hey sly! it is good to be back! i just found this board recently. how are things in texas? this is my opinion on our football situation. OPTION 1- we pray that appy st. goes 1-A and coastal and LU team up for all sport membership in the SOCON. yes that screws the other BSC schools, but commissioner kallander has not been prudent in getting 6 teams for football. OPTION 2--The BSC should aggressively seek top level D2 teams which most are in the south and get them in the league. that may keep coastal in. OPTION 3--seek membership in the CAA.....i believe this won't happen because our academic standards are not high enough, but are getting better. OPTION 4-- go 1-A play a few home games and be everyone's whipping boy as troy university did and that money coud fuel the atlhletic dept. we should prove ourselves in I-AA first but an idea

hey bigsmooth, obviously we have the conference discussion going on in the genral forum. But as for your ideas, I am not sold on making the move to the Southern Conference. It upgrades football but does little else. And without Appy St, the league loses some lustre in the process.
So the way I see it, we have to go with either option 2 or 4. Perhaps we do Option2 until we are ready for Option 4. But the way things are going with the NCAA standards, we may just step right on up to I-A membership along with a bunch of others in our region.

I would say go with option 3 or 4. Aggressively seek membership in the Colonial and if that doesn't pan out go independant and transition into 1A slowly. I am starting to agree with most of you that the Southern is on the way down and is not as attractive an option as it ounce appeared to be. Option 2 sucks. It would take too long to develope and with too much uncertainty. Scheduling would suffer as well as our possiblities of a playoff berth. Even if the BSC gets enough teams there is no credability to substantiate an automatic birth.

I think we all agree we would love to get in the Colonial. But they are at 12 teams now and have no interest in further expansion. So the CAA is basically a non-issue as far as we are concerned right now.

I like the option for Big South Expansion.
Especially if we could get some existing 1-AA teams like SC State or Hampton to join...see Sly's note under conference expansion and the Coastal Carolina board.

I vote for a bigger BIG South as well. Stay w/ what we have till we dominate, than go D1 A.

I would go for the bigger big south also. I like the idea of bringing up some really good Division 2 schools like Valdosta State and Albany State. Even a Savannah State move to the BSC wouldn't hurt. This would definitely increase Liberty's chances at becoming one of the elite schools in I-AA because of our chances to get into the play-offs consistently. I know for a fact that there are schools in D2 that are desperately knocking on I-AA doors, so that is not a bad idea at all.
