I realize its just West Virginia Tech, but anytime you can open a season with such a thunderous victory you can't help but smile.
Perhaps this is just the confidence builder our offense needed. And Kent didn't exactly prove to be a world beater in their debut. Perhaps our first trip to Ohio will push us to 2-and-0.

OK, so much for the great start. But there's nothing like the arrival of a Patriot League team to Williams Stadium to help get back on the right track. Lehigh should be a victory. Period.

Have you any idea of who we're playing this week?
Patriot League or not, they return essentially the same team from last season which should have been in the playoffs. It was only a total screw-job on the part of the selection committee that kept them out.
This year, Lehigh went toe-to-toe with #10 Villanova this past week, at one point, leading by 16 points. We certainly have better athletes than your average Patriot League team but Lehigh is no average team. Right now, they are ranked #22 in the country so, make no mistake, this is a quality football team coming to town.

Libertine --- Dude, lighten up. Yes, Lehigh is nationally ranked. Yes, they beat us handily on our homefield.
But they are a NON-SCHOLARSHIP team! Forgive me for my ignorance, but unless you have the aura of an Ivy League school such as Harvard, Yale or Dartmouth to use as a crutch in recruiting, there is no way a non-scholarship school should be us. End of story.

FYI, Lehigh is NOT a non-scholarship team. They, along with all other, Patriot League teams offer what are called "grants-in-aid" to players who cannot otherwise afford to go attend. These ARE scholarships no different than the ones that Liberty or Gardner-Webb or Georgia Southern hands out. The only difference is that they are not handed out purely on athletic ability and a Patriot League coach does not have a certain number of schollies to give out. The only actual non-scholarships schools in I-AA are those in the Pioneer League and Northeast Conference.

Forgive my ignorance, but to obtain a grant in aid you must first meet all entrance requirements for a school. That's not always the case with athletic scholarships. I have no inside knowledge of Liberty today. But I know it was the practice when I was in school that players on football scholarship didn't necessarily have to meet even Liberty's relatively low standards. Perhaps that is different today.
But let's be honest, LU should most certainly be outrecruiting a Patriot League school with absolutely no exposure outside of Northeeast. Liberty continues to have national exposure which affords more opportunity to bring in higher caliber players. But I digress.
Let's just say it is disappointing that we are the point where the Lehighs of the football world are looking down on us. Hopefully, that won't last for long. This weekend's near upset in Youngstown shows signs of progress.
