August 18, 2005 · Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University head men’s basketball coach Randy Dunton has announced the signing of Jeremy Eck and Eric Bigby to national letters of intent for the 2005-06 season, with both student-athletes transferring to Liberty from Allegany College in Cumberland, Md.
Eck is a 6-9, 235 lb. center from Stafford, Va., who averaged 5.0 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per contest last year for Allegany, while shooting 57.0 percent. Eck graduated from Allegany with honors and led the men’s basketball program with a 315 lb. bench press.
“Jeremy plays with great passion and enthusiasm,” stated Dunton. “His tenacious effort will be a valuable contribution to our post play and rebounding.”
He played his junior and senior seasons of prep basketball at McPerry High School in Iwakuni, Japan, and finished his senior season averaging 27.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, where the Far East MVP finished with three 50+ plus point contests.
“The opportunity to play Division I basketball, pursue my education and do it with one of my former Alleghany teammates were some big keys in my decision,” added Eck.
Bigby is a 6-6, 190 lb. forward from Meade, Md., who averaged 8.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per contest, while shooting 55.0 percent from the field and 67.0 percent from the line for Allegany and helped the Trojans’ to a 22-8 overall record and to the semifinals of the NJCAA District III Tournament.
“Eric is a tremendous athlete,” remarked Dunton. “We believe Eric has the opportunity to follow the success of Gabe Martin and Leo Lightbourne at the forward position.”
Bigby graduated from Meade Senior High School where he averaged 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest as a senior, while earning first-team all-conference honors as he averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a junior at Fort Knox Senior High School in Fort Knox, Ky., as a junior.
