3 rows of chair and started hitting him on the back and on the head. They were both escorted out of the Vines and we went on to win and we rushed the court with what must have been a 2-25 record. Phil Ward, and JR (I can't remember his last name) had the game of their life along with a stellar performance as always from Caldwell, and very few mistakes from Rob Attaway.

I remember the VMI game in 2003 because I was in the band for that game. the Gardner Webb game I was in and out of the stadium running various band related errands. Basketball wise, I can't really say the 2004 BSC championship because as that was going on I was on the way to Powhatan, VA for a drumline competition. The Radford game in 2003 was pretty nice (would have liked to beat them that year though). Maybe this year we can really make some magic in all our sports because we are good enough to win more championships this year than in the past

Do you know where I can get a copy (CD or cassette) of the LU fight song?

Harrisburgflame, I was in the band for 2 years, and I have a bunch of video tape, but I haven't been able to locate the entire fight song without it being interuped by the stadium announcer or some kind of other noise. Maybe we could suggest that someone in the current LU band ask if they could make a copy and put it as a wave or mp3 file on the Marching band site? By the way, the LU Marching band has an alumni site at: lubandos.tripod.com/It hasn't been updated a lot...but it's still pretty cool.

I hope to make it down for a couple of games this year. I think I'm going to the UConn game as well. we get back from our family vacation on September 9th - I'm hoping the wife let's me go to the game on the 10th! I'll be sure to look you up when I am in the Burg. Let me know about the recording - it would be cool to have for tailgaiting on the road to terrorize the host fans!

flamesfan - are they bringing the band up for the UConn game? My sense is no but it would be nice to represent against a BigEast opponent and rising college football program.

I know this is taking this thread completely off-track. But since someone brought it up, could somebody give me recommendations on blog hosts and software? I know El Scorcho is a techie who can give some insight.
And what about Xanga and Blogspot?
Hey, at least this is on the general board. Although it would probably be more appropriate in Off Topic.
Consider this thread temporarily highjacked.

I was actually on the floor or on the bench for some of the memories you guys provided: Fred Morgan vs Mt St Mary's 1986-87. We came back from a hugh deficit. Mount was #3 in the nation division II. The night the lights went out in the Multi Purpose- Feb 1990. That was the same night of my famous (in my mind) dunk that I keep talking about that won't go away (because I won't let it :-)). Liberty beating UVA in Charlottesville was memorable. I have so many memories when I was coaching in the mid 90's but Larry Jackson out in Fresno hitting 8 -9 from 3 points against Cal Poly in the Coors light invitational in 1996 (thats right the beer) was memorable. You guys may know him as GOAT on this board but he was the truth for us in the mid 90's. There are so many Marcus White to Peter Aluma passes for dunks that I can't name one. Jay Boykin in 1995-96 coming off the bench playing 19 minutes a game and averaging 15 points and shooting 76% from 3 point land! What a performance. Too bad he tore his knee up over Christmas Break (2nd ACL injury in 2 seasons for him). Bailey Alston going for 46 vs Ferrum college in 1987. We were both Sophmores and I played 17 minutes and shot 8-8 from the field. The Champion ran my picture because that was a real surprise. We were already taking Bailey's scoring for granted by then...Football wise, I would say when Dave Meggett came in from JMU in 1986 and returned 2 kicks (or punts) for long gains. We knew he would make it to the NFL. Youngstown St ranked #2 in the nation came in to play #12 or 15 Liberty in the new Williams Stadium in 1990 and it went down to the wire before Coach Sam Rutigliano's flames got doused. I remember Charles McCray tried to jump over the top on 1st and goal from the 1 3 times in a row and got stuffed. No one and I mean no one had ever stopped him before. He was money in the bank on that play. Eric Green's senior year catching passes from Robbie Justino was memorable. Also they had a run play where Green would run down the offensive line like a crack back block and destroy middle linebackers! The Homecoming game in the late 90's when LU blew a huge lead against NC A&T I think. The Central Michigan game on the road in the 1990 season when we were going to get our 1st Division 1A football win and I listen to Jerry Edwards describe our guys not being able to fall on a sqib kick that would have gave us the possession to win with 2 minutes left....So many more football and basketball memories....

I was at the MSM game back in the 86-87 season. That was one of the best games I have ever witnessed on any level. Played against Charles McCray in high school. He was a stud back then. I think he was a TE in high school. I know he was much better than the Morrison guy who went to ND off of that same team. Actually, I knocked Morrison flat on his can my JR year. I started feeling cocky and took a run at McCray later in the game - he lit me up.

Yeah, Meggett played for Toswon St. I don't remember his games all that well.
You mentioned Eric Green being unstoppable his senior year. But he didn't do much until then despite have a rep based on dimensions that far exceeded his production.
I'm not sure if Scar was in campus for his senior season, but I'm sure H-burg remembers Kelvin Edwards. Now there was a guy that was completely unstoppable at the DII level. He was big & fast as the wind. The offense was buitl around getting him the ball in open spaces. He spent some time in the NFL with the Saints & Cowboys. I used see Kelvin every fall at Texas Stadium when the Cowboys would welcome back their alumni players. Granted, he didn't get the same applause as Roger the Dodger or Tony D.
By the way, for all of Scar's talk about this dunk, you would think he could get that pic scanned and use it either for an Avatar or signature. I was already off in the real world wondering why I rushed through school by the time he sent that one down.
As for Bailey, I remember everyone on campus hating that year he had to sit out after he transferred, We knew he was something special and it was agonizing waiting on him to hit the floor.

McCray is my main man. He still lives in the Lynchburg area. He was a stud though that is for sure. He set many records as a running back at LU that have since been broken. He had the scoring record but I think a kicker passed him a few years ago.

How about Edwards and Banks? We had two of the best WR's in DII on that team. Edwards was fun to watch. Kelvin was our first real football star in my opinion.

Freddie was already with the Browns by the time I arrived on campus. But it was fun living vicariously through his performances on the Brownies & Dolphins.
As for McCray, he was tough in those days. We certainly could use a runner with his strengths right about now.

I remember when I first found out he was moving to RB when he went to LU. I knew he was going to be a load at RB! He was a year ahead of me in high school. Brookville had a very nice run of good teams. I figured if a guy like McCray was a RB in college - I better just stick to baseball!

Sly,
I should use my dunk as my Avitar. I have it in poster size but I may have a 4x6 in a box somewhere in the attic. I am not ever in town long enough to did it out but maybe before this calendar year is over.
