The funny part is we used to find an RA and get them to go put a shirt on. But apparently they got special permission after a few times of that. I only don't like them because I think they're just looking for attention. You gotta do something to support the team. I like to heckle players and refs. And where I sit you really can't get any closer to the floor unless you have a cool nickname like "scar". We have conversations with the Refs about calls when they talk back to us on occasion. The year before our championship in our tournament game vs Radford, we were so in that dude Peanut's head. He was like 0-100 in the first half. But then he caught fire and everytime he made a basket he'd look over and smile at us. And then they won. Not cool. Ahhh memories.

LuConn, can't wait for Radford Liberty. But the schedule makers (Kyle Kallander Big South Commissioner) put that as a home game during Christmas break on the schedule! Are they stupid? Don't answer that. Also High Point is during that time too. 2 of the highest attended games if not THE 2 highest attendance games in the entire conference besides the tournament and they (Kallander) put it on the schedule when no students are here? You would think with a name like Kallander that he could work wonders with a calendar but he takes shots at LU all the time IMO. Larry Blair situation...The track and field issue a couple of years back to name 2. Not to mention the many years I have tried to get on Big South Television in vain. No ax to grind here, just stating facts. (but he should use me instead of guys that call coach Dunton Dave and guys who call the vines center the Hines center). Im done with my mini rant for the day.

I did play by play with Larry Richmond for a few LU Baseball Games in '98. You can appreciate this PA Medic - he has a very hot wife (which I am deducing is givemethemic's sister). We had a few classes together in our SMTG days. Good guy.
As far as sports talk, I have to say that we have a similar issue in my neck of the woods. We have two DIAA mid majors in the Pittsburgh market (Duquesne and Robert Morris). They get zero love on our sports stations in relation to college sports since they cover Pitt, WVU and Penn State. The only time you ever hear from one of them was when they hire a new AD or coach. I am sure that LU is not Larry's secret, it is more of a "who cares". We all love LU sports since we are alumni, but our alumni is spread out, and there is zero love in the community, so LU will never get press - especially in sports talk. Plus, there is probably stigma out there that "Christians shouldnt criticize".

- he has a very hot wife (which I am deducing is givemethemic's sister). ;D I'm sure he loved reading that from an anonymous poster on the internet. I'm not looking for exclusive coverage here. It just seems to me that the radio station is based in Lynchburg and has Lynchburg sponsers. Lynchburg has one D1 basketball team. It seems like they'd mention them when they win, or do anything of note, possibly get to know the players on the team. Some people in this town do care as a lot of people that live here have gone there. It would also generate some interest in the team and then even more people would care. Why talk about UVA and VT? It's not like they're any good, nor does anybody care about either's basketball team.

While it may be true that hardly anyone in Lynchburg cares about LU sports there is one reason for this ... the media. As someone who has been in the sports media for well over 15 years (after working for several years in the Lynchburg market in radio) I can tell you that sportscasters and sportswriters CAN decide what people care about.
If our friends at WSET (and WSLS & WDBJ for that matter since LU is in their ADI) as well as the sports talk boys gave the same attention we are now getting from the fishwrap since Chris came to town, there would be a vastly higher level of interest from people not only in LYnchburg but the surrounding area as well. But as long as Dennis completely blows off LU except for a couple of highlights at the end of his sportscasts, the perception will never change.
As somebody who has worked in small markets similar to Lynchburg, it completely baffles me that WSET and other media in Lynchburg would want to blow off the biggest show they have in town. I understand giving VT and UVa their love ... particularly Hokie football. Heck, we do more UT and A&M coverage in Houston than all of our local schools such as Houston, Rice and our three I-AAs. But there is plenty of time to work in some stories. Dennis should be field-anchoring from LU home basketball games at 6&10pm (as long as a truck is available ... and I know WSET has always been a low budget operation).
OK, I'll step off my soapbox now. But I just can't sit by and listen to how the local media doesn't cover us because no one cares. The only reason LC gets any attention is because WSET and the fishwrap cram it down people's throats. Like all the LC alumni who all live in New Jersey care.

GO SLY. its kind of a "Wag the dog" thing. Never bought the old "if people cared- we'd cover it". Yeah- but IF YOU COVERED IT, PEOPLE WOULD CARE! DUH!

have to be fair here and say that it is unreal what CHRIS is doing over at the wrap. You could go WEEKS w/out reading about LU sports back in the day- this guy has 2 articles per DAY sometimes. WAY TO GO MAN, hope you NEVER leave. (though that thought probably has you buying rope and practicing hangman's knots)

Well first of all, on the comment about my sister, I would say you are in the 99.9 % that agree that she is so that's cool. About the lack of local media coverage of LU, I will have to say that Chris has done a great job this year. When you look at TV, I think Dennis and WSET has done really good job of balancing coverage of everybody. Last year they where the only ones who went to Women's NCAA Tourney and the other WSLS and WDBJ didn't come. Well come Sweet 16 time they couldn't follow the team against LSU. As far as Radio WLNI is going to talk UVA because they are one of the biggest affilaite stations and the same with VT as well cause 97.9 is in the same builiding and they are an affiliate as well. I know Dr.Park wants us to take it to the next level and I feel like we have made great strides over the last year and we are continuing to do so in our coverage.

Also Dr Park and I have had some dialog via email about enhancing the Flames club experience by showing FTN highlights as well as doing some promotional stuff. So many ideas need to be implemented and Dr. Park has Kevin Keys and others in there to handle this sort of thing.

Official announcement: www.libertyflames.com/wbball/news.asp?news_id=2868I also have a love/hate relationship with the Sportsline. I listen on my way home in hopes that I will hear something interesting about local sports or to actually hear a sports-related conversation, but it's usually about crap nobody cares about and there's only so much dead air I can take. And LUConn is definitely right, when Rich is on vacation the show is a million times better. I also wish they would leave the conrad kid off the air, he talks way too much and knows absolutely nothing about sports. Then on the AM side, espn radio out of roanoke is pretty good most of the time, except Tuesday through Thursday when local Roanoke guy Greg Roberts has his drive-time show, which is usually aweful. So there's really not much hope for hearing good sports news here in Lynchburg, especially local sports news. Me and LUConn have often thought of starting a show on public access, just to have a little fun with it. Man, that would be awesome.
