Guys, working from Lynchburg this week has allowed me the priviledge of being around the team for a few days. So far I really like what I see. The atmosphere is really positive in the gym. I was there for most of the practices last season and sometimes you could cut the tension with a knife. This group of kids works hard, is commited to defense and best of all seem to genuinely like each other. Not sure I could say that about the 04-05 flames. Damien Hubbard's work ethic is refreshing. His skill package seems to be boundless. I think he may help us win some games . No reflection on last year's staff because I think the world of Bob Davis and Stephon Leary both of who I have known for many years as Bob was a Juco coach that sent us many great players including Darryl Williams and Jason Dixon from our 94 championship team. Obviously my relationship with Steph is well documented (Sly will get upset if I go into my resume with Steph too deep so lets just say we go way back). However Alexis Sherrard brings Big East and ACC experience to the team and that gives a fresh perspective that has not really been available in the past. Zack Jones is a real asset as well. He has a real vision for getting the players involved in community service as well and getting the fan base up in the black community which right now shows Liberty very little love (with the exception of a few of us individuals)....Here is my starting 5 so far based on what I have seen (no inside scoop or anything). Point -Evan Risher. 2 is Blair. 3 Damien Hubbard who by the way has more fakes than a rolex vendor in Time Square. He will make defenders look foolish this year. 4. Rell Porter-he is playing the best ball of the candidates right now but look out for Bigby and Stewart as contributors. Bigby is super athletic but not very big. Kind of an unorthodox game but very effective. 5 Russell Monroe. Russell shows flashes of being good but he still has a way to go IMO (in my opinion, GRM). Jeremy Eck is a long player that I really like and I think he can be a leader. He practices like he really understands the game and is willing to do what it takes to win. In summary, I like the perimeter game but we are thin in the post. If Eck and Russell get in foul trouble it could be a long year. They would probably have to go really small and play a 4 in the post. I am excited about this season. It is going to be challenging with all the new faces and with no seniors, leadership will have to imerge from within the group.

Nice report SCAR. Seems very encouraging to know that the morale is better than last year which is very important for continuity. I am surprised to not hear about Anthony Smith or Justin Holland. How do they fit in this year? I would think that both of them would see significant action and possibly could start based on what I hear and based on their high school credentials. I would think that Damian Hubbard could alternate between a 3 or 4 forward position (similiar to what Gabe Martin did a few years back) to make room for Smith. Just my opinion based on what I know but I am sure an insiders opinion would be more accurate. Could have used Miller this year in the post but hopefully can get some decent play out of Monroe or Eke to complement strong perimeter play. Hope to surprise some people this year since our ranking has been rather low based on what I have been reading.

Thanks for everything, you guys, and thanks especially to SCAR for a great and insightful report (and for educating this dummy). I guess we're all excited, and even that is exciting.

Let me guess, Scar is building some street cred for journalistic ambitions? ;D
I appreciate the honesty in the rundown. I'm really anxious to see how cohesive all these newbies can be together on the court right from the start.

Stevev,
Anthony Smith is a really good player. He is going to see significant minutes. I love his work ethic and attitude. Just a great kid quite honestly. He plays the same position as Blair and Hubbard so he will have to be a subordinate I think. Don't get me wrong, he will have games where he plays a lot but I don't think he will move Blair or Hubbard out of the starting lineup. Now Hubbard could end up playing at the 4 like Gabe Martin later on in the season but he is such a good perimeter player. Justin Holland is solid right now. He is a fiesty defensive player and is skilled with the ball. Personally I think Hubbard looks better as the backup point right now but that is because Justin has been hurt. I loved Justin in high school the past 2 seasons and he will definitely be a positive contributor. They scrimmage on Saturday so I will give you guys some more info after that. Maybe coach D will get logged on at some point this weekend as well. They have at least 1 recruit coming in this weekend as well. BTW Coach Pete Guillen formerly of UVA was in town the other day and he and I watched practice together. He had a lot of positive things to say about this group. He agreed with me that this team works hard, plays together, and is really athletic. We all went to dinner afterwards and he had a lot of insightful stories to share about his time at Xavier, Providence Notre Dame, VMI and UVA (not in that order). In case you are wondering, Pete Guillen is going to be doing television this winter on CSTV. Maybe he might get back into coaching next year but for now he is doing the TV thing.

I was a big Guillen man back in his days at X. Despite having Huggins across town in Cincy, he built one great team after another at a tiny school without a tremendous history. Pete will wind up working somewhere again real soon. He's now a coach doing TV and not just a TV guy who used to coach.

Very true about Pete. Talking to him gave me the sense that he would love to do it again. Talking shop with the coaches you could really see his enthusiasm and love for the game. I think he will be on the sidelines somewhere next year too. He said it would have to be the perfect opportunity though.

There is no such thing as a perfect opportunity. Coach K, Roy Williams, Rick Barnes, etc... are going anywhere so that takes away all the perfect opportunities. He just couldn't get it done at UVA. They haven't done anything since Jeff Jones left. But if Coach Gillen had the players Jeff Jones had (i.e. Jamal Robinson, Courtney Alexander, Junior Burroughs, Cory Alexander, Curtis Staples, Jason Williford, Norman Nolan etc... He would have done better than Jeff Jones.

Look at you dropping UT in with UNC & Duke as perfect situations, GOAT. I'm feeling a triple national title coming on ... football, mens hoops & baseball (oh yeah, womens hoops has a legitimate shot as well).
When Barnes went to Austin, people thought he was crazy going to a football school. I guess when you keep the quality Texas talent in-state, you can do all right. Hook Em.
