The Sports Network has come out with its 2005 I-AA Preseason Rankings from 1 to 98. Here's some of interest to us: 1. Furman 3. JMU 11. William & Mary 13. Delaware 15. Lehigh 18. Hampton 26. South Carolina State 28. Appy State 29. Wofford 34. Coastal Carolina39. Richmond 47. Youngstown St. 51. Chattanooga 68. North Carolina A&T 70. Towson 73. Gardner-Webb [glow=red,2,300]79. Liberty[/glow]84. Delaware St. 86. Elon 91. Charleston Southern 95. VMI96. Norfolk St. 97. Savannah St. www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfoot2/misc/dougherty_archive/extrapoint_070505.htmObviously, the Big South doesn't get much love. But CCU being 34th shows they are beginning to make some believers. If they can have similar success this fall with their much tougher schedule, it will have a positive impact on the rep of the entire league. They have us and G-W similarly ranked. I think that's in accord with the prevailing thought that the two of us are fairly even in our chances this fall. Chuck South and VMI continue to be viewed as roadkill. I guess this helps us see how valuable schools like Hampton & SC State would be to our league should they bolt the MEAC. Although I haven't heard a peep on that subject in a couple of weeks. What do you guys think?

not surprising. we will have to prove ourselves worthy. we can beat coastal in my mind, which i think is the key game this year.....it will be senior night and the boys will be pumped. hampton and SC Statewould be great additions , but i just do not see it happening. in looking at the other BSC schedules, it seems all teams have beefed up their schedules a bit, so this might have to be the road the league takes to prove themselves till we get an automatic bid.

I agree we need to win a few games. It is upsetting though to see the progress CCU has made. I wonder from time to time what would have happened if Morgan Hout would have not gotten canned. He had us moving in the right direction and fan interest was high.

H-burg --- Its been close to two decades now. Let it go.
As for CCU's success, it does make our predicament all the more frustrating. There's no reason why they should be better than us this quickly into their program's existence. But I'd rather have them good and giving our league more cred than sucking like the rest of the league generally does.

CCU serves as the blueprint proving it can be done.

Not really knowing much about their team, like who graduated and who they've retained, I tend to think they won't be as good. This is solely based on the fact that I don't understand how a program that young could do so well. Even with the great resources they have. I'm not willing to make them king of the league until they show they'll do as well year after year. So really, I'll reserve my opinion on them until the end of this year.

They had the advantage of learning from mistakes other programs have made. CCU brought in football consultants, had committees to the consultants, committees to the committees to the consultants - you get the idea. They built a great on campus facility and quite frankly have made a commitment to I-AA football. They will hopefully continue to drive forward and the other BSC schools - LU included - will have to step up or step out of the way!

From what i understand, CCU is bringing nearly their entire team back. They only lost a few players off a team that was made up primarily of sophs & juniors. They should be as good if not better. But they will be playing a MUCH tougher schedule that will make it very difficult to finish 10-1 again.

I must say it is very sad to see LU rated so low. The program must get some wins vs ranked teams or those that are of playoff calibre. A competitive games vs UConn would help greatly or wins vs W & M or YSU. As far as Coastal is concerned you have to give them some credit for doing it in a short amount of time but the question is can they sustain the success against more legitimate competition within 1AA. The rest of the BSC is not worth mentioning since the level of play is so poor.

CCU had a pretty weak schedule last year. However, they handled us pretty easily.

We had one good year against a weak schedule - can we keep it up against tougher competition? We'll find out in 2 months. I have the confidence that we'll do better than expected, but I know that we can also fail miserably if we come into the season or conference play thinking we are the best. I do agree that the only way to strengthen the Big South is to beat the respected teams - so we all need to do our part and represent the Big South!!!

Rok bites the bullet and registers. For those who are new around here, he was a regular poster as a guest last fall during football season.
I'm a bigtime CCU fan in their non-conference portion of the schedule.

G-Dub used to be more respected. Anyway, LU, GWU, and CCU really need to do well in their non-conference schedules in order to get the respect we all want...unfortunately, GWU hasn't put much into their out of conference schedule this season. Hopefully a blow-out win v. D2 Concord at the start of our season will help to boost confidence for a tough out-of-conference schedule.

Hopefully our aggressive non-conference scheduling will help with recruiting down the road.

I'm a bigtime CCU fan in their non-conference portion of the schedule. Such a warm welcome - I don't even no what to say. I have been lurking for a while but figured I'd better just register as I knew I'd be around here more often during football season. In all reality - the only time I will wish against another BSC school is when they are playing us. Our conference is pretty unstable so all we have is eachother. It is in all of our best interests to see each other succeed with our OOC. So good luck Flames in your OOC - you guys have a tough one too - probably worse. GWU plays some good teams as well with a couple of cupcakes. Doing well as a conference will only make us stronger and more appealing to other schools. EDIT: I shouldn't have left VMI off of this. If they can come off of that terrible season last year and turn it around they have a chance to shock some decent teams. CSU doesn't have a good OOC schedule.
