With the final game of the season being played this week, when and where is the Big South Tourney being played?
Hopefully we can beat Asheville and lock up that second seed!
If Liberty can make it to the finals and play Winthrop (or any team for that matter), I might actually get to watch the game on ESPN!!!! Woo Hoo!!

The Big South does not use a central site like most of the majors. As a 2 seed (which we apparently are going to get irregardless of the UNCA outcome due to tiebreakers), we will host the quarterfinal & semifinal rounds of our side fo the bracket. If we make it to the championship game, we would have to travel down Carolina-way to Winthrop.
At least that is my understanding. If anyone has conflicting info, please share.
Bottom line, all three potential tourney games for LU would be on TV ... the first two rounds on the Flames Television Network (with the smooth-sounding analysis of Scar) followed byt he championship game on ESPN2.
If you have Sky Angel or live in Lynchburg, life is good. The rest of us will have to hope we make it to the final.

Actually Sly, I only get to call the quarter-final game. The semi final games (both) are done by BSTN (Big South Television Network) and CSTV which is a college sports channel on Direct TV. So if you have CSTV or Fox Sports South you will pick up both semi final games regardless (Sly, irregardless is not a word . Next season I hope we get all of the Liberty channel games on CSTV. We would have much more exposer for the team (and me). Also if we win the first 2 rounds and Winthrop were to somehow get upset, we would host the final game as well on ESPN2.

We get CSTV down here in Houston on one of the digital sports packages. I can pick it up at my work. CSTV has picked upa bucnh of contracts with conferences in the past six months as they prepare to buckle down for the competition from ESPNU and Fox College Sports.
By the way, I have been trying to get on with CSTV as a play-by-play guy for events down here in Texas. I had a chance a few years back when they were first starting to do some Big XII events. But my station contract wouldn't let me. Now I am free to do it and I'm working hard to get back in the mix.

Sly,
that sounds great! Wouldn't it be great to work together someday. 2 LU grads on National TV (well FTN is National but you know what I mean). I have a couple of contacts with CSTV up in New York. They love our production and they really like me but I have not gone after anything specific just yet. You have to let us know if you get on because I would like to check you out.

Scar, what is going on with you these days! I guess you made it back to LU. There is nothing like giving back to your alma mater. I just recently got word that Liberty had a sports message board and I saw your Top 5 Liberty players of all time. I would have to say that is pretty accurate but I wanted to give you the Top 10 players regardless of wins in Liberty History (in no particular order) 1. Marcus White-hands down greatest PG in LU history was held back by the offensive system. Was Iverson like. Made Earl Boykins ( look stupid in Hawaii. 2. Peter Aluma-Best years were his Sophomore and Junior Years should have been lottery but he didn't have the drive and coaches did hold him accountable enough. Put Liberty on the national map. 3. Chris Caldwell - could flat out put the ball in the hoop and played for the worst coach in America. 4. Julius Nwoso - Amazing athlete and put up quality numbers in 3 years. Should have been in the NBA longer but lacked the drive. Physical Specimen! 5. Jay Boykin - Limited Career due to injuries but before the injuries was in the mold of Rex Chapman. Superb athlete who could flat out fill it up on limited touches and will dunk on you! 6. Matt Hilderbrand - mark of consistency, heady player who could shoot the rock also. Made UNC look unprepared in Scouting Report. Mark of consistency. 7. Jason Dixon - Double Double waiting to happen, one of the top rebounders in the country as a Senior. Would pipe on you in a heart beat improved tremendously after college. 8. Kevin Benton - Stupid game, held back due to system but changed his game for the team. Absolutely unstoppable 1 on 1 just ask Barry Taylor. 9. Larry Jackson (GOAT) - Hit more big/clutch shots than any player in LU division one history. Single handedly beat UVA by himself. Master of the mid range pull up and teamed with Marcus White to form the best backcourt in LU History. Scored over 1500 points being a 3rd option with less than 15 shots a game for career. 10. Bailey Alston - over 2000 points in 3 years, need I say more. 11. Darryl Williams - Underappreciated for the talent he had and system played in. Sick Hops with great defensive presence. What do you think about that Scar? You and Jason Allison are definitely the top scout team players in LU history! Hit me back LJ

Welcome to the board, LJ. I think you'll find the discussion entertaining at times around here. And who could live without the snappy (if not acerbic) repertoire of Scar?
You youngsters may not have seen Scar or Bailey play. But I can attest they did have serious game. Well, at least Bailey did. ;D
Tell me, LJ. Did Scar recruit you or just try to coach you?

