I'am not here to bash or anything but since nc state and liberty played last year I wanted to see how the flames were doing. And was Larry Blair highly recruited out of high school? He's a stud. I wish he was wearing the red and white.
Thanks. Go Flames!

State Fan, LB was recruited heavily by the big boys but late in the process when he was pretty much going to Liberty. His dad has told me about Larry's exploits in summer play vs Chris Paul and Mustafa Shakur. Liberty got a great one in him (and Dees but we lost Dees to a transfer). Larry is playing really well this year too averaging over 20 ppg I think.

Scar, I wish state can recruit with the big boys. Our recruiting classes over the past years have'nt been bad but they could better. I wish we would have a different offense. Standing around and chucking up threes isnt basketball. Herb has never really gotten a true point guard. We were in the running for Mustafa but he went to zona. By the way, I know nobody on this boards cares about UNC but that recruiting class next year is ridculous. I guess thats what a national championship can do for you.

Being a former college assistant coach I can tell you that recruiting is very very difficult. State has a lot to offer big time recruits and I know Herb a little and I know they go after the big recruits. Its the getting them part that is tough...Anybody can recruit (There is a Seinfeld reference in there about Rental Cars if you noticed but you have to be a real Seinfeld fan I think to get it).

UNC's class is ah-ight. But Texas has a nifty little class as well headed by Kevin Durant.
Lerry would've been recruited by all the big boy smuch harder if he were 2-3 inches taller. Thankfully, it worked out great for us.

Fox, I saw Dion Dowell was transferring. Was it because of playing time? I've seen texas play and it doesnt look like they have a bench.

Scar - I love Seinfeld & glad they are on DVD now.
"I don't think you do. You see, you know how to *take* the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them. "

Dion is transferring to Rice so he can be near his family here in Houston.
Playing time was definitely an issue. He has been injured but was frustrated with the lack of minutes recently with nearly the entire starting lineup out.
UT is extremely deep. But with three starters and 4 of their top 8 players out that depth is being taxed to the limit (especially down low).
As I mentioned earlier, the Horns have a Top-3 recruiting class coming in that will make it even tougher to get the floor (particularly with Daniel Gibson probably coming back now after missing time due to a concussion).

welcome state fan! living in raleigh i know how the pack fans so much want another national championship. though they have lost some top notch guards in recent classes, they have a chance to be the 2nd best team in the ACC this year. NCSU offers a great facility...though not the atmosphere of reynolds, but i feel they would need an "A" list coach to get over the top. competing against ol' roy and coach K is tough. who would you want if you could have a new coach? dont get me wrong, herb is a good coach, but i do not think he will get you to where most state fans want...a national championship.

Well, Rick Barnes would be nice. It seems like everytime we lose there are fire herb threads and hire rick barnes threads. Him coming back to the acc would be great. Mark Few is probably my second choice. He took gonzaga from a cinderella to a national powerhouse in a couple of years. We want a big time coach that can generate the exciment like Roy did for carolina. Herb has had 10 years (i think) to turn this program around. Hes making strides but not the next level.

The chances of Barnes leaving Texas are extremely thin. He's one of the best paid coaches in college basketball and he has some of the best facilities in the nation. He's the undisputed basketball school in a state that produces a TON of talent. So his chances of winning the national championship are greater at Texas than at any school in the ACC other than Duke & UNC.
The only reason I say there is even a small chance he might consider a return is because North Carolina is his home state. Still, the chances would be VERY slight.

Glad to see KRH get my reference! Statefan, I have a cousin that you and the state fans know pretty well by the name of Lorenzo Charles! His dad and my mom are cousins and grew up in the same household. I am a closet State fan ever since those Early 80 days. I loved Monroe and Corchiani (Fire and Ice). That was during my playing days but we never got to play state. I wanted to see how our backcourt would have matched up. It would have been fun for sure. Herb has been there about 10 years but I don't think State will get to the final 4 with him. As Sly said, good luck getting Barnes. Texas is treating him right!

Lorenzo Charles' name remains a cuss word here in Houston.
He singlehandedly got Jimmy V into the HOF and kept a more deserving coach out (Guy. V. Lewis). But i know I am in the minority of that opinion in this thread.

Guy couldn't win the big one and he had crazy talent and depth. Speaking of, Tom Penders has brought excitement back to the dead Houston Cougar program. If Rick Barnes had Tom Pender's teams @ UT, UT would have won a national championship. Pender's squads were loaded. If Coach Dunton had Pender's squads at UT he would win a national championship.

Coach P has assembled a nice squad right now at UH. But they weren't quite ready for the #25 ranking last week. But they are defeinitely a program on the rise.
Guy took five teams to the Final Four. He was an amazing recruiter of talent and despite all the attention Don Haskins is getting with this movie, Guy was really the first major coach to start recruiting across the color barrier. And this was deep in redneck South. Hopefully the Hall will eventually give Guy his due place there. I just hope it happens while he is still alive. But I'm afraid it will take his obituary to remind people how amaing his career record really was.
