Coastal on the bubble
If Coastal Carolina beats Charleston Southern Saturday to finish 10-1, the Chanticleers will be on the NCAA Division I-AA playoff bubble since the Big South champion doesn't get an automatic bid to the 16-team tournament.
Coaches around the conference have differing opinions on the Chanticleers' playoff chances.
"I've looked at the teams with automatic bids, and I don't see how they couldn't be in," Gardner-Webb coach Steve Patton said on Tuesday's Big South coaches teleconference. "This year, I think for Coastal, they got James Madison at a good time when they were ranked high. It's not like they played them late when they were 4-4 or 5-5 or whatever.
"I think Coastal is in with a win."
Karcher disagrees.
"What their chances are, I have no idea," the LU coach said. "I don't think it's a slam dunk. You just don't know what people are going to look for when they pick these teams. I know a lot of people don't think the Big South is a real tough conference. It's going to be interesting."
Chanticleers coach David Bennett is mum on the subject, instead focusing his thoughts on Saturday's game at CSU.
"Not watching those scoreboards," Bennett said. "We've got to win this football game to win this conference championship. We're putting all our energy into that. We can't control anything else.
"If you don't win this ballgame, then you've wasted a lot of your oxygen."
Coastal fans should keep an eye on four key games Saturday:
If Montana State beats Montana, Eastern Washington will win the Big Sky's automatic bid and Montana will get an at-large. If Montana wins, the Grizzlies will be the only Big Sky playoff team.
If Richmond beats William & Mary at home to finish 8-3, the Spiders will be a near lock for an at-large bid.
If Southern Illinois beats North Dakota State, the Gateway tri-champion Salukis will be a lock at 8-3.
If Nicholls State beats McNeese State, the Colonels will get the Southland's automatic bid. Texas State will have a solid at-large argument at 9-2.
