Larry Blair was Liberty University's top scorer last season, averaging 16.6 points per game as a sophomore. He led the Flames in 3-point shooting at 35.3 percent. The 6-foot-1 guard was the team's third leading rebounder.
Nice numbers, LU coach Randy Dunton says. But as a junior, Blair will have to be better since the Flames are welcoming many newcomers in 2005-06.
Dunton specified two areas where Blair needed to show improvement: his defense and movement away from the basketball.
"He's got to lock his mind onto that," Dunton said of Blair's defensive ability. "Athletically and physically, he's capable of doing it."
Blair said he spent the summer working on defensive drills, using a jump rope to get quicker and working on his lateral movement.
"I've got a determination to get better at it," Blair said.
Blair knows heading into this season that he'll be the main target on opponents' scouting reports. That means he'll face lot of double teams, so finding ways to cut better away from the ball to get open will be key.
"He needs to make himself more difficult to defend," Dunton said.
New look?
There was a 6-foot-8 post player working out in the Schilling Center at LU Wednesday.
Too bad she's used up her eligibility.
Katie Feenstra is back on campus to finish her course work after her rookie season in the WNBA. While the Flames figure to have some sort of Feenstra hangover after last year's Sweet 16 appearance, LU coach Carey Green is prepared to move on without her.
The tallest player on this year's LU roster is 6-5 forward Egel Smigelskaite. So instead of pounding the ball inside to the post all night, Green envisions his team, led by preseason All-Big South sophomore point guard Allyson Fasnacht, to be more of an up-tempo bunch.
"I think we're better suited for that," Green said.
Baker watch
LU freshman forward Tyler Baker has ligament problems in his left ankle. He received a cortisone shot to ease the pain last week, and if the swelling doesn't go down in the next three weeks, the 6-8 forward from Albuquerque may be forced to redshirt.
If that's the case, it'll be another hit to LU's frontcourt depth. The Flames lost forward Rashad Robinson late in the summer when he left the program.
