good news for LU hockey, and other club programs in the area if they were not playing games at the roanoke civic center.
August 24, 2006 Ice Station remains open, but not to everyone A Roanoke ice practice facility will stay open through the winter after all, but not for everyone.
Owners of the Ice Station say announced early this year they would close the facility down. Today, they announced the Ice Station will remain open, but only to hockey leagues, intercollegiate hockey matches and private group activities through March of 2006.
The Ice Station owners say the facility will be open to the public on a limited basis. Negotiations for a new owner are in the works.

That's fantatsic news considering the alternatives. The place has been an adequate home to our program for a long time. Thankfully, they're keeping the doors open just long enough to fill our needs.

They said they might put some of the old seats from the schilling center into the Lahaye Ice Center. Hopefully they at least do that (and hopefully they could paint them red or something, so they at least look new). Does anyone have any idea how much space there will be for seats, though? I'll bet the rink and locker rooms take up most of the building.

I'm sure there'll be room for seats, the reason why we all stand is because there are no bleachers to sit on.

photo's 3, 5 and 7 seem to show a good deal of room outside the perimeter of where the ice surface will be, at least enough for several rows of bleachers. Considering the size of your normal rink- even bleachers down one side oughta seat 1000. Anyone that can come up w/ the actual specs please post them.

Interesting about the hockey. My son plays ACHA D-II for Cal State Long Beach. They're good, but Liberty is considered VERY good at this level. We're travelling to play Penn, St. Joe's, and Rutgers (if the schedule doesn't change) in the area of Jan 13-14-15. We play USC, Weber State, BYU, San Jose State, Arizona, Arizona State... and of course, as you guys know, there is a national tournament, which we would like to be in one of these days. Anyway, it's great that you're getting a rink - but that part about no seats What's that?

The boys won their opening game tonight against Lafayette University by a score of 7-1. It was a fairly exciting game, although it started off slow with our boys playing quite sluggish, but they were able to shake the rust off and take care of the game. The next game is in two weeks at UVA, hopefully there will be a large crowd that will go up to watch the boys play.

I can answer a few of the questions posted.
Will the game be streamed on the net- the plan is for that to begin in the new rink. There is infastructure being put in for radio, TV, and internet streaming in the rink.
The stands- Yes the stands are in a the next phase. Since the funds for the rink are being donated, you can only use what you have. Let's see: Zamboni or stands? Let's just pray that God will provide the funds for the stands.
Lack of seating? I am not sure why you thought there was going to be a lack of seating. One side will be stands from the floor to the ceiling, and there will be stands and standing room around the entire second level of the rink, expect over the Zamboni room. This place will seat probably 2500 and have room to stand for an additional 500.

welcome to the board- HockeyAlum- and register if you can, it lends a little credibility.
the whole issue of the seating arose when the rink was first announced: ADMINISTRATION was the source of the quote stating there would be no seats due to the "tradition" of standing, supposedly established by the students.
*standing in front of this thing over the weekend- its BIGGER than it looks in the pix, and they had impressed me on their own! WOW

We won 10-3. However the score is kind of deceiving. We were up 6-1 after the first period and up 10-2 after the second period. However, we played basically the entire third period with at least on man in the penalty box. Plus UVA started to play very dirty for all of the third and most of the second, so unfortunately some of our boys stopped focusing on the game at hand, and instead were retaliating to what the UVA players were doing. But hey, a win is a win.

Oh and by the way. this weekends game against VMI was cancelled so they will be playing Radford instead. It won't be much of a game considering that RU is a division below us, so look for a football type score afterwards.
