Lou Holtz is set to speak at LU in two weeks or so. Supposedly he is to speak in convo and assist the football program in the future...but not as a coach or staff...but thats all i have heard.
maybe i might get some respect on the board when it hits the papers next week!!!!! (please hit the papers, please hit the p apers! haha)

Couple of big quotes there:
Looks we shouldn't worry about jumping conferences if this is our goal. Hats off to Falwell. Of course, if our goal is 10 years, then we shouldn't be playing D-II schools anymore.
That's not a very encouraging vote of confidence for the current administration.
Falwell just contradicts himself in these two statements. He says it's just solely for having a chapel speaker, but it's also to pick his brain... Is he going to have Holtz lead chapel by having him tell us what needs to be done to have a good program?
In any event... I actually think this is *BAD* news, unless we can get Coach Holtz (or someone recommended by him) to sign on the dotted line. Holtz can say things like "well, if you want to be a D-I program, you're going to have to put money into this, and you're going to have to start doing that." Having a captive audience in Falwell, he'll take those actions before the one that truly needs to happen; e.g., getting rid of the coach.

Ed - I have to disagree with your assessment. I think Dr. J is clearly looking for expert guidance on where the program needs to go. I think this is a VERY positive sign.

I re-read some posts, and was moderately surprised to hear of Lou's Language. I have followed Lou since his days at Arkansas, and have admired his stands and abilities. I have read one of his books, and enjoyed that as well. I am very interested in hearing how the convo goes, and I would like to know if Lou professes to have received the LORD, apart from some composite sacramental equation put out by the Great sleeper of Rev 17. I do like Lou, until shown that I shouldn't, and I think he sounds somewhat like a saved man. Open to comments.

Holtz would not be a good fit for coaching Liberty. Too many allegations of recurting violations from ND and especially South Carolina. He left Coach Spurrier a mess to clean up at SC.

I don't think he would even consider the position under current circumstances. But he would make a great ally for us as we try to build our porgram much the same way Sam's name recognition did wonders for us over a decade ago.

Here's another angle to consider. Holtz is going to "consult" Liberty on how to get to the 1-A level and have a football program that can "make the big money."
I thought that was the reason Dr. Thom Park was hired as the AD. I think it's strange to read an article about Lou Holtz consulting LU and Park's name is never mentioned. Is he already out of the picture?

this should have been kept quiet IMHO. in all respect to coach karcher, this should have been done at the end of the season. we all know that a change should and probably be made, but this turns up speculation, and is really a slap in the face. and the allegations at USC were true. they got slapped on the wrist. i do not know what lou holtz could tell jerry that he could not get from someone else. im not a fan of lou holtz, and i would not want his input.

bigsmooth - I'm not a big Holtz guys myself (as previously stated a year ago when the flirtation rumors were first coming out). But having an ally with his pull can't hurt.
I don't think this is such a slap in the face to Coach Karcher. Jerry was tripping over himself in the story to say that this is about helping with a longterm project and no coaching changes would be considered during the season.

im not ripping the fishwrap. they are just doing their job. i just think LU should keep stuff like this quiet till the end of the season. yes a former coach like holtz probably would provide quality information, but i just do not think he has much integrity.

I agree with Sly. Dr. J didnt do anything wrong by announcing that he would pick Coach Holtz brain about going DI. That doesnt say anything about the coaching staff in place or the current AD. Asking someone to be a consultant to move division levels is much different than asking someone how to recruit or what plays to call.
I do find it odd that we would consult Coach Holtz in regards to moving divisions since he has never been part of a program going from DIAA to DI. Coach Holtz would be an ideal candidate to speak on building a program (recruiting violations aside). He has a track record. Coach Karcher does not and the AD does not. So, I think we may be dancing around the issue that is the elephant in the room. Dr. Falwell will definitely ask Coach Holtz for a frank assesment of the team - seriously, who is better to ask!
As far as the character issues of Coach Holtz, he is very well respected in the NCAA. Were there recruiting violations - you betcha, but the concensus is that he was a great coach and good guy. I have no issues with a guy like that mentioned in the same breath as Liberty.

Why is it every guest who posts on this forum gets attacked for not registering? I can understand it when someone comes on and makes critical or personal comments about a coach, player, or someone on this forum...those people should register if they are going to make accusations. But if anyone reads my replies, I don't do that. Most of my comments are a joke(i know...bad attempts at humor). Maybe I just don't care to register...what's the big deal?
Sly, I suggest you seriously consider requiring people to register for this forum because it obviously is becoming a major issue for some. I still won't register but I will continue to enjoy reading many of the posts.

Yes, normally I like people to register...but normally youcantsaythat hasn't said bad things...he (or she...how do we know it's a he) normally posts some funny stuff...so I have no problem with him or her not registering...Plus, he always uses the same "name" even if he (or she) didn't register....

Gotta admit that YOUCANT is growing on me. He's (generic, non-gender specific use) been a decent contributer here lately, after a rocky start. (I know I'm breaking w/ my usual rant here).
YOUCANT: I will say that the one thing registering does is kinda give you more credibility as somebody on here for more than stirring you know what. No prizes, well- other than what fsn32 gives out for those photo contests!

I will say this: if by some WILD quirk of fate, Lou Holtz was to end up at LU, we would DEFINTELY get the prize for the scoop of the century here on the sports board. I can't find the thread to save my life, but sometime back around July/Aug (?) we were hashing over that very possibility- I remember saying we would NEVER do what it takes to land a guy like that, or run a program in that type of manner. (win at all costs) We are forward thinkers, that's for sure.

Lou was great... you could hear a hint of his Catholic background, but other than that it was like a preacher speaking not a football coach. He also had a lengthy segment on "change" and how as believers you have to embrace it.

It's me - grm - I changed my e-mail, and now need a new activation code, which, of course, I do not have. Anyway, I hear that Lou was great at the convocation. Sly, I have AOL. What can I do to officially get back on?

Your current user name & password should continue to work no matter which ISP you are using. Just try logging in.
Otherwise, I'd suggest you register using a hotmail, yahoo or gmail account.
