Well, LU got like 10 minutes of talk on the beginning of the show and Rocco is going to be on in a little while. There was a bit of an explination of their attitudes towards the school and it's sports program. I'll paraphrase:
First they started out making fun of the fact that we hired a coach before an AD as that's one of the AD's primary functions. Then a debate ensued on whether or not an LU AD is just a figurehead since Jerry is apparently calling all the shots. Then an eyeopening exchange
Rich: "You know where I'm coming from, Liberty for me has always just been ... there. I've never been to a game... I don't plan on going to a game.
Larry: "I've been to a few this year. A couple. Now go ahead, make fun. I hear it all the time. I've "forgotten my roots", where I've "come from". I should "play the company line" sometimes.... I think this is a good hire for them."
Now obviously all of the above was paraphrasing but it just gives you some insight into the minds of some of the local sports media. I don't take offense to Rich making fun of the program as that's all he really adds to the show. I question how much the guy actually knows about sports and I've never heard him do anything but rip on every team/program in sports. Larry, however, knows we want him to talk about it, he just won't.
I'm sure you're all sick of this topic rehashed.

Its a couple of dudes on a small AM radio station. I wouldn't sweat it. Now what goes on at the local TV stations is of greater consequence.

105.9 FM, they are one of the biggest UVA affilaties in the state, they are by far no where near a small station.

Larry sometimes gives LU credit...he tries sometimes...I was actually on the show one year during their sportsline parody contests...won a free X-box game...and my song was actually "clean". (They made fun of me for not mentioning beer).
Rich rips on every single team except North Carolina...so I don't see a real big downside. Most people don't even really listen to that show for sports information...it's sort of like a comedy/sports/reality show.

When I was down in Lynchburg, I never really paid much attention to them for sports info. They just rip on every team.

Ripping on everyone is what all the small market sports talk shows do. It takes zero creativity and hosts believe it juices the phone lines.
Its interesting for about 5 minutes until you realize is that all they have is a contrarian position. Guys like that will never move up the radio food chain.
I did middays for the #1 station in Lynchburg 15-20 years ago and I barely made minimum wage. You can't expect much quality in Lynchburg for what they pay. Every now & then you'll have some decent talent in their first job before they move on to a better situation.
None of that applies to Christian radio which doesn't reward moving up to bigger markets with a few rare exceptions.

You have to admit that some of the "stuff" that goes on in the LU athletic department lends itself to be ripped. LU is lucky to be overshadowed by VA Tech and UVA, or the stuff would get more play in the papers and the radio. The whole "fire Hankinson by leaving a letter on his desk and hire Dunton the next day fiasco; and now the gutting of the athletic department (with no reasons given in some cases) and hiring the football coach before the AD. I, for one, have to agree, and the department will be a mess until/unless and AD is hired that has actual power and legitimate authority, including hiring and firing decisions.

The Mel story is ancient history done by one of those let go "with no reasons given".
Ultimately, practically no AD in the country has the ultimate say in hiring & firing coaches. They are the point person for the decisions, but in the case of football & mens basketball the school president and board of regents/trustees are the ones who really make the call. Now the non-revenue sports are generally all up to the AD. But to assume that LU is different from VT or UVa because an AD isn't hiring autonomously is inaccurate.

You're right, Sly, but typcially the AD is at least in the decision making loop--and that has never been the case at LU. Let's say, for argument's sake, that Park did resign. He was not even in the loop on the staff that got fired. What kind of chain of command is that?

A.G. - I understand where you're coming from re: the A.D.
My boss feels the same way. It should be the other way around. At the same time, if you lose any more recruiting time by waiting for an A.D. hire to happen, it can set you back. Cuts both ways, I guess.

Never heard that letter thing with Mel. If true, it seems out of character since nobody at this school has ever been shy about anything. As for the "no reason given" thing, I could just imagine Mel sitting there at his desk wondering why such a decision was made

On one hand, none of us probably thought toms shoes that Stephen Hawking was born in a wheelchair. But as a pop men toms shoes culture figure, his wheelchair and electronic voice are his thing, and against all logic you find it hard to think of him shoes men toms any other way, like how you can't think of Hulk Hogan without the tan and mustache. That canvas mens toms photo up there is from 1965, when a 23-year-old Hawking married Jane Wilde. That was after his diagnosis with ALS, the disease that would put him in the men size toms shoes wheelchair (note the cane). But just a couple mens toms shoes size of years before that, he had no idea he had a degenerative disease -- he was a healthy, active, drinking college student at Oxford: Then, one day he noticed he was having trouble keeping his womens toms shoes hands steady, and once fell down a flight of stairs. Hey, best to go get it checked out, right? Could be, like, an ear infection or something toms classic shoes throwing off his balance. That's when the 21-year-old (now studying for his Ph.D. at Cambridge) was told he'd be bedridden soon, and dead within a few years, a prognosis that is true for almost every ALS patient. Hawking, somehow, toms shoes classic is still alive 50 years after his diagnosis. Jennell Stehle
