from the lynchburg fishwrap. here's a wild idea, maybe since they are going to start boarding students, they can start post grad hoops and football, and then we could attract some better quality players. any thoughts?
Falwell changes 'L' in LCA from Lynchburg to Liberty Ron Brown rbrown@newsadvance.com Sunday, August 14, 2005
Lynchburg Christian Academy has been renamed Liberty Christian Academy in keeping with the Rev. Jerry Falwell’s plan to put a seamless Christian school system on a single campus.
LCA is scheduled to begin classes Sept. 6 in a brand new facility carved out of the revamped Ericsson electronics plant, which is now part of Liberty University’s campus.
“Many years ago, our vision was to develop a school system where a Christian young person could enter preschool and continue through the same school system all the way to a Ph.D. without ever sitting under a teacher who was not a born-again Christian,” Falwell said in a letter to LCA parents. “Well, that dream is a reality. Just as we changed the name of Lynchburg Baptist College to Liberty University many years ago, we are now completing the dream with this name change.”
LCA’s enrollment for the coming year is expected to top 1,050 in grades kindergarten through 12.
That’s up from about 900 students last year.
Under Falwell’s educational plan, students who complete four years of high school at LCA can attend Liberty University tuition free.
LCA costs about $4,000 per year per child.
Falwell’s enrollment goal for LCA is 2,000 students, including the addition of full-time boarding students. Discussions are under way about building an LCA-only dorm on LU’s 4,627-acre campus.
Falwell said placing both schools on one campus will enhance the educational experiences of both.
LCA students can take advantage of LU’s library by using a fiber optic network that integrates the entire campus.
Likewise, LU students can serve teaching internships in LCA classrooms or get college credit for helping with LCA’s athletic programs.
LCA and LU also will share in the expense of some core services, such as security, maintenance, custodians, central purchasing and food preparation.
The campus will include a new early learning center that will serve as a feeder system for the new LCA.
This summer, officials from both LCA and LU worked together to make operations blend.
“The reason we put together the committee was to minimize duplication of services,” said Jerry Falwell Jr., LU’s vice chancellor.
Both schools had already saved on construction costs after the 888,000-square-foot Ericsson building was donated to Jerry Falwell Ministries by Hobby Lobby, an Oklahoma City crafts company.
Revamping the building cost between $45 and $50 per square foot, compared to an estimated $120 per square foot for new construction.
Next year, Thomas Road Baptist Church will move to the campus in a building being built adjacent to the former Ericsson building.
Classrooms in the new LCA will pull double duty as school classrooms during the week and classrooms for Sunday school on weekends.

Boarding school is all well and good but to me this "seamless" school system somewhat delegitmizes LU, at least in my eyes. Not academically or anything, it just looks to me less like a "real" university and more like a K-16 school. Who's ever heard of such a thing?

call it what you like, IMHO its creating a "seamless" mentality where no one questions anything and just does what the nice people at church, school and college (all the same people) tell you to do. Oh, and vote Republican!
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are advantages (4 yrs FREE at LU for starters) but sometimes a kid has to see the world for him/herself to grow up. I didn't- soon enough anyway- and it screwed me up for a while (some might say to this day!)

Bigsmooth -- I'm with you on the concept. But frankly, its sopmething they should've done ten years ago when it could've paid big dividends. But it could still work now.

Yeah I think that this is funny, I graduated there in 2003. I do there football games on the radio and still don't see the point of trying to make it a Junior Liberty University. O well, I was in the school today in it is going to look pretty good.

i feel it is a great opportunity to really make recruiting inroads. and possibly get heads up on other schools and be a real force. the seamless education thing....well i think JF is just happy to be fulfilling his wish on having a full educational system on one big campus. the free LU education is great too. i do nto think it would be an issue of brainwashing either. i think LU has progressed enough that they promote free thinking, but just giving students that biblical base. i just feel there is a great ministry here, avenues we have not touched before and it could also enhance athletics which in itself is a mission field!

Oh, and vote Republican! If you think the mentality among LCA and LU students is seamless, try reading some of their online journals. They tell a different story. Additionally, IMHO it's the school's job to educate. It's a parent's job to make sure their children are well-balanced. Unfortunately, I think there are some less than balanced parents out there.

