Okay folks, this doesn't have anything to do with sports, but it's a Liberty topic. Who was it on this board that wrote for the Champion? What the heck's going on over there? Looks like one of the student writers has decided to start a war with the faculty/staff. This article is already starting to enrage a number of staff members, and I don't think this poor lass has a chance when she opens her inbox in the next few days. www.liberty.edu/Academics/Communications/Champion/index.cfm?PID=6021Totally devoid of logic and reason, I kind of wonder if the editor is doing their job.

That was Ed.
But what an idiot this girl is. That's great logic: It's named the student center and thus only students can use it. Ok does that mean only Tim Lahaye can use the Lahaye lounge? And minnie and odie vines are the only people allowed to watch games at the Vine's center. That girl should be fired not for voicing her opinion, but for being a lousy journalist.

i completly agree...all the colleges around here are the same way...and i know that u of iowa has a fitness center that is student only (there is one the faculty can use but it isn't as good of equipment that the student one has)...i think they should be able to use it but yeah they should probably pay...when a gym reaches its capacity you either make it bigger or make it more exclusive...its how it goes...

Hey - its an opinion article - cut the girl some slack. Is LU the only campus on earth where a student cant have an opinion let alone publish it in the campus paper? Please - that is pretty tame compared to what seething articles are written in state schools.
I can see her opinion, but if faculty want to pay $100, let 'em pay $100. More revenue can only benefit the facility and in turn benefit the students.
As far as overcrowding, go at a different time. Honestly, many students that are using that facility are probably using it for social hour at the peak times. I dont think your GNED prof is going to be there at 6:00 PM doing cardio looking for a conversation or a date.

Geez, only at LU would an article THAT vanilla be considered controversial!
A. ITS HER OPINION! B. she's probably less than 20 yrs old, so she has time to work out her writing style. Try reading the pt care documentation my 20-something fellow paramedics come up w/ - nearly unintelligble.
I believe the fact that we are all super-geniouses clouds our judgement at times.

No one said it was controversial, it's just really stupid and is ticking many staff and faculty off. It's obvious that with this being in the paper, of course you're allowed to have an opinion and let others know it. If you're going to have an opinion, you better be able to back it up and defend it, and she can't. And the facility was built with two sets of locker rooms, one set for students and another set that says "Faculty" on the door. I can go on and on, but I'll save that for her.

Just to defend my honor... When I wrote for the Champion, I was really handcuffed as to what I could write. I wasn't allowed to print an article that (logically) said that changes needed to be made to the Liberty Way (the official rules book on campus, in case any of the old-timers didn't know).
I said that it was ridiculous that I couldn't have a poster of Marlon Brando petting a cat, but my roommate could have a poster of the Olsen Twins. It really was a well-written article, I assure you...
As for the topic at hand, she spends 600 words to basically say that faculty members shouldn't be allowed in the student center, and therefore should pay a fee to get in. Very incoherent.
In any event... The opinion section of the Champion works like this: people sign up for the "class" and decide to be columnists. They have to submit something like 5 or 10 columns a semester to getting a passing grade. Of course, there might be some weeks where no one submits anything, so you gotta run something.
This is why, before I came on board, you saw editorials that started like this: "While I was thinking of something to write about..."
Ugh... The paper I slaved over has reverted back to what I changed it from... When I was on board, my sports pages were voted the best in the state (beating Virginia Tech, JMU, Washington & Lee, etc.).
(For the record, I tackled topics such as 9/11, racism, government control, the assassination of JFK, homosexuality in sports... And yeah, Marlon Brando).

Wow - I bet you are really PO'd! I would be.
Congrats on what you made the paper. I wish I had a chance to see those articles.

and why is it that when you attempt to find something in the Champion on line, its like pulling teeth? First of all, the site is pathetic, the archives non-existent, when you DO find an article there is no dateline- I have no idea if I'm reading something from 1995 or 2005.
(then again, I'm easily confused) the point being, its NOT user friendly and hard to put stories into context.
maybe its just me.

You know what the worst part about the article is? It's not very well researched at all. Forget about the absence of logic. She doesn't even know what she's talking about. If she had bothered to get the background on Dave Young's article that she so diligently quotes, she would realize that he was justifying the FEE that Faculty/Staff have to pay to use the Student Center. Somehow, in all of her research*, she missed the fact that Faculty/Staff have to pay $110 per semester to use the Student Center.
Now if you want to look at it logically, maybe she should understand that most of the faculty/staff at LU aren't getting paid enough to listen to smack from students like her. Most of the faculty/staff felt that because of their comparatively small salaries, free use of the center wasn't too much to ask. So, VP Young wrote a very intelligent explanation of why a fee would be needed if they wanted to use the SC. Fine. That's understandable.
Miss Mills needs to understand that the faculty and staff at LU have made very large sacrifices to serve her and her peers. Sharing the treadmills and basketball courts isn't too much to ask.
And by the way, hi. I'm new here.

Que pasa, nuevo amigo. Don't believe a word I say.
I agree that most students have no idea the sacrifice it takes to be on the faculty at LU. They genrrally have to take less pay than other schools of similar standing and work far more. I know a number of friends & family who looked into teaching at Liberty who were astonished at the pay structure. So go ahead and let those profs get a little work in the gym. They certainly look like they could use it.

- SOMEONE please proof read this stuff before putting it online. case in point:

Congrats to the staff over at there: maybe you can parlay this into additional funding to improve the online content. I can't ever find anything online and the archives are non-existent. Champion Wins ‘Best Newspaper’
