NOOO-do Home of the Lady Flames instead, I actually like that idea...let the rest of the conference know who rules the women's court and where they're at.

I had to laugh- got that newspaper thing earlier this week (the one that comes out so late that all the news contained in it is old by the time it gets to me) contained a story with a phrase along these lines: ...in the Vines Center, or- as the students like to call it- the FURNACE
and I'm sitting there reading it going, NO, NO they DON"T like to call it that!

I agree "The Furnace" just doesn't get it done. What does the board think about giving students nicknames like the "Cameron Crazies"? I don't like the CC's but the name came naturally. Now you have everyone trying to force nicknames on fans and arenas - to me it doesn't cut it. Question for prototype because they are the pros here not me - is there any branding benefit or financial benefit to doing this or is it just an attmept to get fans to identify with the team.
My thought are great college traditions just evolve and for the most part happen by chance vs. being created.

thats the thing w/ LU- its such a young school that enough time hasn't elapsed for REAL traditions to evolve. That, and there has been sooo much change over the last 30 yrs that the school is nothing like what it first was, so NO traditions could be formed.
In order to fit in at the D1 level- admin feels they have to force things on the students here that naturally came about over the course of time (100+ yrs) at other schools.
don't know if any of that made sense- only one cup of coffee so far today

it does make sense however I think we need to make due with the traditions we have. For instance...in the football uniform redesign I'd like to see us incorporate things from years past. Maybe you use the current helmet but use the striping sequence on the pants and shirts from the Tom Dowling years. Kind of as a tribute to those who stapped it on when we had no on campus facility and bused to Treasure Island to practice. Then really play that up as a source of inspiration. Maybe get something from the old island like Tech has the lunchpail. Just a thought.
I guess you could look at our colorful history to date and pull in some nice stories from the apst that if people knew about them they may embrace. Thus adopt a tradition or legend.
The other thing I have a real bug on is the fight song. when we borrowed VT's band for the NCAA WBB tourney how did they play our fight song? I bet it sounded like you were at a college game not at the over 60's singles night at the Hilton! Dr. Kerr and the Sweet 16 have got to pick it up on MBB gameday. Did you know that NOWHERE in the LU archives, band office, bookstore, etc. you can get a recording of LU's fight song? That is bad people. Sounds corny but it still contributes to the gameday atmosphere! How hard would it be to record the fight song, put it on a CD or cassette and give it to new students during orientation with a packet on school athletic traditions?

cool idea w/ the fight song, I mean. You could EASILY add it to the website as a WAV file. any techno geek (heck, even I could do it) could do it in 5 min.
Proto: are ya listening?

What if added a school song to the fight song and ripped off "The Eyes of Texas". We just switch out 'Texas' for 'Heaven' in the lyrics (not much of a stretch there sang to the slowed down tune of 'I've been working on the railroad':
The eyes of heaven are upon us all the live long day. The eyes of heaven are upon us. They never look away. Do not think you can escape them ... from night til early in the morn. The eyes of heaven are upon us til Gabriel blows his horn.
It would definitely remind everyone of whose watching whether you are naughty or nice (and I don't mean St. Nick). And I don't think there would be any copyright issues since down here Texas & heaven are used interchangeably. ;D
On second thought, why mess with perfection. (Hook Em Zach)

And I don't think there would be any copyright issues since down here Texas & heaven are used interchangeably. ;D oh boy- seems as though the wacky weed use is kicking up down south again. EVERYONE KNOWS heaven is in the North East US other than JERSEY, that is and yes- I've decided to use the annoying smileys. today only

Sly - I always likes the Houston Cougars grwoing up. They were something in football back in the days of Jack Pardee and John Jenkins - man they scored points in the run and shoot - I have a bunch of their old playbooks. UofH was pretty good in MBB too!
Oh how the mighty have fallen!

I'm reading. Taking it all in. Great comments. We will move away from the Furnace. We will not call it the Fireplace.

Hey prototype - how much input do the students have? have you guys ever surveyed them to see how they feel on some of this stuff. You have to remember you're talking to a bunch of old hags here for the most part!

We try and get a lot of student's feedback. We want the students to start feeling a sense of ownership when it comes to Athletics. That was the connection with the students - the current students are the ones pushing us to push the Furnace Fanatics - I just agree it might pass or change and probably should be left off the court.

I figured that to be the case. I know it's tough getting students and old hags on the same page. You guys are really an asset to the ADept. Thanks!

Or instead of the Furnace we could call it Hell. How cool would that be.
I think if the students said they want to be the Furnace Fanatics, you're definitely talking to the wrong students.

Hburg -- You are absolutely correct in how the mighty have fallen at UH. They got the shaft on the realignment with the demise of the Southwest Conference and have never really recovered. Ann Richards was Governor of Texas at the time of the realignment and she insisted Baylor had to go along with UT, A&M and Texas Tech or she would cut some state funding to the big guns. So UH & TCU were left out in the cold.
UH basketball has one of the most storied histories outside of UNC & UCLA. Guy V. Lewis took four teams to the Final Four and coached a who's who of players:
Hakeem Olajuwon Clyde Drexler Elvin Hayes Otis Birdsong and countless others in NBA
Tom Penders actually is turning the program back around. He almost convinced Elijah Miller to stay before Elijah made the move to Lynchburg.
Prototype -- Take all the advice on this board with an understanding that many people come different backgrounds & perspectives. Us old hags obviously have divergent viewpoints from current students. But keep in mind you are marketing not only to students, but also the old hogs living in town and across the nation.

As a student, I do not want to be called a Furnace Fanatic nor do I know anyone who does...LU Lunatics or Flames Fanatics works somewhat, but Furnance Fanatics most definitely won't.

Its different strokes for different folks, aLUmnus. Some folks need organized direction in order to get involved. While some of just have a passion or sports. If having Whatever Fanatics gets some kids excited about showing up, then more power to them. I'm all for anything that will attract the casual fans to events.
By the way, I have always felt spirit/service groups would take off at LU if they were ever allowed/encouraged by the administration. But I know in my day, they weren't heavily discouraged because they wanted to conrol everything.

OK, do we really want to be on par with the likes of The Cameran Crazies or the Radford Rowdies? I don't think that we do.

I saw a kid with Flames Fanatics on his shirt in LaHaye center last night. I guess someone calls them that. The shirt didn't have the new logo or anything though.
