Check out this website that has helmets of the schools in the Big South: www.adrianb.us/helmets/bigsouthhelmets.htmI have to admit that I was disappointed the silver helmet with the LU logo with the flames shooting behind it didn't make it. Those helmets are probably still floating somewhere down the James River at the Treasure Island flood.

I got it. I remember them putting all of the stuff they salvaged from Treaure Islan outside of the Multipurpose Center to dry out. I saw maybe 30 or 40 of those silver helmets (loved those). I almost stopped and picked one up but that wouldn't have been a very Christian thing to do. I think people forget just how close the program was to folding. Now we're playing UConn and Wake and who knows from here on out. Great story. On a sidenote - I often wonder why the AD doesn't have an auction to ge rid of some of the old stuff.

A number of schools have gone to selling off old gear on eBay. Texas A&M does it down here. I'd love to get some of the old stuff as well.

I would scrape together at least 10 bucks and cut the kids back to 2 meals a day to buy some of that stuff.
(KIDDDING- well, maybe)

I was born the year of the flood (85 right?).
Anyway, I would love to see a pic of the silver helmets. Were we any good back then in anything?

Yeah, we were pretty good back then. We sent about a half dozen guys to the NFL in that time period (and not just for tryout camps ... we had that many guys PLAYING ... considerably more than now).
The helmets were extremely cool. We haven't had any half as nice since. They were metallic silver with stripes across the top (I believe it was red/white/navy stripes ... but I could be mistaken since its been a lifetime for someon this board). On the side they had the familiar old-school LU logo on the side inside a circle with multi-color flames trailing behind the logo. The recent trailing flames were an extremely poor knockoff of the original. The decals they used on the logo were awesome and I'd love to see them come back if anyone still has one.
After the flood, we went to basic plain white helmets.

SLY- I seem to remember them saying (at the time) that the white gear was donated after the flood, that was why we ended up "plain Jane". a bit foggy on that though-
