I thought they had a shot. Gonzaga can be had. They always get a bunch of hype going into to the tourney.
Good effort by the Eagles.

Wow, the ball bounces a different way and the eagles win. Amazing performance by Martin, and who knows had he not gotten injured late if he would have hit even more.
Now the attention turns to going undefeated in conference and knocking off some big name OOC opponents to get a better seed next year.

yeah right until your coach leaves and you go 1-15 next year!

The Eagles gave the Zags a real scare. Very nicely done, even if Marshall seemed to caught up in the coaching to perform his usual antics. He was preening nonethelless coming out of time outs.
As for the Horns, its one less team I have to worry about in the Dance. Without 2 of their best 3 players they weren't much of a threat to make much noise anyway.

zags go into the tourney with alot of hype? the west coast gets no love in college ball and the zags are awesome every year and no one knows who they are until the get into the tourney...

I disagree. You NEVER hear about them until tourney time when they become the media darlings - that's when the hype begins. They are just another team in my opinion. They play in the WCC - put them in a real conference and they'd be an NIT team.

Adam Morrison is one of the best players in the country and the Zags are for real. One of their best teams they've ever had. You don't beat Ok st. and GT with Elder and not be top notch.
WU proved they can play with anyone in the country last night and they are getting the respect this morning around the nation.
WU is now on the Mid-Major map.

I'll agree it was a good showing for Winthrop and the Big South last night, but don't pump up Gonzaga so much that you can say Winthrop can play with anyone in the country. That's like saying VMI beat VTech, who's in the ACC and beat Duke and GTech this year, so VMI can hang with the ACC. Come on.

Realist - you make it very tough to give Winthrop any credit you know? I was proud of the showing WU gave last night but they can't play with anybody in the country as you suggest. Maybe on a given night they could hang tough as they did with Gonzaga but Gonzaga is hardly Duke or UNC for that matter. Let's see how they do in the tourney going forward. Let's see if Morrison can do it against some good competition. I have my doubts. The thing about Gonzaga as I suggested is that everyone thinks they are so "cute" in the tourney and they might get an upset and everyone goes wild over it. My point is - put them in the ACC and they are a .500 team at best. Gonzaga makes it to the Sweet 16 and it's a success for them and everyone toots their praises. Duke or UNC lose in the Sweet 16 and it's a bad year!
It's pretty sad when your national "respect" comes from losing by 10 to an overrated team. The Zags are just another team.

REALIST: try this phrase once- Thanks, I was proud of them, too
now LEAVE IT ALONE. WU got an automatic bid because that's what the rules say HAD to happen, and then "automatically" got beat. W/out BSC affiliation, LU, Coastal, and even your mighty WU would be grateful to see the NIT. Wake up- the only nat'l respect you'll get is from us guys on here!

Sorry guys, but it's already happened. Try to deny it all you want, but WU is a mid-major power now.

I give up. I was happy to see you guys play well. tried to caution you not to let a hard fought loss to a team like Gonzaga go to your head. WU is the same team that beat us in OT in their own barn. If they are a mid-major power then we are close too.
For what it's worth - I saw ORU live on Wednesday night - they'd take Winthrop to school. Look out for ORU next year - everybody is back.

Winthrop is a decent team. To call them a mid-major powerhouse is a bit overstated. I do think they have the size and quickness to be competitive with just about anyone but they are not going to blow through the Big South like El Nino again next year. Especially if Marshall leaves. I was happy they played well but I am not going to say they are a household name because they lost by 10. Bucknell and Vermont won their games. That is how you become a household name as a mid-major. Lots of teams play close. In 94, 30 minutes into the game LU had UNC by 4 points. That doesn't make them a household name but it did get them some recognition. Gonzaga gets so much credit guys because they won 29 games! That is a lot. Plus they always win 1 or 2 games in the tournament it seems (except last year when Blake Stepp got exposed as 1 dimenional).

I totally agree SCAR. My tirade on Gonzaga was not to imply they weren't a good team - they are - just not worldbeaters. Our WU friends were claiming a 10 point loss to a team like Gonzaga proved that they could play with anyone.
Not so. Gonzaga is a good team that plays in a very weak league - not a powerhouse by any stretch. Morrison is a super scorer though.

yeah, I guess in "WU-world" national respect is interpreted as a 2 second mention on Sports Center. Along the lines of: "as expected, Gonzaga had no problems in the first round, rolling to a 10 pt win over Winthroap" (sic)
ah, the glory days- you're right, we're envious now.

