I really dont think so anyone remember Marcus White....he played what 2 years and got kicked out of school for being at a party back in 98 i think it was...now he in my judgement in only 2 years showed some things no guard in LU's history has ever done...one of the quickest players ..he made Chris Caldwell's quickness with the ball look like his legs where trapped in quicksand.....and can you say vertical at 6'1 this guy got up and dunked on anyone and everyone very very fast in traffic....he had all the tools to get on with a NBA team very Iverson like game.....Blair is good but after i saw what Chris Paul did to him at a camp i think maybe he's the 3rd best behind that Williams kid that transfered in from WVU a few years ago he was a monster too...

you know Bailey was TOUGH...but my money's with Hildo...that dude nearly carried us to a victory against the #1 team...i dont know if it's fair to have "the best" we need a first team for each position

Well for my money no one was better than Bailey. He scored 2000 plus points in 3 seasons and he did it making over half of his shots! We think guys are good shooters now days if they have 40% field goal mark. And every team threw their entire gameplan at him. And truthfully if he were held accountable to play both ends could have been a pro. Marco (Marcus White was good but he couldn't score like Bailey consistently and had a broke jump shot his 2 years at Liberty. Larry Jackson and Chris Caldwell both deserve to be mentioned in the conversation in my opinion. Blair is definitely in the conversation as well and could get to 2000 points. Hildo is my boy but I think he is over rated in terms of being considered the best. Larry Jackson has better stats in almost every category except Free throws and if Jackson had won one of the Big South championships or if Caldwell had a coach we might be talking a lot about them. Carl Williams was pretty good until the Big South figured out how to guard him. That is why I give it to Bailey. He got everyone night in and night out. He was unstoppable, EVERY GAME! I know because I was there btw.

I think Caldwell's fame came from the fact that he didn't have a coach, or a team, surrounding him. It got to the point where he was the only option for LU on the court -- like he was playing 1 against 5 basketball. That's why he racked up the points... plus, as I recall, he wasn't a very high pct. shooter.
I'd give the nod to Bailey, simply because I trust Scar's opinion on this issue, although I think Baily racked up his 2,000 points while still in D-II competition.

Wasn't Bailey around with Fahrquar (that era)? I thought we were D1 by that point but I'm old and confused now. SCAR or SLY can probably remember better. I think the last couple years we were in Liberty Gym we were D1.

Bailey was at the school during the end of the DII and the beginning of the DI era. Trust those of us who witnessed his play when we say he would excel at any level. The man had serious game. He's easily a strong scorer at a good high major today (except for his nearly 40-year-old knees). He was that good.
That's not meant as a slight to anyone else mentioned in this thread.

Actually when Bailey and I were sophmores we were still division II but played an all Division 1 non conference schedule. We had to finish that last season of Mason-Dixon Athletic Conference competition before having an all Division 1 schedule the following 2 seasons and since. However Bailey average 37 that year vs Division 1. Trust me guys, I have seen all the guards that have come through the doors since 86 and no one did what Bailey did period! For those of us that saw him, the comparisons are not even close. But if you just go by stats, the guy scored 2000 points in 3 not 4 years! I don't think that is sinking in. It just kind of hit me a few years ago myself! What an amazing accomplishment. If LB averages 20 per game he could hit 2000 for his career by the way which would be more than enough to hang his jersey in the lights of the Vines Center IMHO.

And yes Sly I did hit Hankinson pretty hard with the coaching comment. Sorry Mel but that era of coaching was horrible to watch. Ed makes a good point about Caldwell's shooting percentage and scoring a lot because he took a lot of shots but if they knew how to play and win, he wouldn't have had to face the defenses he faced (as Larry does now) and still have to take shots. No one can stay in front of Chris one on one. I have been a guy on the court that no one guards and I have been a guy that the defense is geered towards stopping and trust me on this one you have no idea how tough it is to score when every one of your strengths is scouted out and the other team tries to take it away. Thats what makes Blair special and it is what makes Bailey Alston the best. In spite of the defensive schemes, they can still perform nightly.

it does not matter if bailey was playing DII competition at some point in his career...he was the man. i wish some of the younger guys could have seen him play. i do agree if larry keeps up his current pace he should be the second best guard in the program, but it is really a no-brainer....bailey alston is the best.

For the record, you know I have to give the Houstonian his props as well. While there may not have been any coaching or other scoring options, CC could seriously ball.

Chris Caldwell was very good I played with him many time on campus and off...he's not as quick as Marcus White was though nor could he jump as high ....I really dont know those old school guys so I can only compare to what I know.....now the best basketball athlete that I saw didnt even get to play on the team when Hankinson was the Coach and i forget the kids name but not his game...he is Tracy McGrady's 1st cousin though and with a game just like him ...he dominated the LU Ballers when they dared come into the Schilling Center...and at 6'5 200 he had the size to play for LU but the coaches never gave him a shot in the one semester he was here...he beat Mo Williams in a dunk contest he beat Mark Manly in a dunk contest too of the finest LU dunkers ever and he Slamed on Phil Ward so hard one day Phil left the gym....There has been MANY a great athlete to come to Liberty only to leave with little of no eligiblity and tons of non-transferable credits

I wasn't here when Bailey was around but I like some others trust Scars opinion plus I believe he lead the nation in scoring, I believe. Probably best player yes but from 93 to 2005 Player I would choose to start a team: Hildebrand. Marcus white was seriously quick. Stayed in too much trouble. Jackson could play but a great supporting cast. That is why when it is all said and done Blair will probaly come in a close 2nd to Bailey. With Dees gone everyone will double team Blair but still puts up the numbers.
