I know how much love our student body has for Radford. Unfortunately, the Big South schedulers worked against us putting this bigtime rivalry game during Christmas break. But that doesn't mean we can't stoke the fires a little here in The Firehouse. I know LUconn has plenty of emotion about this game. Here's a quickie update on the Highlanders: Whit Holcomb-Faye6' 1" Senior Guard Averaging 22.3 PPG Chris Oliver6' 6" Junior Forward Averaging 20 PPG & 10.7 Rebounds They are 7-5 on season and they started off the season strong after an opening blowout at Virginia Tech. They beat Western Carolina, Bowling Green St. and ETSU in a row. Since then, they've beaten a few sub-DIs and they're coming off a victory over a bad Dartmouth squad. This should be a real challenge since WHF hasn't had one of his major meltdowns yet. He's always very dangerous along with oliver.

I'll have a freaking meltdown if we lose this game. I live for it every year and I'll be in attendence with the other 5 people in the Vines, including Scar, Ray Jones, and Bill Wagner. Thanks a lot Big South. Don't do us any favors or anything. In a league where home games are so important, they're certainly making us sweat 25% of them.

I just wanted to say go Flames! It will be a tough match-up as always. I'm hoping those of you in the stands would yell extra loud for us students that can't be there. I can't believe my senior year I miss out on both Radford and High Point! What a bummer! Oh well.

That sounds crazy to me Chris but you are dead on! Even those great teams with Aluma that I helped coach didn't start 2-0. We have a chance to make and witness more history in the Vines on Saturday! I encourage all of you who are close enough to drive and even those that come from far away like Elicoolbreeze to make the trip if you can. Radford/Liberty is really a great time. 2 years ago Comcast Sportsnet picked it up as a last minute game on tape delay (thanks to a certain color commentator driving the tape up to Bethesda MD.).

I'd like to commend the Big South on a dynamite job of scheduling. Only they could take a college basketball tradition such as "rivalry week" and say that it's really not that important to have. You know?
Gee, I can't think of a better way to bring attention to our conference than have a lukewarm atmosphere at one of the few marquee matchups in the league.

Seriously...who in their right minds would schedule RU and HPU at LU during break? Those are definitely high profile games that would draw in a bunch of student spectators.

that tool kyle kallander probably had something to do with it. i feel he has it in for LU. if there was new leadership in the conference office, then maybe we would have some more football memebrs, but i digress....i will be there rooting for the flames sat. night.

Wow..is this the first time you guys have had conference games during winter break? Every year, WU has one or two games during the break, and it used to always be against Radford or Coastal (two of the bigger rivals...)...I guess I've gotten used to it so it doesn't really annoy me. But it's going to happen to some teams every year...but I guess you guys are more annoyed by the opponents during the break, right?

My thing is why not schedule like Coastal and Chuck South vs Liberty and VMI over Christmas break. Winthrop vs VMI or whatever. The games that prolly won't have many fans travelling to should be during break.
I mean honestly, how many LU students are gonna go to Coastal on the 28th for the game? I highly doubt there'll be many.

Yeah, KK did a fine job of watching the Southwest Conference die around him. Not everybody can say they had a conference disappear during their short reign. I believe he then spent some time working at CCU before landing the commish job for the Big South.
We understand there are going to be games scheduled during Christmas break, but the schedulers have to know that there are certain games that shouldn't set during the first week of the season. And Radford-LU is on the short list. Its one of the few true rivalry games the conference has. And by putting it during the break instead of scheduling long distance matchups as mentioned earlier (when the travel wouldn't require as much time away from the classroom) the league is marketing itself poorly.

I'm making note of it in a notebook that will run tomorrow ... When Liberty-Radford was scheduled during the second semester last year, attendance was close to 6,000, I think. Two years ago, when it was over break, it was close to 2,100.

The Big South always pisses someone off when scheduling. WU was ticked last year when that snow game had to be made up and they made the eagles play something like 4 games in 7 days.
It does seem like they would want to at least schedule the LU-RU and WU-Coastal games when school in is session.

It's not that it's the only time we've had games scheduled over winter break, but usually Radford is reserved as our last game during the regular season, and also the last game during the first conference go-around -- largely because they're our primary rival. The issue is that the Big South could have gotten a nice atmosphere in a game -- they probably could have even televised it -- but they didn't want to do it. I understand that basketball can't stop for four weeks while everyone is away. But would anyone complain if during those weeks, our conference games consisted of Charleston Southern and Birmingham Southern or something?

a conference the size of the big south needs to look better at the schedule. they know LU and winthrop draw the best, so why not adjust the schedules. no slap to thother big south schools but they rarely have fans at their games and the attendance figures prove it. LU is losing needed revenues when we play schools like radford over the break. LUConn i have tried to write kallander, but never get a reply. he also used to have a ask the commissioner segment on the big south site, and all his answers to questions were very vague. he would make an excellent politician.

I've been busy and haven't popped in on the basketball forum lately, but it just occurred to me today that this game would be going down during break. I'm making tentative plans to come. All depends on if the +1 is up for it. I'd really like to be there tonight, though. Especially in light of the Big South's scheduling blunder.

He answered one of my ask the commissioner questions...but nothing since then. I asked about artificial noisemakers...(I had little plastic hands that you shook that I spraypainted red and blue...they clap a little louder than clapping your hands...I used to take them to games...no one ever complained, but then they started announcing that the NCAA has rules against noisemakers). I emailed the compliance person at LU, I can't remember her name. She was really nice and got back to me and said there was a Big South rule against noisemakers. I then posted the ask the commissioner question, and the response was it was an NCAA rule. I then went to the ncaa website and finally found where I could download part of the rulebook as adobe acrobat file, which took forever, to find that they only ban noisemakers during live gameplay...and so they were okay during timeouts and breaks...so technically, I think I could've still used them before free throws, but I left them at home
