this time of year finds me at barnes and noble buying all the football magazines i can before i head to the beach for some quality reading. i am sad to say i might not ever by street and smith's again. the writer was Gary Mc Cann of the rock hill (sc) herald. this guy has LU finishing 4th! CSU ahead of us??? are you kidding?!! i am a realist and i think we are a 2nd place team. it just drives me crazy that these writers simply miss it and really do not get enough information before they write the article. we have better talent than the bucs, and i believe we have only lost to them once in school history. no disrespect to CSU but they will get hammered by the flames. here is mr mc cann's picks:
1. Coastal 2. GWU 3. CSU 4. LIBERTY 5. VMI
street gave coastal a lot of love and a preseason top 25 ranking of #24. it should be a great season.

Its not the first publication to have us 4th. /but keep in mind, a guy in Rock Hill is more likely to be familiar with Chuck South than us. So take it with a giant grain of salt.

I like the whole no respect thing. We do have some big no doubt. I mean we lost 85% of the rushing yardage to graduating last year. QB situation is unproven and we have to replace 3 OL starters. That said, hopefully some of th new guys can step up. The numbers were very low for spring practice as well. I like being picked 4th in the preseason - maybe we can sneak up on a few guys.

As I have stated in the past it is terrible to be rated so low in such a poor conference. Chuck South is about as low as you can get on the 1AA level. Of course I can't say too much about GWU or VMI either. I am not really worried about the high graduation from last year. Change is a good thing since the last few years were not really that good anyway. Hopefully the transferes can help turn things around.

I'm predicting we finish 3rd in-conference...there's no way Chuckso should be ahead of us. GWU-I can see us losing there, since last year's game was tight and they do have the home field advantage this year.

The only thing that I know about transferes are what was posted on signing day back in February. 2 played 1A ball. Stephen Sene OT from South Carolina and Pat thingyerson DB from East Carolina. The rest of them were signed out of Junior college and according to the writeup are either going to start or will given the opportunity to start. The 2 defensive ends are in the starting lineup and the running back and kicker will challenge. I haven't seen anything concerning late transferes from 1A in the local newspapers. I guess if LU has any scholarships left then it is a possibility. We could certainly use some of these.

Overall how was this incoming football class rated? I know from the clip on libertyflames.com Coach K was happy with the kids coming in. Any feedback from any of the recruiting experts?

Ryan Greiser and Zach Troutman were rated in the top 10 at there position of all 1AA recruits from an outside source. That is found on an earlier thread. College Sports.com had 4 listed on their all-american list. Chris Renick, Zach Troutman, Ryan Greiser, and Rod Fluellen are listed. Possibly others were on their too. Zach Terrill was originally committed to JMU but changed his mind at the last minute. Seems like he is regarded pretty highly. Other prospects listed had good credentials (All Staters) especially at DB, WR, and RB. Hope that this helps.

Huge help - thank you! I knew Greiser and Troutman were highly rated and I read the profiles on most of the kids. I just didn't know if anyone had attached a rating to our class in any of the national publications.

I-AAs don't generally have many class ratings. Most of the recruiting world is focused on the I-A kids in football. Some of those slip between the cracks and hit I-AA schools and as a result are given some notice.
Now basketball, there's more of an overall awareness of kids that come into most Division I schools.
All that said, Steve's assessment is basically what I understand as well.

Concerning Ryan Geiser. He had some serious interest from Penn State and Syracuse and competed at a high level in Pennsylvania which has had good football in the past, and put up some serious numbers. Is Ryan an example of some one "slipping through the cracks" of highly recruiting candidates.

I was thrilled to get him. I saw Brock Smith play this past year for Hershey. Big kid good arm. Rumors at the time were that he was going to be baseball only. I'm glad we got him!

Could be the future QB if Travis Johnson doesn't pan out. It seems like Brock lacks serious credentials and played for a bad team but occasional I hear good things about him. Good size.

Hershey was bad. He didn't have much of a cast around him. But he has a live arm and good size - those things are tough to teach!

Stevev - Travis Johnson isn't listed on the roster. I had heard he was going to be a baseball guy from here on out.

You obviously don't have to play on a great team to have the makeup to be a great college player. A surprisingly large majority of the top-ranked football prospects int he nation come from carppy teams. If you have the physical tools and yet our surrounded by lousy coaches & teammates, you'll still succeed on the next level if you can learn to win.

Concerning Travis Johnson, I heard that we was going to stay this summer and work on his skills and possibly compete for the starting QB job according to the Lynchburg Daily Advance. The article also stated that baseball was not in his future plans and football was because Coach Kartcher had changed his mind about booting him off the team. That is unless Travis reconcidered after the article was published. Could be since the Daily Advance is such a sorry newspaper. Does anyone out there have updated information about this.
I can relate to what Sly has just brought up. The University of Delaware, which gets a lot of local press around here, gets quit a few players from poor teams in NJ and PA and they end up becoming stars. Maybe UD's coaching staff is that good. One player I can relate to came from a high school program that didn't win a single game their senior year in high school and he ended up being UD's top defensive player during their championship run 2 years ago. In my mind a player must have the athleticism, be coachable, and willing to work his tail off in practice.

Concerning Ryan Geiser. Is Ryan an example of some one "slipping through the cracks" of highly recruiting candidates. from what I've read, I don't believe so. He was adamant about LU from day 1 just because of what we stand for. A solid kid.

Thanks for the info Steve. I had not heard that so I take it your information is more current than mine. Good news for our team because I think travis has tremendous upside!
