It was gone but it started back up 2 years ago. They were pretty good in their respective league. Whatever that was. I assume they're still going this year since they bought all that equipment. When they started up they took anybody on the team. If you had never heard of lacrosse but could afford to buy the stuff, you were welcome on the team. Their coach was Winthrop's coach but he quit to coach at LU. He had a job with the airlines so he just flew up on weekends.

When they started up the Lacrosse program back int he Late '80s, about half the team was newbies and they were toroughly thrashed by a schedule of big name schools. They appeared to be starting to turn the corner when I left in '89.
Since it generates zero revenue, the club had to raise all kinds of funds to compete. I'm guessing that would get to be a drag after awhile.

For those who still care:
LU Men’s Lacrosse Intercollegiate Club Team to Hold Media Day January 24, 2005
The Liberty University Men’s Lacrosse Intercollegiate Club Team will hold a media day to discuss the team, players, and its 14-game schedule for the 2005 season on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in the Williams Stadium press box. The Flames are ranked 28th in the pre-season National poll and will play one of the most difficult schedules in the USLIA Division B.
Highlighting the 2005 schedule are games against nationally ranked opponents in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) and the Unites States Lacrosse Interscholastic Association (USLIA) including Appalachian State (ranked 20th), Nichols State (24th), Elon (27th), Central Connecticut (30th), and Taylor University (33rd). In addition, the team will play seven of their 14 games at Williams Stadium.
The Liberty Men’s Lacrosse team is a member of the Division B League of the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC), which is part of the Unites States Lacrosse Interscholastic Association (USLIA). Liberty joined the USLIA and the SELC in 2004, achieving a 6-6 record and a final ranking of 36th in the USLIA National Poll in their first season. Junior attack man, Michael Dean, First Team All SELC and Honorable Mention for All American, leads the Flames into the 2005 season. Michael had 28 goals and 22 assists for the Flames in 2004. The team will also be led on the field by co-captains, sophomore midfielder, Kyle McQuillan and senior defenseman, Jason Lombardozzi. Talented players like senior attack man Matt Cost, freshman midfielder Ryan Allen, sophomore goalie Chad Gurney, and freshman defenseman Adam Woodmansee will comprise the most talented Liberty Lacrosse team in school history. The team was founded in 1985 and participated in the National Collegiate Lacrosse League (NCLL) until 1998. The team briefly dissolved until its restoration in fall of 2002. The lacrosse players spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons playing a small schedule and organizing the team for a return to college lacrosse on a full-time basis. The team rejoined the collegiate lacrosse scene in 2004, joining the SELC as a member of the USLIA.
LU Lacrosse head coach, John Westfall, is a 1987 LU alumnus and has been involved with the Flames since 2002, organizing the team for a strong return to collegiate club sports. Westfall became the Head Coach in the fall of 2003 and compiled a 6-6 record in the Flames’ first year. Before joining the Flames, John coached lacrosse at the University of New Mexico, Colorado School of Mines, South Carolina University, and Winthrop University. In addition, Westfall was named Coach of the Year for the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League in 1999 and has a lifetime record of 77-65.

OK- dug up the site(s) for mens' and ladies' lacrosse. Support these teams! www.geocities.com/libertylacrosse/looks like the guys are off to a great spring start: 19-5 W over UNC-Charlotte. WAY TO GO! ladies evidently open against Duke at home, 2/27, though I didn't see WHERE on campus they play. GOOD LUCK! (does that poor girl on the home page actually have TAPE for a number on her shirt?! Good Lord, I'll send a donation down TOMORROW!)

I just got an email concerning the Lacrosse team, read below:
"I just got word that the Liberty men's lacrosse team was in a bad car accident. They are in Alabama on their spring break trip. Apparently one of the vans was hit by a semi and the other van then ran into the van and semi. Both vans are totaled and the guys, including the coach and his young children, in one whole van are in the hospital. It's a very bad situation so please pray!!"

