LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Athletic Director Donny White announced tonight that Jim Reid has been named head football coach at Virginia Military Institute.
With over 30 years coaching experience, including 15 seasons and 84 victories as a head coach, Reid becomes the 29th head football coach in the 115-year gridiron history of the Institute. He also returns to the Commonwealth as a Division I-AA head coach after directing the University of Richmond football program from 1995 through 2003.
“I am excited that Jim Reid will be our new head football coach,” said White. “He is a perfect fit for VMI. We wanted to find a coach who is an outstanding leader with successful head coaching experience. We have found that man in Jim Reid.”
“It is an absolute honor and privilege to be selected as the head football coach at Virginia Military Institute,” said Reid. “I accept the challenge to elevate the football program to the VMI standard of excellence. I am eager to meet the team and the VMI family.”
Reid, 55, succeeds Cal McCombs, who was relieved of duties Dec. 5 following seven seasons as Keydet head coach where he was 19-60 including a 3-8 mark in 2005.
“Coach Reid is a seasoned head coach and proven winner at the I-AA level,” said VMI superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay III. “We welcome him to the Institute and the VMI-Lexington family.”
A name familiar to VMI football fans while serving as head coach of one of the Institute’s long-time in-state rivals, Reid guided Richmond to 48 wins over his nine years as head coach, which ranks third on the school’s all-time win list. His UR teams also posted three of the top 13 victory totals in school history. He led Richmond to Atlantic 10 championships and I-AA playoff appearances in 1998 and 2000 and was named conference coach of the year both times. He was also selected Yankee Conference co-coach of the year in his debut season of 1995 when Richmond went 7-3-1 and finished the season ranked 20th in I-AA. In 2000, the Spiders won a school record 10 games, including a victory over Youngstown State in the I-AA playoffs. The 2000 Richmond football team finished the season with a final national ranking of sixth in I-AA.
During Reid’s tenure as Richmond head coach, 13 players rose to the ranks of professional football.
Reid left Richmond following the 2003 season to serve as defensive line coach for Syracuse University where he coached for one season. He comes to VMI from Bucknell University where he served as an assistant coach for the 2005 season.
Reid also previously guided the University of Massachusetts football program as head coach from the 1986 through 1991 seasons. He posted a 36-29-2 record over the six seasons as coach of the Minutemen and was the Yankee Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1990. He led UMass to a Yankee Conference co-championship in 1986, and followed with conference titles and I-AA playoff berths in 1988 and 1990.
A 1973 graduate of the University of Maine where he was a three-year starter, Reid began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under thingy McPherson at UMass in 1973, beginning a 19-year coaching association with the school. In 1978, Reid was promoted to defensive coordinator, a post he held until being named UMass head coach in 1986.
Reid moved to Richmond to serve as defensive coordinator in 1992 and held the same post at Boston College in 1994 before being named UR head coach the following season.
Reid and his wife, Judy, have three children: daughters Meghan and Molly, and son Matt, who served as assistant baseball coach at VMI in 2002.
Reid agreed to a five-year contract at VMI.
