Looks like we got left out...
[glow=red,2,300]Three Big South Teams To Participate in ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday[/glow]
Release: 09/15/2005
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference will be among 18 conferences eligible to participate in the fourth annual ESPN Bracket Buster Saturday one-day men’s college basketball event in mid-February, with League members Winthrop, High Point and UNC Asheville among the field of 100 teams scheduled to compete for one of the 11 Bracket Buster Saturday nationally-televised games, it was announced today by ESPN. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, and marks the Big South’s first-ever involvement in the series.
“To be affiliated with such a nationally-respected event such as the Bracket Buster Saturday is truly an honor,” said Big South Conference Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. “Our participation is also a reflection of the outstanding basketball played in the Big South, and is a tribute to the student-athletes and coaches.”
Winthrop will serve as a host team at Winthrop Coliseum, while High Point and UNC Asheville will play road contests. The 11 televised match-ups from the pool of 100 teams will be determined by ESPN in conjunction with the leagues and will be announced January 29. The remaining teams not selected to appear on television will be paired for games on Saturday, Feb. 18. Each team that hosts a Bracket Buster game must schedule a return date for next year with their opponent.
“We appreciate the opportunity to be included in the 2006 Bracket Buster,” said Winthrop head coach Gregg Marshall. “As a program, we are constantly striving for newer and greater challenges and the opportunity to play another very solid mid-major program late in the year will provide us that challenge. Scheduling can often be cumbersome, if not difficult. Having a home series with a quality opponent is helpful in that regard especially when there is potential for national television exposure.”
“We are obviously thrilled and honored to be one of the teams selected to be included in the 2006 ESPN Bracket Buster Saturday pool,” added High Point head coach Bart Lundy. “We are looking forward to being a part of this exciting nationally-televised event and representing not only High Point University but also the Big South Conference. This is a tremendous opportunity for our players and this basketball program.”
“We’re very excited about being invited to the Bracket Buster Saturday tournament,” commented UNC Asheville head coach Eddie Biedenbach. “This is a great opportunity for our program to get some national recognition.”
Bracket Buster Saturday was created in 2003 and has grown year-to-year, from 18 teams in year one, to 46 teams in the second year and 64 teams in 2005.

I'm curious to know how the teams got chosen...was it the conference's choice? was it ESPN's choice? Winthrop's no surprise, and UNCA should have a good squad and were recently in the NCAAs, but High Point?

My thoughts exactly...us or Birmingham-Southern would've made more sense than High Point.

Even Coastal wouldn't have surprised me, given the Buzz Peterson hiring...but I can't figure out what High Point brings to the table, other than purple uniforms.

ESPN didn't pick LU because the network didn't want sideline shots of a coach stalking around with his tie down around his waist and his shirt tail hanging out.

Now that's funny....when he comes to the Winthrop Coliseum, I always get on him about his untucked shirt...

haha, yeah, Dunton's definitely the slob of the league. He looks like he's about to pass out half the time too, sweating and no voice.

Does that make "Heavy D" a S.O.BS. (Slob Of the BigSouth)? ;D Surprised that a Christian University like Liberty would have such a mess on the sidelines as its Head Coach. Go Flames - Beat Lynchburg College.

Some of you guys ought to get a first hand look at all the positive in the program under Dunton's leadership. The structure and staff have never been stronger, the best recruits in the programs history are on campus this weekend. Transition to big time college athletics takes time and persistence. I have witnessed firsthand Dunton's passion and ability. He has attracted GREAT hires on staff. The critical and faint of heart are no longer in the picture. I predict tremendous results in the next three years. His dedication to the university and the cause of Christ will pave the way to heights the Flames have never reached.

Well, well, well - a voice crying in the wilderness, telling it like it is. How these losers that couldn't carry Dunton's lunchbox (too heavy for them, they will say - ha -ha) get on board and call him an SOB (better not run into Marice, she'll beat your brains out, despite her age) is almost beyond me, but not quite, since I realize how low human nature in the flesh can stoop. Thanks for putting it out there, littlepeople. The only qualification I will add is this: this a great staff, but I hope we can stay that without it being interpreted as a knock on the departed staff members, who we also hold in high regard.

No knock on the previous staff....much was accomplished under their tenure. I know that Coach Dunton speaks very positive of them. But opportunity provided a chance to enhance the program and I give Coach credit for being willing to hire strong experienced people. Dikta and Buddy Ryan didn't always see eye to eye. Understand Division I competition brings egos and pride out in people. It is encouraging to hear the positives that Thom Park and Bob Good are saying about Coach fromtheir vantage point. Politics are a funny animal as people manipulate an angle. I'm embarrassed by some of the comments of others. I do believe that God's hand is on Coach Dunton and his family. Their are many who are believers and we will celebrate together AGAIN soon.

How these losers that couldn't carry Dunton's lunchbox ... get on board and call him an SOB ... is almost beyond me, but not quite, since I realize how low human nature in the flesh can stoop. Dude- you need to chill out a little. Guys love talking trash about sports- no one's going to hell over this, and I FIRMLY believe the good Lord is NOT about to strike us down for being passionate about our teams. No one has said (to my knowlege) that Coach Dunton is SINNING and UNREPENTANT or a NON-BELIEVER. We are unhappy w/ LOSING all the time and hashing over variousideas as to what can be done- 'cause we are sports fanatics! Lighten up! Just because people are born again doesn't mean we want to be the world's DOORMAT. You can quote all the bible verses you want to suggest we should all be quiet and love each other, but there are just as many telling Christians to BE THE BEST at EVERYTHING WE DO. I think your personal ties to this coach blind you a bit, just like someone else on here got mad when we called out his friend- a certain equipment manager- for ignoring a request from an alum. I'm DONE here.

Most of us on this board are actually supportive of Dunton. There are also some who think the jury is still out, and I would say the smallest number are those upset with him. Like I said, I think LU has a shot this year to beat UVA again in men's basketball.

Dear PAmedic, I like having you as a friend on this board. I'm not sure what "I'm DONE here" means, but I hope it doesn't mean you're done with me. Yes, I have quoted a few Bible verses, but I don't mean to use them in a way to indicate people aren't saved, nor do I wish to limit your passion, or anyone else's. I understand that in America, we have every right to our opinion. People can call Randy an SOB and dress that term up a little bit, and they have that right. I would suppose that I would be able to state my opinion in return as well. They have attacked his character, and I have defended it. I really don't think I have been any more pointed in his defense than they have in their attacks. If I have been too harsh, I apologize. As I have said, I love this board. In the course of my life, I have been often criticized for being too competitive. I'm probably more like you than you realize. I want the best for Liberty Athletics. Maybe my ties to coach do blind me a bit. I think he's fantastic. Would it help if I admitted this every once-in-a-while? (I know nothing about the equipment manager issue.)
I don't know if you're in the mood for humor, but I'll cite a Los Angeles Man (Rodney King) "can't we all just get along?" Hopefully taken in good taste and with the spirit of comardery.
God bless,
grm

One little joke about the coach's sideline appearance and everyone goes crazy. Suddenly we are all unsaved and going to hell. I'm sure Coach Dunton is a model person that all of us should emulate in every way...but it is funny to see a division one coach walking around the sidelines with his clothes half off by the end of a game.

I just re-read my posting to see exactly where I said certain were unsaved and going to Hell. I didn't mean that, and really didn't say that, theologically speaking, which is the only way any of us are speaking in this particular context. I do think some are better at dishing it out than they are taking it, but that's o.k.. I certainly don't want animosity between members of this board, and am not trying to create it or provoke it. (I still like Dunton, if it's O.K. for me to state that)