Saw it on the news last night. The coach was still unconscious at the time of the report. Many players were taken to intensive care (one was airlifted) including one who had a severed ear and one guy who's leg was so bad they amputated. Eyewitnesses said the van in back couldn't slow down in time and hit the lead van and both ran into a semi. The players were thrown all over the road and one was thrown under the van. The boys that were able to got together and lifted the van off of him. This was all as of 6pm last night.

Here's the lastest email from one of the assistant coach's wife, who I work with:
The latest news I have is from last night when my husband (the assistant coach) talked to some of the players. So, as of last night, many of the players had been released from the hospital. Two had concussions and the coach and his 2 sons have broken arms. Jason's leg is broken in a few places and he is going in for surgery today. Ryan (Kansas) had surgery last night on his leg which was pretty torn up around his hip. Chad (goalie) had surgery last night and is the worst shape with broken ribs, arm, leg and back. Many of the guys are coming home today or tomorrow. When I get more updates I will share them. Thanks for your prayers. They are definitely working!!

The latest from one of the assistant coaches' wife:
I got to spend some time with the guys who returned home last night and they are all in good spirits! Some are bandaged and have broken bones, but they are thankful to be alive! Many are going to their homes to try to enjoy the rest of spring break. I have heard that Ryan (Kansas) is doing well. Jason should be released soon with a broken leg. Chad has had pins put in his back and should be able to walk again soon. Praise the Lord! They really thought he was going to lose his leg at one point (but he did not have it amputated as many have heard). Coach and his kids are in stable condition, but have broken bones and other injuries. The stories these guys have to share about how God intervened is amazing and will surely touch many people's lives. Thank you all for your prayers. They really appreciate them!! They will still need prayer as this will surely haunt many of them, but we know that God is definitely not done with them yet!!

Here's the latest from the campus pastor's office, it's long:
I just got off the phone with Tim Jackson, and he has some great news about the 6 people still in the hospital:
Chad Gurney had a successful surgery to put a rod in his leg yesterday- if all continues to go well with him, he will be having a surgery to put 2 rods in his back tomorrow. Yesterday, they also gave him some time off of his ventilator, and he was talking, eating, and drinking. He got the chance to speak with Tim and Dr. Hine. Right now, if all continues to progress at the current rate, they hope that he will be able to go home in about 10 days.
Ryan “Kansas” Leaming may possibly travel home today! If he is released, he will be making the drive home to his home state of Kansas with his parents today. Yesterday, he had a surgery to repair a broken bone on his right wrist. Tim says that his progress has been no less than a miracle- his right leg that was trapped under the 18 wheeler was gouged pretty bad, and the muscles are stretched out pretty bad. He will be going home to continue treatment and physical therapy there.
Jason Lombardozzi will have another x-ray done on his ankle today, and if it looks good enough, he will be flying home today.
Coach John Westfall hit his head pretty hard in the accident, and whether because of the injury or just the overwhelming trauma of trying to process it all, he is not 100% clear-minded. His son, Jackson had to get his broken arm set last night and it is now casted. His other son, Jeremiah has about 100 stitches on the left side of his face from road rash. If all continues to improve, the whole family will check out and go to Pensacola today to Mrs. Westfall’s parents’ house to rest and heal.
Tim said that the progress that they have seen from day to day in each of these people is downright miraculous. For Chad and Kansas to be where they are, even compared to where they were yesterday, is unbelievable. Continue to pray for their healing.
The “southern hospitality” and testimony of Christians has been unbelievable. A small Christian school down there had done a lot by way of preparation for the boys, even before they made it to the hospital, and continues to be available to minister. They have even provided vehicles and transportation for Tim and Mark while they have been down there with the boys. Please pray for Chad’s parents- they are unsaved, but are seeing the incredible testimony of believers down there from the boys on the team and from everyone down there, as well. Pray that God will warm their hearts and move them to salvation through this.
There is a possibility that Tim may return tonight or tomorrow, and Dr. Hine will likely be down there until at least Saturday.
Continue to pray!

