That is correct SCAR. Liberty is looking to improving the sound in the Vines Center. It was built as a gym and was not designed to handle sound very well. The blessing in disguise is that, because Liberty holds Convocation and Night Church in the Vines - they have to improve the sound system. Which in the long run will improve the sound for games. This is great, because you are talking about a 1 to 2 million dollar investment. We have explored putting in a center hanging scoreboard and SCAR you are right again - the only think we could do is hang four screens like we have now and project the image.

The screens work out just as well even if it does seem a tad cheesey. Most schools would kill to have anything like it.
I love that court, option 1. Is there any chance of getting that horrid brown color around the court changed? My favorite thing about this logo is it was super cool at first but now that we're over the initial coolness of it, it's not stupid. It's just normal. Hopefully it will withstand the test of time and not get dated.

I was not a fan of the big screens at first but now I like them. Part of the appeal is that it is different from other arenas. Maybe in the future as the program grows, enhanced computer graphics and animation could be added, but for now the screens look good. Now the football scoreboard...that could stand to be replaced.

We are working on better graphics for next year. We have a crazy amount of talent here at Prototype, and can't wait to get our hands on some in-game visuals ...off topic ~ heard about the new AD?

I agree LUCONN... option 1 is nice, but was there any consideration for having red painted in the lane and around the court?
We are the Flames and it would make sense to incorperate red into the arena more. If we are branding it "the Furnace" and the team is "the Flames" it would make sense to have a red court... a la the Miami Heat (red paint on floor) and the Calgary Flames (red seats and uniforms). I guess it is just human nature to think Flames=Red.
It would also brighten the place up... there is enough blue and gray in there already. Not to mention it would be a change of pace... it's been blue since day one. New era... new color.

We will explore red. This is what this site is all about. Letting our fans have a say. I will post in the next couple of weeks the two options for a poll.

lane. I think using red trim inside the baseline and outlining the lanes would be pretty cool. Logo in the middle is sweet!
The only thing I would have done differently would be using Liberty Flames on the baseline vs. The Furnace.

Love the logo at center court. Looks good. I would agree with those who want more red in the overall look. I think the red is consistent with the Flames theme. Also, thanks prototype for posting the ideas on this forum. It's refreshing to see alumni and fans have some input.

As mentioned before, I never really understood why we called the place "The Furnace" if our primary color is going to be blue - which it has to be, because the chairs are all blue.
That being said, I say go with blue and red trim, sticking with option 1.

Been away for awhile and probably will be once again as most of us students are enjoying spring break!
a few ideas from the student side -
Large Logo - Awesome, I agree with the a little more red than blue, and i like the idea of moving "The Furnace" writing maybe on the side of the court instead of baselines. Has there been any ideas of filling the "outside key" out to the three point line red or blue?
What about changing some corner structre to the gym and adding some scoreboards there, no one really sits in the low corner seats and a little structre change might help a new look to the place.
And forget changing the words for the PA Announcer, that dude is a has been and does not even have an announcing voice. I will just be nice and say...Replace him along with the sound system
My last idea, the seats above the tunnel, NO ONE sits in, EVER, what about a black tarp the says LU or even has the eagle head spread out over it, obviously removable for bigger games or events i.e. Big South or Concerts, Church ect.
I think apart of the Vines is not getting more people there (which yes we do need) but how about trying to make it look more full, if you know what i mean?

Prototype, I noticed somewhere in this post you mentioned branding the fans as "Furnace Fanatics"-please, DON'T DO IT. There are several small sub-fan groups to go along with the general loyal student fans (which would include yours truly). 1.-The Red Man group-aka The Flamers who paint themselves red just about every game. 2.-The Flames Fanatics/LU Lunatics who sit across from the opposing team bench and heckle them mercilessly (and thank God they do it b/c the men wouldn't win if they didn't).
No one on campus that I know of calls it the Furnace to begin with...and I don't think that'll ever change.

If it's true the students don't even refer to the place as the "furnace" than can we please drop that name. Maybe it's time to start brainstorming and come up with something better for the Vines Center or perhaps we can call the new indoor track the "air conditioning unit". Why not use an internet poll where students and alumni could choose a new name?

Dont names for facilities just happen? Forcing the name seems like just that - forced. Nicknames just come or they dont. The Vines Center is kind of a good name just as it is. "You going to the Vines" or "I cut through Vines" works. Maybe you should just work with the Vines theme. I am not saying jungle or anything, but work on what is existing.

Yeah, I agree, everyone calls it the Vines Center and nothing else. It's used for too many other things to really call it the Furnace. "I'll see you at convo in the Furnace." Just doesn't work.

Love all the work the Prototype folks have done to date. But I am with you guys - the Furnace just isn't getting it done. PLEASE don't put that on the floor. I'd rather call our place the Multipurpose Center!

Post by PittLU on Mar 22, 2005 7:15:06 GMT -5
No, I have to disagree. The multipurpose tag was horrible. That was at the time LU was ascetically unpleasing and had no character. just like the name "multipurpose center".

I was using the Multipurpose reference as a dig. The point was The Furnace is as bad as the Multipurpose Center in my opinion. We're on the same page though regarding a forced nickname for the arena!

No one calls it the MultiPurpose anymore, that died when I was attending. It's known as the Schilling.

Once upon a time, the old multipurpose center was called Liberty Gym when used as a basketball venue. But PAmedic, is there any purpose in datibng ourselves anymore than we do already?

It's official...LU announced today that the Vines center will forever be known as the Feenstra center(get it...Feenstra--Center) To the dismay of Prototype, "The Furnace" will not be painted on the court. Instead "Home of the Lady Flames" will be painted along the baseline. Also, in keeping with the Flames theme, the new mascot will be known as Freddie the Fire Hydrant, raising serious concerns about what opposing mascots will try to do to him. One final note...the pep band, known as "the sweet 16" is suing the NCAA, CBS and ESPN for stealing their name. Remember you can always trust The Insider for "accurate" information.

Since we're on the topic of names here, does anyone realize that since we got Ericcson, its had 4 names: Main Campus Annex, MCA, and now the reigning Campus North/North Campus.

THere used to be a North Campus back int he Late '80s over on 29. Perhaps that's why they hesitated to call Ericcson the North Campus now.

Prototype:
Please don't put the words "The Furnace" on the sides...everyone posting here is correct, no one calls it that.
Instead, why not put "The Vines"...that's what everyone calls it anyhow.
You could leave the letters white with the blue background...maybe you could get fancy with the font and make it somekind of script font that actually make the words "THE VINES" look like vines.
