Glad I stumbled across this message board. I had no idea a forum like this existed for LU sports. I'll spread the word and see if we can generate some traffic.
That said, I am somewhat surprised by the varying topics related to mens basketball. Living up here in PA now I only got down to one game but listened to all of the games on radio (when the streaming audio worked). I was disappointed with the outcome in the BSC tourney but not surprised. The team seemed to sleep walk through the first half in almost all games or go for long periods of time where they couldn't score. The game against CSU was just that - picked the worse time of the season to hit a dry spell!
I like Coach Dunton and I think he has done a good job cleaning up Hankinson's mess. I think he has tried to engage the community and his vision of LU being a top 50 program is the right one. I also think Jeff Meyer is the best coach LU ever had. I never could understand that deal on letting him go. Almost seemed like a Morgan Hout deal to me - never understood that one either!
As for the BSC - where else could we be right now and compete? In the short term we need the BSC and need to compete in football and basketball before we could ever dream of moving to the A10 or the like. As for the AD deal - the problem isn't with Graham - the problem is the ADept needs a Business Development position or group to fundraise and market. The new logo is a step in the marketing process but the LU ADept needs to embark in the total marketing effort.
Football - I like Coach K. Need to start landing some more Central VA kids like they did when Hout was there. The best attendence drawsLU has had in football were in the mid 80's when you had a bunch of local kids playing.
The Sweet 16 band brings no atmosphere to the basketball games - they play the fight song like you're sitting in a martini bar or something! The atmosphere at the Radford game was awful. Nothing like the days in the Multipurpose Center. Again, total marketing effort - the fight song should be prominent at games.
One more thing - LU needs to publicize the heck out of its season ticket pacages for football - VT and UVA are pricing themselves right out of the family market and LU could pick up a few who won't or can't fork over that kind of dough for tickets.
That's my rant for today! I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming days. Anyone heading up to UConn for the game? I think I'll take my 3 kids and wife - so there will be at least 5 Flame fans in Storrs!

UConn plays in East Hartford (I know, nobody know that). I'll go if I can, my parents live about five minutes from the stadium.
Welcome to the board.

I wonder if the Alumni Association would be willing to coordinate some type of event around the UConn game for LU alums in the NE? Maybe the Flames Club? It would be great to get some Flames in the seats for the UConn game and our first BigEast football opponent.

Dude they play our fight song nonstop. Even when we lose. The main problem is nobody knows we have a fight song, let alone the words. I know the First line is "Fan the flames" but the rest is a mystery. I went to the UNC vs Uconn games a couple years in a row and in the Dean Dome whenever they play the song they have the words scrolling over the scoreboard, it's sweet. Everybody sings along, except for me because I hate them. We have that same text box on our scoreboards but they don't use it for anything.

twice. Once at the end of the first half and again at the end of the game. That was it. On top of that the Sweet 16 butchered it badly - they played it like they were at an Elks Lodge or something! I was disappointed because the game day atmosphere for basketball has gone down the tubes in my opinion.

Great, just we need is another Pennsylvanian ont his board. Once again, we're glad to have another alum who has some passion about the Flames. I have to admit I disagree with you on a number of your points. But I love your vigor. As for the fight song, its not very memorable and as LUconn mentioned, no one knows the lyrics. Those type of traditions have never really stuck with students over the years. Its too bad. I'm watching ORU on ESPN right now and their fans are outstanding for a school smaller than LU stuck in Tulsa.

This just in, the LU Bookstore is selling sleep therapy CD"s consisting of the Sweet 16's greatest hits!
Finally people agree!!! Kerr needs to give the sweet sixteen a little "Fire" in their pants..bad humor i know. Charleston Southern not only out played us on the floor in the first round, but they brough their sorry excuse for a band of like 8 people......sadly they were much better than the sweet 16. They played PEP songs for a PEP band..how ironic.
I will say the dude that does the Cowbell for the Sweet 16 did bring some excitement. If any of you know the SNL Skit with Will Ferrell....it is probably making you chuckle now, he was just like him! If only he could spread the fever..........

it's all part of the experience and you are selling an experience at a sporting event. It has to all fit - the total marketing effort in sports. Last year we launched the new logo but this year the basketball team is wearing the same old duds with the old logo. Why?
One of the gripes on Graham was he didn't raise money - I'm wondering if the folks in the administration know what it takes to raise money and create community involvement and excitement.
if the LU Bookstore is selling those sleep therapy CD's - the cover is probably green and purple or something. Someone needs to remind those bookstore folks our colors are Red, White and Blue.
The univeristy and athletic department needs to undertake the total marketing concept to eliminate some of this identity crisis we have. I want to hear the fight song after we make a run played like a college band would play it - not played like background entertainment at a Sunday Buffet for Seniors!

Whoever wrote those lyrics probably invested at least 60 seconds in the task.
And "Old LU"? Come on, the school didn't even exist prior to 1971. Oh well ...

Has there been any attempt to develop a school fight song or alma mater unique to Liberty University? A good fight song would give our school it's own identity and sense of pride and tradition. Tradition is something which Liberty seems to lack greatly in many different areas. It would be nice one day to be recognized nationally with a good fight song for our University as "the victors" is to Michigan or "Fight on State" is to the Blue Band of Penn State.

What makes "Across the Field", "Boomer Sooner" and "The Eyes of Texas" such a part of our national fabric is not the quality of the music. Its the athletic success that goes along with it.
But I agree that something needs to be done.

ummm, we have no tradition (except losing) win a few seasons and see what happens. that and make knowing the fight song part of mid-terms and finals or you can't graduate. Wait, I didn't graduate- never mind.

In referene to a post mentioning the Flames Club getting more involved. You can forget about that. All that group does is show up for some boring luncheon each week. People have made proposals to scrap that group and start all over but it never gets anywhere. As long as they can go to the luncheon and have a free parking space for the games, that's really all they care about. If you are ever in Lynchburg on a Tuesday during football or basketball season, you should attend the snoozefest to experience it for yourself.

One of the music teachers tried to write a fight song and Alma Mater a few years ago, but they weren't very good and quickly forgotten. The songs are probably still out there, probably on his wall in his office, but they're not coming out any time soon.

Those lyrics aren't that bad. It's kinda catchy. But how did he pinpoint royal blue? I'm pretty sure it has evolved to Navy Blue. So much for tradition.

bedtime story. No kidding. He loves looking at old Flames media guides in addition to his stories. More like look at the pictures since he's only 4. Tonight we did the 88 media guide you posted in the pic. Last night we did the 83 and 84 football guides. Monday night it was 76 and this year's guide!
We are old school Medic!
Hey you asked what I missed about City Stadium - just the atmosphere - I love it over there. I agree though - too many teams using that field during football season - ended up being a goat ranch!
