Since GRM made mention of it in the other discussion, I thought I'd go ahead and give Ricky Jackson his own thread. Apparently, we are trying to land this kid from Canton, Ohio. He's the one blocking the shot in this pic from back in February: Ricky Jackson6' 6" 200 lb Wing/Power Forward Canton (OH) McKinley H.S. Here's another pic of the kid: Most of the listings online of his schools of interest don't include us. But that's cool as long as he is interacting with our staff.

Interesting information SLY. Sounds like a great prospect. This team needs all of the help they need in terms of rebounding. Hopefully he will sign with us.

Word is that we have a verbal commitment as of today. That endowment is an exciting possibility as well. Both of these could be big.

Well, the school isn't allowed to comment on verbal commitments, so in this case, they couldn't announce until he signs, which probably would be in November...

Actually PAmedic, that is pretty accurate. The official site can't talk about verbal commitments under NCAA guidelines. They can only report when a player has signed his letter of intent. And the fall signing period is later on.
I'll see if I can find any confirmation of the commitment. The kid certainly has won wherever he has played.

yeah- it was sorta tongue in cheek but I know ya NEVER hear the official account of these deals until well after the fact. Wasn't sure if that was a NCAA thing or what. ESPN ran a story the other nite about a HS jr who has recieved numerous recruitment LETTERS from majors, clearly a violation, as they were unsolicited. I'm sure nothing will come of it.

Actually, schools can send letters to any underclassmen (freshmen on up). They just can't have direct contact (i.e. phone cals or in-person) until players finish their junior year. Of course if a school has a coach hanging out in a coach's office of a high school where a prospect happens to go to school, any contact is considered incidental. And let's not even get started about live & dead periods. It gets EXTREMELY complicated.

Some of the things being said on the hoop sites are reassuring ...."How about Liberty getting Ricky Jackson from Canton-McKinley ... potential to to be the best ever at Liberty..." "dramatically improves Liberty" "in position to challenge Big South..." "One inside man away from being among best .... mid-major" o.k, these are fragmented, and not in the best context, but they still point out that the big boys are taking notice. Praise the LORD

The only place I've seen this pinned down is on Hoopmaster.com. I'm going to try to get in touch with his coach early next week and try to confirm the commitment.

Most of the sites with info are pay sites. If Chris can get a hold of Ricky or his coach, it would not only give us confirmation but also give us some insight into his decision.
By all acounts, his stock was actually rising this summer and he had some majors showing some interest based on what he might do in his senior season.

Why are we so interested in getting confirmation about something I already told you? boo-hoo, boo-hoo. Actually, the more the better - but I won't say something if I don't know it to be true. Now my high opinions about certain people - well, those might be a bit subjective, but they're based on fact. Ricky's grandmother et al were high on Liberty University as presented by "he who doesn't know how to recruit at this level." She wanted her (sic) son to have positive role models (looking across the table at Alexis and Zach) and she was impressed to meet the "Good Rev." There are many Christian people out there who see the Liberty Basketball program as a program with Christian character, one with a great facility, and one where their offspring can grow spiritually and still compete at a very high level.
I still say, good days are close at hand.
Much love to Moderator Sly. {I'm still klicking my heels over being on board, and I won't talk like a cow--- (won't say the word) in deference to your NFL team loyalty}

Don't take anything personally as far as confirmation is concerned, GRM. Its just how the process works.
As for my NFL allegiances, I grew up a Bengal fan in Southern Ohio and maintained those loyalties through thick & thin (primarily thin over the past 15 years). Finally I decided to get a fresh start when the Texans began their existence a few years back. I couldn't take watching the Brown brothers destroy what was once a terrific franchise (2 Super Bowls). Their daddy Paul Brown would wring their necks to see what has become of his baby.

Yeah Sly, I'm just shooting my mouth off to be a part of the whole thing. I love it all. My son put my profile on, and he has me two years older than I am, but I remember the old Dallas Texans in the AFL. They got to the championship game, and the game went into overtime. For the overtime flip, the captain (Abner Haynes, if memory serves me right) was told to receive if he won the toss, and to defend this goal if he lost the toss. As the story goes, he won the toss and chose to defend, and of course, the other guys chose to receive. Somewhere along the way, everything turned out well, as the other guys missed a field goal, and then the Texans made one. Great game for me to watch on the old black & white tube - the year would have been somewhere around 1960.

My dad was a Texans fan back in the day when the Hunt Brothers had them as the tiffany franchise of the fledgling league. Most in Dallas looked down on the Cowboys as a Johnny Come Lately when they began. But after the Hunts moved the Texans to KC, the Cowboys were embraced. Former Longhorn Tom Landry took it from there. I grew up a Stars & Stripes fan ... my Dad's Cowboys and my Bengals. But the moment Jerry Jones bought the franchise, that ended in an instant.

I think one of Ricky's questions concerned the old AFL. I guess somebody told him Abner Haynes was on staff as a special consultant for coin flips.

Thanks for the links, WEF.
Its not too good to be true. We should be pulling in these types of athletes on a regular basis. Our Christian distinction is what makes us stand out among colleges. Clearly that is what sold Ricky & his family on coming to Lynchburg. Let's hope his commitment helps us attract other quality prosopects.