I'm trying to become more balanced, ElScorcho. My two childr. will certainly benefit as I become more self-assured and less some other things.... One of the "other things" is being particular about details. Interacting online has helped a little with not having to put every jot and tiddle (sp.?) in place. Nevertheless, I have to point out that givemethemic should've used "their" instead of "there." on the general board where a discussion abt. grammar arose, someone used "its"- possessive pronoun instead of "it's"- contraction. In closing (I should be sleeping), the sports info. was interesting. You'd string me up if you knew how many games I went to. One year I had roommates really into football.... I have since gained a little more interest, though I,ve always prefered PLAYING, mainly on my own after high school(shooting hoops). The hockey game I attended was enjoyable, but the company was strange and my roomies helped bail me out! Good night.

I pray to god that you are joking about grammar on a message board, right? None the less, don't get me wrong I like LCA and I like LU, I just think that kids need to be able to make there own decsions and figure out what they believe, not just because (Mommy and Daddy) said so. I can't tell you how many people I know that could careless about the religon taught at LU because they had it shoved down there throats their entire life and where not able to explore other options on their own. But like I said, I have no problems with LCA or LU.

Gotta admit, that woulda been me in the late eighties. Thats how some of us learn though, I have a radically different outlook on life now, but I definitely will NOT raise my children as I was. Live and learn.

]None the less, don't get me wrong I like LCA and I like LU, I just think that kids need to be able to make there own decsions and figure out what they believe, not just because (Mommy and Daddy) said so. Again, it seems to be an issue with parents, not the schools. I personally came to LU to get away from public schools and everything associated with them. I had seen everything else and I was tired of it. I was ready for a place like LU. So, it works both ways. For all the kids at LU who say their parents force them to go there, I wish some of them would realize they're more than capable of taking out student loans and going elsewhere without any help from their parents. I think it often amounts to "I hate it here, but I'm too lazy to do anything about it." LCA is obviously a little different, but one more time, I think its all about the parents being balanced. And oh so many of them aren't these days.

I went to public school as well but where I live now you either send your kids to Central Dauphin with an enrollment of 4000 - or Hershey High with taxes out the ying yang. All of the private school here are catholic and the one protestant school Harrisburg Christian doesn't offer football.
There are a few of us here that would like an option like LCA - even to the point we have started initial discussions about starting a school.

Wow! I did not know all this. Good thing for this board to educate me is such matters and grammar also. My kids are going to private and if LCA was an option they would go there. I am from the real world and would not think of sheltering them, my parent's never did. We all have to make up our minds at some point to follow what we believe and whether it is "forced" down your throat or only heard on Sundays stuff like God's love seems to stick out.

Sorry GIMMIC- I mean giVEmETHEmic...It WAS a joke, trying to let people know me a little abt. me while also pointing out that I could use you're-no, YOUR- help in lightening up (incl. learning to right- no, WRITE- as if I'm speaking). Thanks for the help, feedback, assistance.... So, I guess God answered your prayer. Anyway, I went to a Christian school most of elementary and HS; my cousins helped me in the "wordly-wise" dept. but I still struggled b/c of shyness. In late HS and at LU I learned more while still struggling with issues. After graduating is when rebellion against values kicked in. Having my own car, not having many singles to hang out w/ at my church, feeling temporarily accepted by "wordly" people through my job.... God watched over me and I still "witnessed" while gradually contradicting more and more values in the name of finding balance. Right now my 6th-grader will go into 2nd yr. of home-school; other one is 2yrs. old. Debating what to do for jr and sr high- he wants classrm. but we didn't get involved w/ some of fun stuff.... Considering public sch. for next yr. b/c of opportunities. By the way, I saw how the world could be even in Chr. sch. Also, I dated someone at LU who went on trips w/ LCA kids and said they were sometimes the worst to deal w/ (as opposed to unchurched kids on the busses.

PS. I forgot to mention- the "General" board and "I love sweet Jerry" thread is what started the grammar business. Please keep in mind that I just registered 1.5wks. ago, so I went and read a lot of stuff that is old news to you guys. By the way, I just saw the feature that gives the 10 most recent postings.... Great set-up!
