Greetings, fans of Liberty. Can you tell me what happened with Norman Simmons? Where did he end up? Thanks in advance.

Why does everyone seem to like that guy. He was one of the most annoying people I've ever been around, not to mention he was one of the worst basketball players that Mel brought in. I'm sorry Dunton had to put up with him for a year.

Last I Heard Norm was in texas somewhere, and rumor also has it that there is a warrant out for his arrest in VA for being apart of stealing electronic equip. around campus, and we are not talking just 1 or 2 things..

I thought that was why he got kicked out of school. Stealing laptops.

Does Blinn (TX) Junior College ring a bell?
Have you heard anything about him going to play at LA City College as well? Or signing with Howard? Or signing with Howard, then having his LOI tossed into the shredder?
I ask because it's my understanding that my alma mater (which for now will remain nameless) might be bringing him in, based on all of the above.
Thanks to all. Please keep the info coming.

hahahaha good ole norman simmons, definitly wasnt the brightest tool in the bunch. I dont wanna spread any stories on here so im gonna keep things short and sweet, but things got pretty serious with the laptop stealing. supposdly the school and police used a set up operation involving another former player and his girlfriend. anyhow Norman went to jail and still claiming to Dunton he didnt do anything being taken away in handcuffs

Pretty much all of the above is true from what I hear about Norman. Everyone who played with him or was around him never talks about his basketball skills...any of them. He did construct his own fan club, and deemed himself "Chosen", and last i heard .... "He is doing big things" or as he always liked to say. I agree, you can be the worst program in the nation, and still find someone better than Norman.

Ohh i agree, when i say "he's my boy" I really shouldnt have...I was responsible for showing him around in the summer before everyone came back to school...he's a handful and not worth the troubles

Thank you all for your honest commentary.
I did receive some confirmation re the rumor of him signing with Howard, and now he's not going there because the coach got canned. I would guess that academics could be an issue as well.
He might now end up at my alma mater, Iona. Under Iona coach Jeff Ruland, our admissions and recruiting practices have obviously hit rock bottom. Ruland has give some real rocket scientists "second chances" in the past, most recently former Syracuse guard DeShaun Wililams. He became known as "DeChuck" due to his penchant to stray from the system and just launch up a pathetic shot from anywhere. He also took on the nickname of "DeCancer" for his ability to totally disrupt team chemistry. DeShaun played about 20 games for us last year before getting kicked out of school for academic reasons; Iona went on to go 11-17. Thanks for the memories, DeChuck/DeCancer.
Anyway, Ruland never learns from mistakes and it now appears he's giving Simmons a chance to screw up the 05-06 team, which is considered to be the MAAC favorite along with Manhattan next season. Why do I get the feeling that if we add Simmons, we'll finish mid-pack in the conference?
Again, thanks for your comments. Keep them coming.

GuyF,
when did you graduate from Iona? The first guy ever to go division1 from my high school to went there. His name was Chip Langdon. He played at Iona from 85-89 and he of course was from Philly like me. Do you know him or remember him?

I graduated in '91, so Langdon was there for part of my time there. Chip was a very solid player, a stat sheet filler. Nice outside shot, good defender. Unfortunately he never got to play for an NCAA team.

Chip was recruited by Pat Kennedy but I think he left for Florida St. before Chip Graduated. Quick Chip Langdon story: We played in Tenn Temple's invitational in Chatanooga and he forgot his white jersey. He refused to play in the torn up old emergency jersey and he played like 1 minute and sat the rest. We won on a buzzer beater. Game 2 he played because we wore gold and he scored 27 points 8 blocks 4 steals etc. but he broke his ankle and was out (Next to last game of the season thank God). Meanwhile a soph named Tim Scarborough played solid off the bench scoring 15, 17 and in the Championship game vs the host Tenn Temple high, had 19 at half and 27 for the game despite a box and 1 defense being deployed. We won the tournament but guess who got MVP? Yep Danny Gathings! No really, Chip did. I got 1st team all tournament though. He should have driven the 3 miles to my house and presented the trophy to me. He might have made All-American humanitarian or whatever Gathings got last summer for presenting Blair his trophy. Way off topic I know but I like to share "old hag" stories with the kids.

All the bad things about norman simmons are true, but I can say this. That boy could play defense.
If your coach can keep him in line, he might be worth having on the team. Put him in for a strategic minute here and there.

What? All he would do is crouch down, put his palms out and flail his arms around. He looked like a crab sidwalking all over the place. People would drive right by him all day. The only compliment I can give him is he is athletic. But so are a lot of people.
If it's no obvious by now, I thought that kid was an embarassment to the program.

Norman Simmons was not a Mel Hankinson recruit, Dunton brought him in from Mount Zion after the 2001-2002 season. With all the things said Norm was a funny guy yeah he got into some trouble but overall he was a pretty good guy. He left LU and went to Blinn College in Tx. Oh, and he was not a good defensive player he was just very aggressive.

Wanted to update you guys: Norman Simmons has indeed committed to Iona.
Thankfully, we're somewhat deep, so he likely won't see a ton of time for us.
Now that he's a Gael, laptop thefts aside, what can you tell me about him as a player? There's a debate earlier in this thread re his defensive prowess. How about his offensive skills? What does he do well? Just trying to find a positive about taking in this kid.

Guyf, He's an athletic guy that plays really hard. He can't shoot it very well, but he attacks the glass and will play defense (not a great defender but solid). Can put it on the floor so so. Overall I think he can help the team with his energy off the bench. With all things said, when we use to talk the kid just wants to play ball.

Hello , first I would like to thank everyone for their opinion of a 18 year kid . Secondly I read every single one of these post and they are say the less evil considering not one of you befriended me to to even know who I was as a person yet you have all these really bad things to say about me . Odd because the one person who said he " knew me" showed me around campus said the weirdest thing in the world " he's not that bright " lol guess he didn't check my 1480 SAT SCORE 😎 Well. I want to speak on myself if anyone doesn't mine , so yes I went to jail for having a hand in the criminal laptop thing , although I never personally stole one . Also , I'm a very very wealthy man to this day because one thing you guys didn't know was that I'm probably the innovative person you knew ! If you would have taken that chance to know me ! So I'm sure to this day all of have used products I've created or apps I've created ! Your welcome ! I was young and from nyc where we hustle evetyday and chose a all white religious school that was ran like a cult ! Excuse me if it was rough for me my first d**n year ! But do t judge me until you judge yourself ! Unlike most of you I didn't spend the rest of my life judging people and making blog pages I prepared for the future and learn how to become one of the youngest BLACK MEN IN THE WORLD ! To own mega companies and sell on the stock market ! I read this post for almost 7 years before replying . It was motivation for the haters ! Next time you guys see s young man who's confused or lost instead of going behind his back and talking down on him like a dog try saying HI my name is ...... And maybe u gain a friend you can help grow ! I'm a rose from concrete ! Idk what you guys doing or who you are or what you look like ... But where I'm from ..... IM A LEGEND ! Thank you God bless you all and keep working towards your dreams ! Never know you could be like that blk kid who stole laptops to pay his grandma cancer bills 🏆😎
