Has the spring game already occurred? Just curious because I have seen nothing about it.

I know a VMI alum that played back in the 70's and their alumni participation both physically and financially ranks among the tops in the country. He tells me only Harvard gives more back to their school than VMI. They have a banquet for every 5 year class (5th, 10, 15th anniversary etc.) and they raise big bucks. During homecoming they have a formal meeting where each class gets up and tells how much money they gave that year collectively. Man you would hear some crickets if we did that at Liberty! 4 years ago his class gave 70 million. They have a billionaire in their class and he gave about 55 of the 70 but the other 120 (yes his class was small due to the Vietnam war) gave the rest. Also they encourage all of their alum to get a life insurance policy and name VMI as the benefactor so when they die, the school gets 100 grand or however big your policy is. They don't just give until it hurts, they give until it kills. This is serious stuff for sure so I am not at all surprised by how well VMI's website covers the spring game. It is a major event in Lexington.

You have to be a child with a silver sthingy in your mouth to even be admitted to that toy soldier school. That's why they have such a huge warchest to build that beautiful campus. And yet they still can't field competitive athletic teams.

It is true, they have some seriously well off people from the start but you have to admit that they know how to raise funds. I am surprised that they are not more competitive in sports considering how important it is to them.

VMI's issue in athletics is the whole "marching in line" scenario. You know from being a coach as I was that kids today aren't going to be too crazy on all of the military excercises you have to participate in if you are a VMI student. It takes a certain kid to want that over drinking beer and chasing co-eds. Same can be said for LU - when I was there is was business dress and mandatory chapel. That's not for everyone so your pool of athletes to pick from is going to be cut a bit right there.
So while they have the funds to compete in D-IAA their pool of athletes to pick from is smaller IMO.

HBF you are right. And that is really the most important part, getting real players. It seems that will always be a problem recruiting at VMI. However, military schools can put together some good seasons. Airforce in football, Navy during David Robinson's days, Navy football during Roger Staubach (NO I AM NOT OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE SEEN HIM PLAY AT NAVY). It just seems like the VMI alum expect better teams than what they have had in football and hoops and I don't disagree. Even with the restrictions and smaller talent pool, you can still be more successful than they have been. At least that is what I hear from my alumni buddy.
