Just watching the VT/Miami game, and I noticed a whole lot of guys from VA on the starting offense for VT. Then they got to the defense, and 10 out of 11 guys were from VA and the 11th guy was from DC! I didn't realize that VA was such a hotbed of HS football players as I know TX, FL and NJ are pretty well known for that. Anyway, maybe we should look closer to home. A bunch of guys were from Richmond.

Beamer says that if you give him the top players in VA he'll be able to win every year.

The Northern Region is full of good players and decent teams. Chantilly, Westfield, Centerville, sometimes Fairfax and on occasion TC Williams (Remember the Titans). I used to call high school games on cable access up here. I did games for Mike Ihmo and Eddie Royal when they were in high school. The tide water Virginia beach area is the real area for the players though.

I have lived in Hampton for 3 years and the Tidewater area seems to produce a number of players. The most most famous from this area being Michael Vick and Aaron Brooks. I really think the program could benefit by playing well against teams from this area such as W&M, and Norfolk State plus maybe even scheduling Hampton U. 20+ years ago the players at LU were predominately from FL, GA, and VA.

There's a decent HS team that plays right here on Campus: LCA, now 23-0 over the past 2 years, and a win next Saturday means 2nd consecutive state championship (3rd overall) and 24-0 over 2 seasons.

someone said we don't recruit well outta LCA due to some personality conflict w/ a certain coach. Rumor/conjecture, hopefully that will change next year for obvious reasons.

William Campbell High School has also been high school Class A state champions for the past two years...and they're located an hour away in Brookneal.

We need to start recruiting Tx and Pa more, i know that for a fact...SC and VA kids are ok, but LU could defintely use pastoral staff better

Welcome back, Zack. I trust all is well in the Quaker State. I may be heading up to Kyle Field for T+1. Listening to some of the Aggie alumni, it may be Fran's swan song.
For the record, Winthrop Fan should not be confused with WEF. Not that anyone would believe that WEF would post that kind of lame smack.

We could get a bunch of Girls together at WU and still beat your sorry Football team. I don't doubt that. I've been to Winthrop a couple of times and I've seen the girls there. I saw a couple of the cheerleaders grazing by the soccer field. Seriously, there are tons of girls at WU. There aren't many, but there are tons of them.

Ok old hags get ready to jump me but...
Morgan Hout was the last LU coach to successfully recruit in central Virginia. We need to go out and sign Virginia kids for two reasons:
1. There is plenty of talent in this state for high school football. UVA and VT's football success can be attributed to the fact they built a fence around the state for the top recruits. we need to get in position to grab some of the leftovers and sleepers. Then focus on FL, PA and Texas. End of story.
2. Build local interest in the program. We moan about the fact few in the Lynchburg have taken to the school - let's take a short cut to build interest. Go out and sign about 20 kids within and hour radius. That's a start. Hout signed Paige, Johnson, White, McCray, and a few others all within a two year span. We need to go back to that kind of local focus.

Shhh...
I may throw my name in the hat for the soon to be football opening.
Medic - I am stuck in the 80's - back when I thought LU had a legitimate shot at being a D-IAA football power. If Dr. T or Dr. J can see this message please hear me...no more shortcuts getting a coach for name reasons only! Get the FOC built. Spruce up the stadium a bit. Hire a committee to help with the strategic direction of the football program. Don't hire our next coach in a vaccuum - get input from FOOTBALL people.
The road to success is always under construction - can we please start working on the road?

We need to go back to that kind of local focus. The good thing for your suggestion is that some of the core players coming back for Liberty next year are central Virginia kids. TE Chris Luck is from Liberty High in Bedford WR Brandon Turner is from Gretna DT Kevin Richard is from LCA And Zach Terrell is from Manassas Park, which plays a lot of central Virginia schools come playoff time. A guy to keep an eye on, know that ATrain mentioned William Campbell, is Matt Barbour, a WR/RB/KR/DB for the Generals. The kid is fantastic athlete, but their coach Brad Bradley says he's not getting a lot of college looks because he's too small (about 5-8, 175). He's lightning fast and is a terrific playmaker and would be an excellent fit somewhere in I-AA football.

Chris:
I agree having the local kids coming back is great - but not enough of them in my opinion. Looking at the 1988 media guide (8-3 overall first year of D-1AA full schedule) LU had 36 Virginia kids on the roster. This year was one of the best in LU football history. Virginia kids outside of central VA here's the breakdown:
VA Beach/Richmond/Chesapeake - 13 total SW Virginia - 2 total NOVA - 3 total Shenandoah Valley - 2 total
Central VA kids: LCA - 4 total Rustburg - 3 total Brookville - 2 total GW Danville - 2 total Heritage - 2 total waynesboro - 1 total Fluvanna - 1 total Appomattox - 1 total
I'll take a look at the 97 roster later (9-2 best LU football season ever) and break that down to compare.

2005 we have 15 central VA kids on the roster and 25 overall from VA. The drop off wasn't as significant as I thought.

I had heard that the previous regime (Rutigliano) wasn't interested in recruiting Central Va. kids, so the Central Va. kids in turn weren't interested in looking at LU.
If Karcher's defense, he's at least re-opened that pipeline to some extent.

You heard correctly. Coach Rut didn't take advantage on the strong recruiting relationships the previous regime had started building. LU took a snobbish attitude regarding kids in their own backyard.
I would like to see us get a head coach that has proven he can win as a head coach - not an assistant. if we get a "name" coach that is fine but should not be the primary reason for hire. Then I would like to see the new coach put together a staff with at least one member having some local ties. Then start from scratch and see if we cab build a "fence of pride" for local kids that aren't D-1 prospects. Call it the grand experiment if you will! see if it works - the football program has tried just about everything else!

HF, i agree so, so much. we need to sign state kids first. their is a a lot of talent in the roanoke/lynchburg area that we do not get. these kids are going to the other I-AA schools in virginia. the top kids at these schools are going to VT and UVA, but their ar plenty of kids just below that level that could be a great fit, if they are willing to adhere to LU standards. LU should be a national recruiting school due to the fact that we reach all over the US and the world through christian ministry, but first we must rach the in state kids. it would be great for attendance as well. here is a breakdown of the in state schools with virginia players.
JMU- 59 W&M- 51 RICHMOND- 32 HAMPTON- 24 NORFOLK STATE- 53

WOW - those numbers are staggering! Any coincidence that JMU and W&M have emerged as two of the power programs in 1-AA?
One more thing, good luck this weekend re: VT and UVA. I have no feeling which way this one will go right now. Regardless, you are still my favorite RTP poster!
Wish I was going to be in town. I'd take the Flames Club bus up for the basketball game then drive up from my old stomping grounds for VT-UVA on Saturday. Oh well - the joys of having to work for a living!

VT is a clear favorite, but the hoos are very good at home. UVA is just too thin in the secondary esp. if the suspended players have more than a one game susp. im looking forward to it even though it is a 12 noon game. a lot of people just do not know what a great rivalry this is. i should just sleep in the parking lots since i will be watching the LU/UVA hoops game.

Great points - but after the Miami I'm not so sure just how good VT is and UVA has been tough all year at home. I see a close one regardless.
hey while you're up there - how about bringing home a Flames basketball win!?
