Well, there was no volleyball thread before...
I don't really know much...Maybe when the 2005 schedule comes out someone can post it.

Some of the schedule for the out of conference portion includes a trip to San Diego State University. This is a tournament that they are playing in. Some of the other teams include UC Riverside, Creighton, Southern Illinois, and San Diego State University. I believe they play in a tournament at UVA. Some other teams are Davidson, JMU, William&Mary, and others that I can't think of at the moment.

we're middle of the pack - and poised to surprise some people (I hope) GO FLAMES! I believe we will surprise some people. I saw a couple of their practices and they have some depth on the right side, middle and outside positions. I think our defense will be an improvement from last season.

Yeah...they've been workin hard...Libero Lara Bartalemo (spelling way off) is one to watch as she's now a sophomore and will be instrumental in a team that lost three valuable seniors in Jennifer Belk (team leader in digs and kills), Becky Rudnick, and Kristin Colson (team leader in assists). Also Tiffany Thoreson has been axed from the team. Another person to watch is Autumn Poorman. Last year we had the nation's 5th toughest schedule, and this year's early season seems to be just as brutal, but Winthrop is not the heavy favorite people make them sound like...they won the conference championship last year after coming one point away from losing to us in the semis and two points from being blanked by Coastal in the championship...should be interesting.

Hopefully there will be a new champion this season. And that would be us hopefully. Good points Atrain. BTW Atrain the correct spelling in case for future references is Bartolomeo. Plus Winthrop lost their star middle blocker for the season due to a tear in her ACL. Her name is Shannon Sitzmann. She was only a freshman but she was their star at middle. www.winthropeagles.com/default.asp?section=18&type=story&id=2354

Yeah saw Autumn and Allie today...asked if they were gonna beat Winthrop they were like "Heck yeah"-clearly they are going to go at the Eagles this year. And to quote Allie "October 1st at 2 and you WILL come with your flag". *sigh*-if only I could find that ghetto flag I made (I took a blue towel and used red duct tape to spell "LU" on it and attatched it to a wooden stick...towels are not the thing to use for flags).

Yeah, losing Sitzmann will hurt the Eagles, but they still have the player of the year (Mary Hock) returning, along with 2 2nd-teamers (Emily Heckl, Taryn Surbaugh), so there is still plenty of talent in Rock Hill. I think WU, Coastal, and Birmingham-Southern are all going to be strong and LU has a good chance to be in the mix too (though I think they are a step behind the other three at this point).

WEF your team should have plenty of talent to fill in that void left by her absence on the court. Can't wait to see what your team will bring to the table this season. Hock kicked our tails last season from the outside. Hopefully from a fan standpoint that our defense will limit her. I guess we will see what happens. The thing that hurt us last season was our defense and a lack of depth. But we are coming around.

I don't see LU as a step behind Birmingham-Southern, we did beat them on their home court last year (granted they beat us in the Vines too)-and I definitely don't see how UNCA is ranked ahead of us...but Coastal and Winthrop are definitely the teams to beat this year...and I WILL (according to Allie-I have no choice now, lest I face her wrath, which is a fate FAR worse than death, plus the wrath of Kristin, Janel, Autumn, Tiffany, etc. etc. etc...) be there.
PAMed-what education? College is great when you cut out that part, except we have these stupid attendance policies so I have to go to class just to take a nap.

The main reason I put BSC ahead of you guys for now is that they return all of their all-conference players while you guys have to replace Belk (not to say you won't be as good or better than last year, but as an outsider, it is hard for me to know that)...

We like the challenge of being picked fifth. That I think, is going to motivate our team to finish even higher. It happened last year and we went on the road to UNC Asheville in the first round of the BSC tournament and beat them in 3 sets. I really wasn't impressed with their team from last season in the first place. I get your point WEF about you putting LU behind BSC. ATrain we haven't won at BSC since 2002 but we manage to beat them everytime they come to the Vines Center.

Well, if your volleyball girls look like most school's volleyball girls, you need big color photos...
But seriously, as someone who follows college volleyball (well, at least Winthrop volleyball) pretty seriously (it's right up there w/ men's basketball and baseball for me, even before Winthrop was good), any coverage is good coverage for the sport.

Yeah, your basketball team wasn't too shabby, but in general, most schools' volleyball teams are much better than basketball...

