Sounds like our new athletic director has got his first task... GET IN THE A-10!!!
We've discussed this before and said that it would be the best - and with the A-10 falling down to only 4 teams (needing six to qualify for the playoffs), it's a fit.

Looks like football is dead for the A-10 so it may not be an option for LU. That's a shame because Big south conference football is probably three years away from qualifiying for a playofff bid. I've said this before but I will state it again...the Big South Conference is going nowhere.

I like the idea of the CAA. Much better option in my opinion than the A-10. The A-10 is going to lose Temple to the MAC for all sports and then you're left with a bunch of teams that play in dinky gyms and names that start with"St.".

we've covered every conceivable angle of this one- it would be great if "somebody" could find a source in the AD's office that would be willing to come on here and update us on what THEY are really gonna do. (or attempt to do) 'Til then its all conjecture.

The great thing about the conferences shaking things up is it will create opportunity. But we have to be ready - you don't want to get left behind!

Well Richmond is going to join the Colonial for football, but listening to the recording of the press conference that they have on their site, it seems the Patriot League is also looking for expansion (as Richmond rejected them). Now granted the Patriot won't be the Colonial as far as being a power conference, but ANYTHING would be better than a Big South without an automatic bid. In order to get that automatic bid, the Big South should look at adding Division I newcomer Central Arkansas-that or pressure Radford and/or High Point to get a team to add fuel to our rivalries with those schools.

The Patriot for football would not be a bad move. There is some good 1-AA football in that league. Does anyone know if all of the Patriot League schools are now offering scholarships? I thought Lehigh was still offering financial assistance but not full scholarships.

The Patriot does not offer scholarships. There was a huge article on Bucknell in the Sunday rag, and their AD was fighting with the powers that be to start offering scholarships.
Oh, and a little known fact - in men's b-ball, the Patriot Conf. was the only conference to not win a game in "the dance" until Bucknell knocked off Kansas. At least the BSC won the play-in game that one year.
The Patriot Conference is not a fit.

No scholarships in the Patriot- no idea why not either. Here's a long but interesting article from Lehigh's website on how they recruit, good reading for our ADs office though I'm sure they don't care to take MY word for it. bw.lehigh.edu/story.asp?ID=18358here's the important quote though: Because Lehigh is part of the Patriot League, they cannot award any scholarship money to players in return for their services. Linda Bell, director of financial aid, said all money they receive is based directly on need, just like for every other student at Lehigh. Bell said football recruits and recruits from other sports who also receive financial aid packages early receive no special treatment.
“Everyone is treated the same,” Bell said. “Their benefit is finding out earlier. No more money, no more breaks.”<br>

This time a year ago they were discussing getting rid of athletics all together. There's no way they could support a football team that's never gonna make them any money. Radfurd = a one trick pony. And that trick is getting tired.

I agree about Radford being a very distant candidate to add football due to $$$. I do believe however the president at RU is retiring this year and I know he was a road block for football. I talked to one RU grad who said this may open the door for football.
I for one doubt it but the idea isn't too far-fetched.

I will be surprised if High Point or Radford ever add football. But even if they do, it will be several years away. The talk is that Presbyterian will move up from D-2 and wants to move into the Big South. But even that scenario requires a three year period (i think) before they qualify. Either way, Big South football is years away from being playoff eligible.

There's a better chance of RMWC starting up a I-AA football program than Radford. Like LUConn said, Radford wanted to scrap their entire athletic program and get rid of sports. I believe they still have the faculty support for this. Football for them is not a possiblity. We might as well see if Mars Hill College wants to try to move up to I-AA, if we're really that desparate for teams.

You might be right but I have had a few of my Radford buddies say it IS a possibility. The preseident has been the one blocking football according to them and adding football my drive alums to give more $$$.
I'm a merely the messenger here.

I think Randy Mac could field one stout team if they did start up a program based on the makeup of the student body when I was in Lynchburg. Scary.

Anyone wanna add Savannah State as an associate member for football?
Or we could make Longwood a full member and then add pressure on Hampden-Sydney to move up and add them for football.

HS-C wil NEVER move beyond D III. I used to coach football down there and they are and will always be an ODAC school. There is no plan at all for the school to move up to a higher division in athletics.

The way you guys are talking, you want to reform the Mason-Dixon Conference. Frankly, we outgrew those schools 20 years ago. Let's try to expand our horizons.

Sly, I agree with you. Waiting around to see if a program may or may not add football is not the way to go. I know Liberty still has a lot to prove in football and I believe they will have success, but I have no confidence at all in Big South football. There are numerous reasons beyond football why LU needs to be looking elswehere. I hope one reason Thom Park is being brought in as the new AD is to seriously begin the process of looking elsewhere. Hopefully that question will be asked of him when he is officially introduced in April. Now that LU has had a taste of the sweet 16 in womens basketball, the question will be how do they advance to the next level? If LU is serious, part of the answer has to include moving beyond the Big South. Sorry for the long post.

I agree completely. Very well said. The Big South has got to go. This conference is taking us down with it especially in football.