Again, wrong. Winthrop was the major headline in most newspapers Friday morning b/c of the near upset, and was the headline on espn.com all of thursday night and Friday. WU also just signed a recruit who initially was going to either Georgia or Georgia Tech, and he cited that he wanted to go to a "mid-major power."
WU will most likely go undefeated or another 1 loss season in conference next year unless injuries bite. Healthy, no one in the league will come close to competing.
Don't expect Marshall to leave this year. Again no major jobs have him high on the list and he's not leaving for just a little more money at a like school---a mid-major power.

Boy is he in for a disappointment. Let's see should I go to Georgia Tech, where I'll see little to no PT, Georgia where I'll get tons of PT or a team that could easily beat Georgia where I'll get enough PT.
Why don't you sign up for this board and shed the name realist. Because a realist, you are not. WU is not a power house mid-major. Even if some kid who signed up with the team saysy it is. Although mid-major doesn't have a definition I wouldn't even consider WU that. They're a good team in a crappy conference which makes them a crappy team in the grand scheme of basketball. I'd like to see them play the likes of Southern Illinois, Creighton, Xavier, UTEP, etc. to see the eagles get it handed to them. You can come here to a team that you're better than and talk about how in the eyes of the country you're great and you just had a great moral vicotry in your heart, but I'd like to see you say these things to the Salukies. They're too busy winning tournament games on a yearly basis to listen. Winthrop will never amount to anything but an obscure stat that the ESPN geeks pull out once a year as long as they're in the Big South. "The team that goes to the tournament the most blah blah blah..."

I agree LUconn. Bottom line, WU played great, but it is going to take more than one recruit to become a Gonzaga or Southern Illinois. Until WU can prove it belongs in the dance by actually beating a team, it will just be the sacraficial lamb to a higher seed every year.
Look how long it took the Lady Flames to get a 13 seed (nine years). If WU can put together an impressive non-conf record and roll the BSC for several years, then I would classify them as a "power house mid-major" because they may do better than a 14. At this point, that is about as good a seed as they can hope for. The "power house mid-majors" at least get seeds 10 and below.

I agree - time for Realist to sign up and join us on the board. Maybe it's because I live an hour from Bucknell but the noise up here was about BU and Vermont not about WU losing to a team that didn't make it past the second round.
WU will be the team to beat next year in the BSC - but they can be had. Our team had lots of holes this year and they beat us by 2 in OT on WU's home floor.

Realist is just a biased fan same as we are about Liberty. He does not want to see the "real" picture but it is ok. The facts are the facts. Winthrop had a decent showing in the tournament but it is old news the second someone actually wins a game over a higher seed which happened this year and every other year in recent memory. Hampton beat Iowa St 2 or 3 years ago. Of course Bucknell and Vermont made huge splashes this weekend and Butler, Valpo and Miami OH have all had big WINS in the tournament. Playing close does not count as I said before but they should be proud of their experience and look to build on it should they be fortunate enough to get back there again next year but I will say there is no guarantee that they will get back there next year.

you're a bigger and more gracious man than I, SCAR. I'm sick TO DEATH of the inane tripe coming from this guy/girl (don't want to assume) and don't have the time of day to dignify his idiocy with a response.

PA,
I do think WithropEaglesfan is a bit more realistic and humble than Realist. It may have been unfair to compare Realist to the rest of us because in my biased opinion most of us LU fans seem to be a little more reasonable. I was just saying don't try to convince him because his mind is probably made up.

I certainly don't expect anyone in the Big South to hand winthrop the title next year, but it's close to a sure bet as you will get in college basketball. The disparity in talent and coaching is very wide right now. Anyone can beat anyone on a given night and with no at large bid, that is always a possibility, but WU went 15-1, had an RPI 150 spots higher than anyone else, and loses no one, while just about every team loses key players this offseason. WU's season success is going to be determined in out of conference play next year, the conference, without significant injury or a coaching change, will be theirs.

While all that is true, Realist, keep in mind what the pervasive train of thought in the league was heading into this past season. The Eagles will be the unquestioned favorite. But anything can happen in the course of a season on the court. And frankly, anything can happen during an offseason off the court that could change everything. Let's just play the games for funsies before handing over any titles.
BTW, while I disagree with many of your posts on here, Realist. I appreciate your passion. You are always welcome around here as far as I'm concerned.

Great points by all. WU should be and will be the favorite going into next year. The have the bragging right and deserve them until we tip it off again.
I happen to think they'll find it harder to walk through the BSC next year. everyone tooted Birmingham Southern going into the year and they ended up being a train wreck. I think LU will be better and in a conference like the BSC anything can happen.

Its all semantics at this point.
Bottom line is that Winthrop is not the LU Girls B-ball team, and has not consistently dominated the league and often plays to the level of competition. That is why they will never be a legit tournament threat until they prove consistent domination and can hang outside the BSC.
I appreciate your points Realist, but your biases shine through like all of our LU biases.
