This guy is such a tool. He's criticizing Falwell for firing Karcher because it's anti-Christian, when in actuality Falwell should be praised for keeping Karcher on as long as he did.

Six years as a loser head coach is enough. It's not anti-Christian to ask for a little accountability.

I wrote a letter to Mr. Cook in response to his column. I'll keep you guys posted if he writes back to me.

Mr. Cook -

I think you're wrong with your assessment of Liberty sports. I think that Coach Karcher was afforded plenty of opportunities during his tenure as the leader of the program, and he fell far short.

The premise was that Liberty's Christianity is undermined by Falwell's action is flawed, because I feel that it's possible to "have a commitment to help each player understand who he is in Christ" (Karcher's words) and also win.

Take a look at the Liberty women's basketball team (and I understand that Division I football is not on the same par as NCAA women's sports, but I'm just using this as an example). The mission statement there is "to develop women of excellence who glorify God through success in basketball and life." And at the same time, those girls made it to the Sweet 16 last year.

Karcher spent six seasons dismantling a formerly decent program. Falwell personally re-signed his contract last year -- against the advice of everyone around him. Karcher became the highest paid employee on campus, and even now, he had a generous severance package -- in 2009, he'll be paid more than some teachers there to NOT coach football. But the bottom line is, he had to be held accountable for his actions. I don't think that's an anti-Christian stance.

Falwell's desires to go D I-A go back to his statements when he founded Liberty decades ago -- when he said that he wanted Liberty to be what Notre Dame is to Catholics and BYU is to Mormons. Having a successful football program helps in that aspect -- not just for the sake of putting W's in the box scores, but for the sake of getting thousands of young Christians to attend that school and educating them.

It's actually less "Christian" to have people invest in the University sports programs and have a product that is sub-par, mainly in football.

JF is accountable to God first, then the donors as to how he uses their gifts for the sports programs.

Losing millions of dollars is not a very good use of money, which the Lord frowns upon It's called being good stewards. And that lies right at the feet of JF and he's accountable to those who give freely to the University and more importantly, to the Lord.

That guy is a tool. He's going to find anything about JF to complain about because of his personal feelings towards him.

This is a no-win situation.

Remember the column written by the gentleman (?) prior to the UConn game lambasting us for being a group/school of sissy-losers, unable to provide any kind of challenge to a "real" university.

2 months later, another columnist berates LU and Jerry for taking action necessary to upgrade our performance in order to allow our athletic programs to provide such competion.

Darned if you do- darned if you don't.

(I believe this is what the theory of casting pearls before swine refers to. And now I will be ridiculed and scorned for "arrogantly" comparing these writers to swine!)

At least this thread did not get edited or deleted. I remember the discourse being much more entertaining than most. Looks like someone actually came in and sanitized the place--in here and in the general forum. That makes life rather boring.
