At Texas they're #2 right now in both football & basketball polls. Its not a football school or a basketball school ... they dominate in all the major sports. Hook Em And what have they done lately in either? Oh no I, yup, I think I did.

The Horns seem to be doing reasonably well in football right now. I believe they are the winningest team in football over the past five years.
As for hoops, they lost their leading scorer and top two rebounders before Big XII play began last year and still had a solid season. Expect HUGE things this fall barring major injuries.
(( This thread is now completely off-course ))

latest edition of ESPN magazine, D1cky Vitale has Winthrop #62 behind Gardner-Webb, SC State and Farleigh D1ckinson. They did rank ahead of Albany, Alabama A&M and Northwestern State.
the quote attached was " You can win the Big South without a PTPer, but not a Tourney game"
hey, ya can't argue w/ D1cky V now can ya?

thingyie V knowledge of college basketball only spans the major conferences, and that ranking proves it. GW's best player in recent years transferred to Winthrop and is our sixth man. Those rankings are laughable.
Check the winthrop board for the PTPer. Everyone is saying Martin could be playing in the ACC. And mock drafts have him going to the big league.

WEF or anyone else here that can tell us how WU's season has gone and how they're looking?
(I know this is hard to believe, but I've seen nothing on ESPN all evening describing the up-to-the minute happenings of the team that pulled off the greatest loss ever in a first round tourney game to powerhouse Gonzaga.)
*SORRY WEF/REALIST! Last time- well, for now anyway- that I do that! I crack myself up!

You walked into this one PA. Winthrop just won the Pepsi Blue and Gold Classic at Marquette. They just defeated Marquette by 5, and lead the entire way, as much as 13 in the second half. Second win over a Big East school in as many games. If they win a couple more they will start getting top 25 votes and could break in. Scar, I know you liked Gaynor when you saw him---he's taken the next step, putting in double digits in both games and knocking down three's (his biggest weakness). He's Chris Paul's cousin, and he is not going to need that reputation much longer, he is playing incredible. Bradshaw went for 19 and a ton of boards tonight, and Martin (BSC pre-season Player of the year) had a terrible off night 2-14 shooting and we still knocked off a Marquette team with Mcdonald's all americans on the roster. Things looking incredible for WU! Watch espn again PAMedic, we're on there tonight.

Realist, I like Chris Gaynor's game a lot. He was tough as a Frosh and it is hard to play well at the point when you are that young. Winthrop sounds like they are better than last year. They have done well in their non conference schedule in the Marshall Era.

Actually, my original question about how you guys are doing was legitimate. I was actually curious. The slam after that was just me talkin' smack to get the season started on the right foot!

Although I believe that Marquette is not very good, despite their recent final four trip, I am now willing to admit that I believe Winthrop is very good this year, a top mid-major this year, and should get a first round win if their RPI doesn't kill their seeding by us dragging them down. Someone in the Big South has finally set the bar high, and hopefully we will follow.

We shall see. I agree with you somewhat on the marquette statement---they are young, but very talented. That game was a testament to having your starting 5 back. WU had one more offensive rebound than marquette had total rebounds. I think we're pretty darn good, but we will have to knock off Auburn, USC, ECU and lose the 2 to Alabama and Memphis, or beat either alabama/memphis and can lose two others---to be considered among the top 3. Don't know if they're that good, we shall see. So far, a lot of players are looking vastly improved, Bradshaw, Gaynor, and Jenkins. Jenkins was so bad we wanted him off the team last year, and he had 12 pts vs. IUPUI and two huge threes against Marquette, with small minutes backing up Martin. It was a good start, but still a start.

You are certainly putting yourself in position to get some respect at seeding time. But this weekend will be soon forgotten if you don't keep up this type of play.