Here's the word from the Falwell Confidential:
Date: March 18, 2005 From: Jerry Falwell
WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES
Last Monday afternoon, I received one of those phone calls. You know the types — the ones bearing the sort of bad news that abruptly pours over you like a cold rain.
The call was from a Liberty University student, Corey Noseworthy, who informed me that two vans carrying our university lacrosse team (and Corey) had crashed near Mobile, Ala. Many players and Coach John Westfall and his family had been injured, he said.
I felt an immediate surge of helplessness as I tried to consol Corey and encourage him to remain calm in spite of the dire situation.
The scene of the accident was horrific. Three students who were trapped underneath one of the vans were screaming out for their teammates to help them. By God’s grace, the boys were able to lift that huge 15-passenger van off their friends so that they could escape. Two others were pinned underneath the 18-wheeler with which they had collided.
One of the players, Chad Gurney, was critically injured and flown by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center. Another student, Ryan Leaming, was also seriously injured. Several of the players experienced lesser injuries such as broken bones and severe lacerations and were transported by ambulance to area hospitals. Coach Westfall and his twin eight-year-old sons traveling with him suffered significant injuries, including broken bones.
Later that afternoon and into the evening, Liberty pastors and officials contacted the coach’s wife, Lisa, and families of the involved players. We arranged for a university plane to fly three Liberty pastors and deans to Alabama. Enroute, we picked up the coach’s wife in South Carolina and flew her and our officials to Mobile.
Our pastors and deans are still in Alabama because the coach, his twins and Chad Gurney are still hospitalized there. However, we have flown all of the boys who were uninjured or treated and released from area hospitals back to Lynchburg on two separate flights.
I was so proud of all of the boys. That night on area news broadcasts, several of them were seen discussing the crash and offering praises to their Savior for seeing them through what could have been a deadly accident. The boys were heartbroken that they had to leave their fallen teammates behind, but they have continued to be in touch with them through phone calls and conversations with their family members.
Chad Gurney has undergone two operations, one to repair his shattered leg and another to mend broken vertebrae in his back. The Liberty community has been in constant prayer for them and the entire team during this time of suffering. We shall forever be grateful to the University of Mobile and its president Dr. Mark Foley for literally adopting our students and their families this week. Mobile-area churches have done the same. We have observed the family of God, most of whom we have never met, closing ranks around our wounded Liberty athletes.
LIFE IS BRIEF
It is during times like these that I am reminded of a pertinent and powerful verse in the Bible. It reads: “[Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14, NKJV).
After living more than 71 years, I can candidly state that the days have quickly passed by. Consequently, the longer I live, the more passionate I feel about ensuring that people are prepared to stand before Jesus Christ when their lives are over. This situation reminds me that none of us are promised a tomorrow.
Over the years of my ministry, we have published millions of copies of a powerful booklet titled, “The How To Book: God’s Principles for Mending Broken Lives.” It reveals many keys to living a fulfilling life of faith in Jesus Christ. We have given out these booklets, free of charge, through the years with the hope that they impact people’s lives.
The truth is that, like the Liberty lacrosse team learned, life can be quickly transformed from a series of delightful days into a blur of confusion and despair within an instant. It behooves us to be spiritually prepared for the one certainty of life — death.
I encourage everyone reading this column today to seriously consider this fact and to ask himself or herself if they are prepared to stand before the God of the universe when the vapor of this life is over. If you feel that you are not ready to meet God, I encourage you to contact this ministry to get a copy of “The How To Book.” There is no fee for the book. It is a gift from me to those friends who want to know more about the Bible and what it says about this life and matters of eternity. God has a plan for everyone and this little booklet will let you know how you can experience a life in harmony with Jesus Christ.