Here it is, the volleyball preview written by yours truly, and my journalistic debut in the Liberty fishwrap coming out August 30...Chris Lang, Eat Your Heart Out After beginning last season ice cold, the Liberty Lady Flames volleyball team turned red hot, winning ten of their last thirteen matches, including a 3-1 win over Atlantic Coast Conference foe NC State and coming one point away from defeating conference champion Winthrop in the Big South tournament semi-finals. This year, they hope to continue bringing the heat in a daunting schedule that head Coach Shane Pinder deems “challenging”. The Lady Flames will open their season September 2nd on the West Coast, playing in the San Diego State tournament featuring host San Diego State, Creighton, University of California-Riverside, and Southern Illinois. The team will then fly back to the East Coast to play in the William and Mary Invitational, with host William and Mary, former conference rival Elon, Binghamton, and St. John’s. The following weekend, the Lady Flames will travel an hour north to Charlottesville to play in the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament with Albany, Appalachian State and in-state rival The University of Virginia. Liberty will play its first home game on September 20 against the Dukes of James Madison University. Other out-of-conference opponents include visits to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Charlotte from the Atlantic 10 and a visit from the Spartans of UNC-Greensboro on November 8th. The tough non-conference schedule will prepare the team for Big South Conference play, which begins September 23 against Radford. The Lady Flames, picked to finish fifth in the conference this year, find themselves chasing Big South Conference favorite Winthrop. The Lady Eagles have won each of the last three league tournament championships. Coastal Carolina, Birmingham-Southern, and UNC Asheville were also picked to finish ahead of the Lady Flames. Despite the middle-of-the-road ranking, the team remains optimistic about conference play this year. “I’m excited, we’re ranked fifth which is the best place to be as we have a lot of potential to come from behind” stated senior Janell Migeot, who will be looked at to lead the team’s offense, while senior Allison Hallock will anchor the defense. The effort to bring home Liberty’s first conference title since 2001 will also be aided by a sizeable recruiting class. Coming in are two freshmen with heights of 6’0” and 6’2” to replace last year’s graduated seniors Jennifer Belk and Becky Rudnick at outside hitter and middle blocker, while Laura Bartolomeo takes over Kristin Colson’s role as setter. “We’re a young team, and it will take a special effort” to knock off Winthrop, stated Coach Pinder. “We’ve got a job to do this year” he said, and with a challenging out of conference schedule, two seniors anchoring both the offense and defense, and a recruiting class with size, there is a great chance that the job will get done, and hopefully add another championship volleyball banner in the Vines Center.

Here's the next article coming to The Champion on Tuesday:
The young Lady Flames volleyball team has gotten off to a rough start this season, getting blanked by the San Diego State Aztecs and Creighton Bluejays on Friday at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State University. In their first match of the season against San Diego State, the Lady Flames played the Aztecs tough in game one, before dropping it 30-26. In game two, the Aztecs and Flames were knotted at two apiece until an 18-6 run put the Aztecs up 20-8 and from there they cruised to a 30-15 win. Game three saw the Lady Flames down but not out, as they fought hard early on, with an ace by Autumn Poorman bringing them within one point at 7-6. However, the Aztecs continued to fight fire with fire and won game three 30-18, giving them the match. “We passed the ball well and served well, which kept them out of their offensive system in game one, but our youth showed up in the second and third game as we couldn’t get into our system and we became very predictable.” stated head coach Shane Pinder on Libertyflames.com. For the match, sophomore Lara Bartolomeo proved that she was capable of stepping up and taking over the setter position left open by Kristin Colson, as she recorded 19 assists and six digs. Sophomore Jessica Nelson led the offense at outside hitter with eight kills and six digs, and junior Poorman stepped up to replace graduated senior Becky Rudnick at middle blocker as she tallied five block assists. Overall, the team had 14 block assists. “We controlled the net blocking wise,” remarked Pinder on Libertyflames.com. “I was pleased with the way we controlled the net against a big and physical San Diego State team.” Net control proved to be the Lady Flames undoing in their next match later that day against the Creighton University Bluejays, as the team recorded only three blocks for the match. Creighton’s offensive power was shown immediately in game one, as the Bluejays recorded 21 kills to take game one 30-13. The Lady Flames kept it close early on in game two, getting within two points at 10-12, before the Bluejays offense exploded, going on an 18-6 run to close out game two 30-16. In game three, coach Pinder made some adjustments to the game plan and Liberty and Creighton went back-and-forth, exchanging points with Liberty trailing by two at 18-20 until a 10-2 run by the Bluejays sealed the shut-out of the Lady Flames in game three with a score of 30-20. “Creighton was a really physical, fast team who had a great setter. We showed that we were a young team and unlike the first match, we couldn’t block.” coach Pinder stated on Libertyflames.com. Blocking was definitely a problem against Creighton, as the team recorded just three blocks in the match, but the young team did have some bright spots as freshman outside hitter Kendall Nichols stepped up to fill the hole left by graduated senior Jennifer Belk at outside hitter. Nichols accumulated nine kills and six digs to lead the offense, and junior Rachel Denton added seven kills at middle blocker. Bartolomeo proved herself again at setter, accumulating 28 assists. On Saturday, the Lady Flames fell in three tight games to the Salukis of Southern Illinois University. In game one, the Lady Flames jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, capped off by an ace from Bartolomeo. However, the Salukis would not give up easily, and after a tight battle of back-and-forth point exchanging, Southern Illinois took game one from Liberty, 37-35. Games two and three were also tight contests that the Salukis managed to take 30-23 and 30-24, for a 3-0 shutout victory over the Lady Flames. Offensively, Liberty was led by Nichols who had 12 kills and eight digs., while Nelson recorded nine kills and five digs. Bartolomeo, in addition to her service ace, also recorded 35 assists, six digs and two kills. Liberty next plays this Friday against Elon at 9:00AM followed by a 4:30 PM matchup with Binghamton in the William and Mary Invitational. The Lady Flames then face host William and Mary and St. John’s on Saturday.
