I was reading an article in the New and Daily Advance that was talking about Gene Goodman trying to get an additional year of eligibility as a result of the injury he sustained last year. Does anyone out there know what the rules are about redshirting. I thought that if you played past game 3 then you would loose that option. It would be great to get him back for one more year considering all of the freshmen at that position. He has the potential to get 1000 yards+.

You can ask the NCAA for anything. You just rarely get what you are asking for. Perhaps the suits in Indy will take pity on our plight and give Gene one more season.

That would be a Godsend if Goodman could play for another year. He carried the team when he played last year.

The rules are very complicated in my opinion. I also even though the NCAA is fairly consistent on these thing occasionally they come up with something off the wall in regards to eligibility.
I think exploring Goodman's options is the right move. He would greatly benefit for another year from a pro scouting perspective and LU's ground game would go from questionable to strong just like that.

The NCAA is rarely consistent in these regards. Its bizarre how their rationale fluctuates in these cases. I have witnessed what looked like open & shut cases for an extra year that were denied and seen just as many questionable requests approved.
We obviously have nothing to lose by trying.

but not as many as you seem to think. I can name a few surprises off hand but they receive hundreds of these requests so they would have to be somewhat consistent in there decision making or they would be facing countless suits!

If he could get that eligibility, it would be of great help to our team b/c we could definitely use his experience and talent again.

Does anyone remember the battle to get Glyn Turner another year last year....what was the problem...he played 30 seconds in 1 game therefore they wouldnt grant him that year, but finally they did after a few games into the season....it was a HUGE headache for everyone involved and the NCAA rarely gets things right and it's always on their watch not when you want it done

Then we should start the appeals process now then.

There is no reason to get Eugene another year of eligibility. Not only will it not happen. (he played in too many games, and during the second half of the season, both violate the reasons medical red-shirt appeals).
His attitude sucks, and only brings the team down.

With the way things are run in the football office (athletic department period), I think that it is a slim chance that Gene will get another year. The fact that he played in more than 3 games is also a huge obstacle. But if he did not redshirt a year, it is possible that he can get a medical redshirt credited to his senior season and get to play for a 5th year. The question then is will his total number of games played in 2004 be a factor in the NCAA's decision. What I think should have initially been the best thing for our football program, since Sam, Gene and Dre all came in together and were all excellent backs, at least one of them should have had a redshirt season at some point prior to the 04 season.

I heard that the Big South had approved him getting another year, but no word from the NCAA. Obviously, they'd be a lot more difficult to persuade. I think it's pretty harsh to say he only brings the team down-from the players I've come into contact with-they all want him to come back. I also think that talent-wise, he got the short end of the stick for the past 4 years!! No disrespect to Dre Barnes, but I feel like he was flagged as the "best" out of that group-and although he is a very talented player, it's clear in retrospect that Sam Gado and Eugene are just as talented-if not more. In reference to the comment about one of the players that came in during the same year Dre/Sam/Gene did should have redshirted-I think Marcus Hamilton was redshirted-he was part of that same recruiting class if I remember correctly-and then maybe he was hurt last year? Sam Gado as well as Gene were supposed to be redshirted 2004, but with Dre out with his injury-they all three ended up playing. My feelings were that Dre should have just taken his med. redshirt and gotten to play a full season 2005. I think it was a bad decision both for Dre-he obviously wasn't totally healed from his injury-and also for the team-the only one left now w/any experience is Hamilton and he hasn't really had much playing time himself. I hope Gene does get approved by the NCAA, but I do agree it's unlikely
