If the rink in Roanoke closes, where will Radford, VT, and VMI play their home games? (yes-we share it with those schools...though playing Radford and VMI won't happen anytime soon cuz they're both DIII clubs). Anyway, I'm sure Jerry can arrange somethin for them to continue playing.

Even though I have only been to one LU hockey game, I think there should be mass protests if the Ice Station closes

Hey ya'll, I went onto campus today and I saw the framing up for the Ice center. I think ATrain told me that the Ice Station isn't closing. Gotta double source everything though

I heard that the Ice Statin is already closed. Can anyone verify that it is still open?
I know that the Civic Center is still open, and the Roanoke team is moving from the ECHL to the Colonial league, I think...
That's what I heard.

The Roanoke Valley Vipers will be playing hockey in the UHL (with Richmond and a bunch of Northern based teams) and the Ice Station seems pretty closed. Take a look at their webpage... www.theicestation.comWhich backs up all the stories I have heard out of Roanoke... WDBJ is a pretty reliable source. There have been a few rumblings about the city taking over the place because the team will need a practice facility. This would surprise me because the city didn't exactly go out of their way to help keep the Express. They seem to be a bit biased toward NBDL... at least in past lease negotiations and such. Plus, if the Roanoke City Government took over the rink, the ice would probably lean to the left.

Forgive me for the stupid question but what is the white-ish structure behind the steel in the last picture- new dorms, a hotel?

Its facing across University Blvd. toward 460...it you're coming onto campus, Extended Stay America is on your left across from Ericsson/Campus North. And I recommend staying at the Wingate over ESA as well.

I like those too. I would like to see another version with LIBERTY written diagonally ala the NY Rangers. I bet those would sell as well.

Like Proto said a while back- BRANDING. We've gotta be consistent, and market the CRAP outta the logo.

Thanks for all the pictures! I love to hear about the hockey stuff! My brother was the manager or something like that for a few years and he was on the JV team. I loved to watch the games and will have to try to make it to Liberty to see one on campus!

if LU wanted to field a scholarship hockey program they could and would have real success. i have a friend that played at mercyhurst a pretty good hockey program, and saw liberty play before and he said LU could right now play d-II and be successful. with the talent we pull form canada, and the growth of youth hockey in the southeast, i would not mind seeing us play D-II and then jump to d-I. hockey has always been supported at LU, and going scholarship would be sweet!

the problem being we'd need to add Ladies LAX or something else to fulfull Title IX if I'm not mistaken.

If I'm not mistaken, we are adding hockey as a Division I sport I believe for the 2006-2007 season. Am I wrong?
As for Title IX, we should be all good as long as we keep the scholarships numbers relatively close.

is it cumulative scholarships to divided among mens/ladies sports or equal number of mens/ladies teams that are fielded? was never clear on that one.

would love to see all the club sports go scholly but probably too expensive while we try to get back on our feet both financially and in the major sports. Guess thats why Winthrop and others bail on the football program and focus on one or two others.

I know plans are for ice hockey to go D-I, but I think Sly's dates are a bit too soon. As for Title IX, we could always add women's golf (the one Big South sport that we don't field a team in), that wouldn't be a huge drain on the athletic budget.

good point- travel expenses would probably be the biggest cost associated w/ Ladies Golf.
