I seem to remeber yawning at a subpar Shenandoah coming to town last year at this time. I hope we don't take this one as lightly considering all of our own new faces.

I'm sure SCAR will add his thoughts as well. Had the pleasure of talking some hoops with him tonight at the game. Team looked OK ... Damien Hubbard is as good as advertised. Anthony Smith is going to be a real nice 2-3 off the bench and they got 14 points and 17 boards out of Monroe and Eck at the 5.
Defense needs to be better, as does half-court offense execution. But when they get into a transition game, they look very comfortable.
I won't be at the Virginia game (covering the LU women instead before making the late drive to Norfolk Friday). Andy Bitter, our UVa guy, will be covering the Flames versus Team Leitao.
Pete Gillen was in attendance tonight.

It sounded like Larry was sharp shooting this evening.
I look forward to your full assessment in tomorrow's fishwrap.

I was at the game tonight, it was somewhat disappointing. But I did see some potential. We won something like 87-71. But the first half was real close. There were a lot of fouls. Risher didn't look too sharp, he got pressured a lot and almost fouled out. He did set up a couple of nice plays from the top though. The refs did kill us tonight, which made the score look worse than it was. Russell's defense was like that of a bullfighter. That was the most disappointing. He did put up ok stats, but I don't think that shows how he performed. Blair made some ridiculous shots, and even threw one down. He played extremely well. Umm, Smith showed some flashes of athleticism and scored a couple points. He will be counted on to contribute right away in the scoring load. My boy Doug "this three looks good" Stewart played poorly on offense and especially defense. Rell Porter had like 4-5 blocks, he played some real good shutdown defense. The other disappointment was the two freshmen, Holland and Baker we're not dressed. The two guys from Maryland, Bigby and Eck were average tonight. I didn't get to see enough of them, but they outplayed Russell on both ends. They each made a nice bucket on offense too. Saving the best for last, Hubbard. This dude is good. He's got this sweet pull-up ugly looking midrange jumper that is money. He also can step out and hit the 3 if he's open, and he can take it to the hole. The offense was best when Hubbard was actually playing the point. He'll be our 2nd leading scorer for sure. Those are just a couple of observations. The defense was real iffy. The offense started out sloppy. Considering how bad Glenville is supposively, I'm a bit disappointed. But it is still our first game.

Alright here is my take on tonights game. Got to see the second have from Press Row with my boy Chris Lang and givemethemic and former Flame Harry Williams. I had to keep telling Harry not to cheer or taunt because media is not allowed to do it but that didn't work out too well when Liberty started to get that transition game going...I really don't have much to add to what Chris and LUStudent said. Holland has a nagging groin injury that may keep him out for a while. Tyler Baker is red shirting due to his ligament damage in his foot that will require surgery. There were 5 walk-ons that dressed tonight. I thought Russell Monroe showed improvement but has a way to go. Doug Stewart will have some good games and some bad but I think he is gaining confidence. Bigby and Eck didn't play a whole lot but both will help on the boards and post D. Larry was Larry. He can go get his shot on teams like that any time he wants. He has more trouble playing Big South teams because they throw all of their defensive attention at him but playing him straight up is just plain suicide. Daimien came as billed by me from day one. He can go get a shot anytime he wants from the point. Don't want to give away too much because Winthrop is reading (wink, wink). As I said earlier I love him at the point guard. Rell Risher and Russell (my 3 R's that came in as Frosh) all started tonight. They all were better than last season and the 3 of them will have an impact on this team's success this season. Russell needs to learn how to change shots and block shots at this level but he will get there. He had some nice moves that were taken away by bad officiating calls IMO. This team is at its best in transition. Everyone can make good decisions and hit those types of shots. I hope they press and extend their defense this season and try to play up tempo. That has not been typical Liberty basketball in the past so I am not sure they will play that way. Who knows. I do get to talk with Coach D on a regular basis so maybe I can convince him! No really I am sure the staff knows their team better than I do. Thats all for now. Big Smooth see you on Friday for UVA!

Sly, no official wrap-up in the fishwrap today. I was there to get my season preview stuff done. That'll run in Thursday's fishwrap, along with the women's preview and the two Longwood previews.

I only stayed the first half because I had a sick wife at home. So in the first half:
Blair looked a little off from his normal self. Nothing to be concerned about since apparently he picked it up in the 2nd half.
Russell is being used at the 5, I guess since he's the tallest but I really see him as a 4. He's not an exclusively underneath kind of player which is what they have him doing.
Risher has got some good handles but he didn't really open anything up for anybody. We're gonna miss woodson in that regard. I'd like to see Blair running the show some since he can penetrate easily and he's a good passer.
Doug Stewart looked great I thought. Miles ahead of where he was last year.
Hubbard looked very athletic and he has a very nice shot. While I was there, they weren't dropping in too much. I don't know if it was his touch or maybe it was just an off night (off-half apparently) but they seemed to be in and then they'd pop out.
Our team looked GREAT when we ran the floor. Everybody knew exactly where to be and it made for some easy buckets. The problem with this is we don't rebound or get back on D fast enough to exclusively play this. Also we're probably not deep enough to keep it up.
Defense looked terrible. These little guys were doing what they wanted. I saw our front court get pivoted around and under so many times I couldn't stand it any longer. The defensive highlight of the night was Russell stuffing a 5'8" PG with his forearm it looked like, without jumping. Unfortunatly, he was fouled right before that happened so it didn't count.
Anyway, we have a long way to go, although everyone elses posts who were there the rest of the game is ecouraging.

My take on the game:
As some of you have pointed out Blair was his normal self. He could have scored every time down the floor if he wanted too. I was very impressed with Hubbard. He played mainly the 3, but also took over at point when Rish was out. He looked very good. The biggest weakness I saw was defending the post. We couldn't stop their big man, and although he may be a very good player at the D2 level, when we begin to play in-conference we must improve down low. I liked the look of Eck when he was in there. IMO it seemed Doug Stewart was lost. Although I believe he will be fine. I really like Smith. I think he will be a solid contributor, and our top man off the bench. Another encouragement I noticed was that when Coach Dunton called someone out they didn't seem to argue with him like some of the guys did last year. I remember once in particular he called Anthony Smith out for standing around watching the guys go for a board. Dunton told him to get in there and get a rebound. Smith just nodded is head and turned around to play ball.
Does anyone know why Pete was there?
Go Flames!

Pete's still in the area, and Alexis Sherard was on Pete's staff at Virginia. So that's one reason.

this doesn't warrent a new thread (or does it?) so I'll spare you all from cluttering up the page.
I'm sitting here staring at the roster from last nights game, which hopefully will be back to being free this year, and it lists some stats. Only 5 out of 12 have stats! And they're not pretty either. Our returners add up to 25.9 points per game, and 16.6 of those are Blair's. 10.8 rebounds per and 4.9 of those are Blair's. 4.1 assists per game and 2.4 of those are Blair's. 1 man is 59% of our team. Just thought that was humorous/concerning.

Its hardly a news flash considering Dees, Robinson and the seniors being gone. But your point is well stated. I'm just thankful we have Larry for this year and one more after that.

That why the good Lord invented Juco Transfers. You will have 3 proven players step in right away. Plus Risher, Rell and Russell and Doug Stewart will all contribute more now that Dees and the seniors are gone. Nothing to be alarmed about really. Stats don't really mean a whole lot once the game starts.