GOAT, I LOVED LARRY JACKSON'S GAME BUT I WOULD GIVE THE NOD TO CALDWELL AS BEING THE MORE COMPLETE PLAYER, LARRY WAS A BETTER THREE POINT SHOOTER, BOTH SHOULD STILL BE PLAYING IN MY OPINION. I WAS ABLE TO SEE MARCUS WHITE PLAY ON TAPE HE WAS PRETTY GOOD, HOW ABOUT EDWARD "GUMBO" MARKS, AND CJ COWGIL AS THE BEST BACK COURT OF ALL TIME @ LU. LOL NO REALLY IT WOULD BE HARD TO ARGUE WITH YOUR POST GOAT. CARL WILLIAMS AND CALDWELL WAS A PRETTY GOOD BACKCOURT TOO, AND CURRENTLY DEES AND BLAIR MIGHT TURN OUT TO BE THE BEST (PERIMETER COMBINATION). SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS POST TO LATE TO START OVER. SLY, HOW ARE THE PLAYOFFS GOING IN HOUSTON?

Neither Willowridge nor Hightower made it to the postseason, believe it or not (even Milby who went undefeated last year en route to the 5A crown failed to make the playoffs). The new Ft . Bend school Marshall is the area's top squad and they're the 2nd-ranked 5A school in the state. The boys playoffs begin tonight. If you want to see the impact of Houston hoops, check out the upcoming draft projections from nbadraft.net: 2005 NBA Draft ProjectionGerald Green at 7th overall plays Gulf Shores Academy in the old Sharpstown Mall. Daniel Gibson at 14 overall is from Jones HS. Of course your Willowridge boy Daniel Ewing is currently at 23 after being as high as 15 recently. Down at 48 is Lamar alum Lawrence Roberts. Little Luke out of Bellaire/Baylor/Okie State also has legitimate shot at getting drafted as well. Not bad for one city, eh? This is all the more reason we need Stephon's Bayou City connections to deliver some more good to the Flames.

LJ,
how have you been? You hold the record for the longest post in firehouse history but you were pretty entertaining as always. I would put you and Larry Blair on my all comedian team. Not many people probably know about the sense of humor on either of you. As for the best backcourt in LU history? I would say you and Marco were tough but I would have to give it to Alston/Scarborough because of the fact that we averaged nearly 40 points per game and we didn't have a big man to speak of due to Nwoso being ineligible. Ok so what Alston scored 26 of the 40 ;D. No really I think Marcus White Jay Boykin and Larry Jackson was as deadly as a perimeter combo there ever was at LU. Too bad Jay got hurt. Caldwell, Williams and Wallace were fun to watch one year too. I kind of like Woodson Dees and Blair especially if they win 2 Big South Tournaments in a row (it could happen). Welcome aboard too GOAT. You should sign up as a member LJ. If you do you need to keep GOAT as your name.

Sly to answer your question about LJ being recruited, he was here when I arrived as a coach but I knew the whole team before I got here because I went to a lot of games even though I lived in the DC area. LJ was a pretty good frosh and Boykin was on a medical redshirt and Marcus White was a Prop 48. So when I got here we had all 3 plus a few other hoopers not to mention Aluma. We won a lot of games in those years! But sadly 2 losses in the Big South Championship in a row.

LUconn, I forget where you live. Do you get Comcast in mid atlantic or in the Northeast (Philly, NJ etc.)? The Mid-Atlantic is the one that we get here in Lynchburg. I guess that is where I will Tivo the Semi-final game for LU and the other game will be on WDRL in Roanoke so I will get to Tivo both games this year.

I have some friends from over here in Texas who work for Comcast Mid-Atlantic (in both DC & Baltimore). It sounds like they have a decent coverage area. Cool.

Every cable operator in each city has a different setup. But you should check on CSTV. They have been added to all the Time Warner systems in Houston, Austin, San Antonio & Corpus Christi. So there's a good chance they have already or plan to add it there in Victoria. CSTV has deals in place with both the Big XII & C-USA. And I believe they may have one with the Southland as well. As for Fox College Sports, I wouldn't hold my breath. Cable systems in Texas haven't been thrilled with the way FSN has carried on negotiations with suystems in recent years.
